Today was a complete contrast on yesterdays fishing on the Shy-Torque. After the struggle we endured yesterday working on the inshore marks we decided that a trip to the "wall" was definately in order.

We couldn't have wished for better conditions for the cruise out there. A beautiful calm morning with a cracking sun rise thrown in.

We were greeted by a pair of Minke whales on arrival which was superb for the lads to see!!

The 1st ridge of ground we stopped on was to be the provider of a tremendous amount of fish for the lads. We never had to move from it all day which was a bonus. Everyone on board had 15 cod plus and some of the lads had half a dozen ling to add to them.

Dermot Faye from Bedale had a nice little wolf fish of 4lb for the pot. Nice eating too!

The average size of the cod today were around the 5-6lb mark with a good few fish to the 10lb mark too. A few of the ling managed to nudge the scales to 9lb. Not the monsters of late on the boat but still nice to see.

A very enjoyable day for all today including myself !!

Pictured is Craig Small from Barnsley with a couple of his better fish of the day.

The herring are spawning here at Whitby at the moment making for a very poor day quantity wise yesterday.

Both the cod and ling were very hard to come across indeed. However at the close of play Jim Arthur from Blackburn came across this beauty of 20lb 2oz. A nice way to finish the day after a struggle in the morning.

Jim is a past September festival winner on the Shy-Torque.

    Nice one mate!!

Yesterday was a very nice day indeed for Brian Towle from Hull as we held our presentation for the winner of the 2012 September fishing festival here at Whitby.

Brian was fishing aboard the Shy-Torque on the penultimate day of the competition and landed a cracking ling of 23lb 11.5oz to take the 1st prize of £1000.00 in cash plus £50.00 cash for the heavieast fish of the day.

John Wilcock from Bradford was previously holding the lead for a week with another good ling of 21lb 5.5oz also on the Shy-Torque which he hoped had done it! Unlucky John!

Brian came through to Whitby with his family to collect the money to which his wife said "I'm going to enjoy helping him to spend it!"

Congratulations mate and look forward to seeing you all on your trips next year.

Pictured from right to left are skipper Rich Ward, Brian Towle (winner!) Frankie Laws ( representing sponsors "Mr Chips" fish and chip shop ) and Paul Kilpatrick from the WCSA.

A big thank you goes to Adrian at Mr Chips for the sponsorship each year and also to Barry at the Endeavour pub ( presentation venue and the best pint in town!! ) who also sponsors the events. Without the local support of businesses like these we wouldn't be able to hold the biggest competitions in the country. Thanks again!!!

    Tight lines as ever

The September angling festival finished on Sunday here at Whitby and what a cracking time the Shy-Torque boys had on the closing days!!

Ben Laws from Whitby taking a 1st daily prize in the last week with a lovely ling of 18lb 12oz .

Then John Wilcock ( winner of more competitions here at Whitby than anyone) took over 1st place on the leader board on the 3rd to last day with a cracking ling of 21lb 5.5oz which, to be honest, we thought was going to be good enough to win the event. We were wrong!

On the penultimate day of the competition Brian Towle from Hull hauled up a belting ling of 23lb 11.5oz from a wreck only 9 miles from shore which took overall 1st place in the event winning him a very nice £1000.00 first prize plus his £50.00 first daily prize. Not a bad days work!!

Yet another competition win for the Shy-Torque!!!

We would like to thank all the anglers who fished aboard the Shy-Torque during this years competitions and hope to see you all again next year hopefully for some more winners!!!!!

A fantastic days fishing for the lads aboard the boat on the penultimate day of this years September angling festival here at Whitby.

Plenty of fish for the lads on the 9 mile ground with cod to 10lb, pollock to just short of 13lb and also the festival winner of just short of 24lbs!!! ( Report to follow )

Konrad Kiernozycki from Halifax brought this lovely pollock of 12lb 10oz aboard. He was using a blue 4" sidewinder on the wreck. He lost the lure the next drop!!

Some cracking pollock around at the moment here at Whitby.

The cod fishing has started to improve on the inshore marks again here at Whitby with the ground marks offering the lads some lovely fresh run fish.

At this time of the year the cod are very often finding food off the bottom so finding a good "feed" mark is often essential for success. Cod well into double figures can often be found feeding well off the bottom (sometimes 50-60ft !)

Paul Williams from Barnsley is pictured with a lovely cod of 9lbs which he caught some 40 turns off the bottom, whilst we worked a feed mark, on a "rhubarb and custard" 4" shad.

    Nice one mate!!

Yesterday saw John Wilcock ( my Sunday crewman ) return to the boat after a small bout of ill health. Great to see him fully recovered.

Not the best of tides to return to now that they are approaching the big springs again, but John is always up for the challenge!

We worked a couple of wrecks out on the 7 mile stream to start, with just a few fish to count. Nothing of any size either with cod to 6lb and ling to around the 10lb mark. As the tide steadily pushed through the fishing fell even quieter so we decided to push off a little further to the 9 mile ground. Again, nothing startling, with a few codling to 7lb and a few more ling to 8lb.

The breeze started to freshen up after lunch and we ran back towards a wreck which isn't very well known to others. Trouble was we were racing along at over 2 knots by this time! John had just a couple of the fresh mackerel left which he had caught on the 9 mile.

"Last ditch" he said to me. In typical John Wilcock style ( and over 55 years experience in sea angling )he persevered to the bitter end and was finally rewarded with what is now leading this Septembers competition.

    A cracking ling of 21lb 5.5oz.

John will return to fish with us next Friday to fish the last couple of days.

Well done mate and good luck!!!

A phenomenal days fishing aboard the boat today with a mixed group of anglers from around the Yorkshire region.

The forecast was always against us so we decided to stay fairly local for the first hour or so but as the breeze eased to almost a draft we decided to open the throttles and run to some offshore wrecks.

The first one at 17 miles produced very little with a handful of cod to 7lbs and similar with the ling.

Onwards and outwards was the order and after another 45 minute steam we dropped on the first of two wrecks some 27 miles from shore, South East of " Baymans Hole" which are seldom fished.

RESULT!! Cod to over 12lbs ( plenty of em' ) Ling to over 16lbs and Pollack to just short of 12lbs ( plenty of em' )

A cracking day with a cracking team!!

Pictured is Paul Siddle from Patrington Nr Hull with his best two fish of the day, the ling being just over 16lbs and winning a daily prize in this years Autumn angling comp. Paul amassing over 130lbs of fish on the day!!

For a chance of a day like this from Whitby give me a ring before 8pm to arrange a trip on 07733 233352.

Some brilliant wreck fishing over the last set of small tides this last week.

Pollack to 10lbs and Ling to just short of 19lbs.

Yesterday saw Ben Laws of Whitby take the first daily prize in this years late summer angling competition here at Whitby. Had the fish not decided to throw it's stomach up on surfacing it would definately be leading the comp!!

Bens fish won him the £50.00 first prize plus the boat sweep of £200.00 !!! Nice days work mate !!

Still some free places left next week lads so why not come and have a try for the £1000.00 first prize yourself!

Pictured is Ben Laws with his ling of 18lb 11.5oz which is currently the 2nd heaviest fish weighed in.
