Fishing Report by Rich Ward

Report on-board Shy-Torque III
It’s always nice to get to sea and not have to race around everywhere looking for the “Big one” in the competitions.
Yesterday’s trip was very relaxing for us and we had a great day playing around on the relatively inshore marks.
A drop on a small piece of wreckage just 5 miles off to start the day where the lads took a couple of Codling and a couple of Haddock.
Then a drop on the nearby ground which proved rubbish!
We moved another couple of miles further off to a wreck at the North end of the 7 mile where the lads took another half a dozen Codling.
They weren’t suicidal but they were biting which was good.
Mostly coming up on the baited rigs.
As that wreck dried up we moved again.
This time we ran back out to the area where we’d found a good picking the day before but before that we dropped on another small wreck.
Good move Wardy!
It kept us going for a good 2-3 hours and the lads plucked around 40 fish from it.
Nothing big but some nice steady action.
When we had milked that one we finished off on the previous days ground and the fish were committing themselves fully.
On one drift we took over 15 fish, but unfortunately we had landed in the kindergarden and only kept 2 or 3!!
That continued for the rest of the day.
Up and down the drift another half a dozen drifts and the day was done and with the devils SE breeze picking up it was time to head off home.
Unlike the day previous where I had been knocking the fish out on the shads and sidewinders, I couldn’t click a fish and the majority came up on the squid baited rigs.
Andy Chesham who hadn’t been to sea since he was a young lad out fishing everyone!
Fergus explained that you must pay out your line to maintain contact with the bottom and don’t “jig” baited rigs!
He ended up with 15 or so himself.
A better tally on the count with a good 80+ fish to keep.
A cracking day at sea again with good company. Young Fergus offering his services and filleting away all the way back to harbour.
We have a few spaces left this Thursday if anyone fancies joining us.
Cheers
Rich.

Report on-board Galloper
The Easter break has seen us joined by plenty of young guns aboard Galloper. The weather even played ball at times. There's been loads of fish to be caught with dogfish queueing for our baits but thankfully plenty of smooth-hounds and even one or two rays and bass in between.
I always enjoy seeing the youngsters getting involved and it's great to see families sharing the angling experience together as I am fortunate enough to do with mine.
I'm sure there will be plenty more trips like this in the months to come.

on Mistress (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

Report on-board Mistress
It was the last day of the festival yesterday, I had a plan.......
It's been hard to nail down a settled spell with weather to run to a group of wrecks a little over 30 miles away, but we got it yesterday. I've not managed to get out that way since last September so expectations were running high!
Did we catch fish? Oh yes we caught fish, some nice ones too! but not quite big enough to win the spring festival!
We visited 4 wrecks 2 fished better than others, we manged every rod in on one drift some manged 2 drops that drift too.
There didn't seem to be any favourite methods, shads and bait traces took equal amounts of fish.
Everywhere we went we were just picking steady away 1-3 fish a drift, once the ebb came through the fishing unfortunately died on us. There were some spectacular marks on the sounder which always makes me question if there was enough tide or drift to get the fish really fired up. Our lines were perfectly vertical on both side of the boat all day.
With a good run home required we set off back to whitby at 1420 and hit the pier ends at 1645.
Thanks again to all the anglers taking part in the spring festival, thanks to all our sponsors, Simon Page at Billy Wilson, Jill Blackburn and sandy at the Middle Earth Tavern and also The station.
Well done to Toby for catching winner with Andy on Sea Urchin.
Our next big summer competition runs 28/6/25 - 20/7/25
If you're interested in a trip with me please give me a call on 07977 436903, if you can't get hold of me please give me a text message or WhatsApp and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Fishing Report by Rich Ward
on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)
21 Apr 2025 by Rich Ward
Report on-board Shy-Torque III
Yesterday was the last day of this years Spring Festival here at Whitby and as it was almost 2 weeks ago since we sailed, we were very happy to be getting out.
The leading fish up to yesterday was one of just over 8 lbs, so we were hopeful that with the tides being perfect for wrecking and the winds being light, there was half a chance of finding that winning fish.
We ran offshore to one of our favourite wrecks just over 17 miles off where we’d fished ok a couple of weeks back.
The fish were interested and the first 4 or 5 drifts produced over 20 fish, with the best going around 9.5lbs.
Not a big one but big enough to take the lead (if nobody else came in with a better one)
We kept our fingers crossed!
The day panned out really nice, with the lads taking fish everywhere we stopped after that, including the grounds a bit more local to the harbour.
A few of them taking “double ups” on the baited rigs too.
Things are maybe starting to show signs of improving a bit closer in at last.
I tried a couple of shads on the ground too which caught fish. The water clearing out nicely now.
At the weigh in we popped our fish on the scales which registered 9lb 5.5oz which took the lead (for 10 minutes!)
At the last knock, another Ling came to the scales at 11lb which pipped us!
Ah well, not to worry. Shaun from Cumbria was well pleased with his day and his 12 fish caught. His Ling taking 2nd place overall. Well done to him.
Aside the weather being pants for most of the competition, it ended with a bit of a flurry yesterday and all the contenders had a great day.
Our tally for the day would be over 70 to keep along with the other chuck backs.
Thanks to everyone who booked with us in the competition and we will see you in the Summer one.
Cheers
Rich.

Fishing Report by Andy Savage
on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)
20 Apr 2025 by Andy Savage
Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl
It’s been a while…..what with a family holiday and pants weather etc; but the wind finally eased back a bit and we got the chance to have a run out today.
As it was a tiny 4.4m neap tide, wrecking was the order of the day. With it being a Sunday and seven other Charter boats in action, finding offshore wrecks in range wasn’t easy. Once I knew where everyone else was headed, I opted to push tide and head North to some wrecks at 20-25 miles. I’m not keen on running out that far, but it was definitely going to be the best option to find a few fish in the clearer water.
We arrived at the first wreck around 0930hrs and I noted that it was marking a lot of feed around it. Hopefully the predators would be in amongst them. Thankfully after a long steam we got amongst some fish for a good few drifts. All Codling, with eight fish being the best drift and a nice stamp with mainly 3-5lb fish. After a hour, things had really slowed down, so I opted to push on another five miles.
Arriving at a small wreck just before slack water, the drift was very slow and it appeared the Pouting were feeding but the Cod weren’t. Almost bang on slack Toby Plotzitzka hooked a fish that put a little bend in his 80lb Class Rod! To be fair I hadn’t a clue that it was a bit better sized fish, but in fairly short order he wrestled up a nice Ling of 11lb 2oz! Once the tide Ebb tide got away, the Codling came back on the feed and we fished away steadily for another hour or so, taking fish every drift. As expected, muppet bait traces dominated, baited with Squid or Mackerel (Frozen). No surprise the Ling came to Mackerel….
A lovely group of lads who fished well and everyone got a few fish. At this time of year, I’d class that as a decent enough day…..shame the steam took so long. A massive thanks to everyone for coming, you were great company. Big thanks to my son Will, who was on crewing duties.
Also, massive congratulations to Toby who’s Ling also took first prize and £1000 in the WCSA Spring Competition.View Boats Page
