Another fairly successful day on the Uptiding grounds yesterday.

We started on one of of our more popular marks just a couple of miles North of the harbour and stayed there for the whole day.

A slow but steady picking for the lads who worked hard at it.

Young Fergus (crew) and myself boating around 15 Codling which we handed to the lads.

Sorin travelled up from London to join us for the day and went home with a nice few Codling, a Haddock and a (very rare for the Uptiding) Bass!

Around 20 undersized fish being returned
    to the water safely.

A lovely relaxing day at sea with the usual banter.

    Cheers for now,
    Rich.

We had a run out yesterday with just a small team on board.
Regular angler Si England joined us, along with Waldek and his mates Lucasz and Bruce.

The tides are heading toward the Springs again so we were back on the Uptiding marks and after a short 15 minute steam we were anchored and ready to go.

Not a quick start, but as the tide speed increased so did the fishing. We were into the Codling and the first stop provided a steadyish picking for the first couple of hours resulting in around 30 fish being boated.

Nothing of any size, with a good number of undersized returned safely and the keepers only running to just over 4 pounds tops.

As slack water came on we decided a short move was in order so we moved up the coast a couple of miles. One Codling in 30 minutes! Not the best move ever!

Using the flood, we dropped back to the first mark and the lads started picking away again.

The count for keepers for the day was around 35 total with as many “chuck backs”

Not many bigger fish running at present but still some good fun fishing with the lighter gear.

    Cheers for now,
    Rich

We’ve spent a couple of days at sea Uptiding this week.

We sailed Monday with just the two lads on board.

Father and son Charlie and Jason from Manchester tried their hand at the inshore anchor work and really enjoyed the day with us.

The tides haven’t really been ideal for Uptiding the last few days running at around the 4.4m range which doesn’t really push enough tide through for the job but we still managed to bag a few fish for the lads.
30 fish or so boated with just 15 of those to keep with the rest going back safely.

Tuesday we ran a different direction to try find a better fishing but sadly to no avail.
Just a handful of fish up until noon.
A short move back up the coast a couple of miles proved a bit more successful with another dozen or so fish boated.

Slim pickings overall for the two days but great banter as ever and reasonable weather too.

Hopefully some improvements from this weekend as the tides start running stronger again.

    Cheers for now,
    Rich

We ran our second Uptiding trip of the year yesterday.

Our mixed team of 7 lads enjoyed some steady (at times) fishing.

No great shakes numbers wise with around 30 fish again. No big fish to count either. The best being one I caught at a shade under 5lbs.

I fancied that the day would have produced a little better than the last trip as the tides are running nice and strong in the high 5.0 meter range. Yesterday’s being a 5.7m.

We are wondering whether storm “Babet” might still be playing a part and even the inshore marks need a bit longer to settle.
Anyway, still another very enjoyable day out on the water.

The usual squid and black lugworm working, but the cart helping a lot yesterday too.
    Cheers for now,
    Rich

25 Oct 2023 by Rich Ward

After Monday’s offshore trip to wrecks out on the 20 mile stream and further off out to the “Wall” we chose to work the Uptiding marks yesterday.

Basically (and sadly) storm Babet has smashed our offshore marks to bits leaving the water like soup and the fishing was rubbish out there!!!

A marked improvement however yesterday with around 30 Codling boated (around 18 keepers) and the rest of the undersized safely returned.
I reckon if the tide had been running stronger than 4.6m we would have had much greater numbers.

The gentle Easterly swell not helping us with the fishing either with the boat laying slightly off square and after lunch the four lads decided to go for the 2.30pm bridge after a couple of them started feeling a little queasy.

All in all though a really nice start to our Uptiding season and we’re really looking forward to seeing you all over the next few months.

Things are looking very healthy indeed.

    Cheers for now,
    Rich

Sorry I haven’t posted much in the last week or so.

Prior to the last trip out last Monday, the previous couple of trips out have been a bit slow with a relatively poor catch rate.

Last Monday was our last run off before our lass and me came away for a short break.

The day fished slowly to start with but after a move to a little wreck 12 miles North, we managed a nice few fish to save the day.
Nothing flash to report size wise but enough fish boated to keep young Fergus busy filleting for the lads all the way home!

A gorgeous day weather wise too with some lovely warm October sunshine.

Cheers and see you all after we get back.

24 Sep 2023 by Rich Ward

The September angling competition came to an end yesterday (should have been today but strong winds stopping us)

The last two or three trips haven’t given us much to report about really with just a picking here and there.

Best day for us was Friday gone, where we picked around 25 fish (all Ling) from a wreck 18 miles East of the harbour.
No big fish landed but with Ling to just under 12lbs on the boat, the lads enjoyed a reasonable few hours angling in nice settled waters.

Yesterday we steamed South East to some wrecks around 16-17 miles for a bare picking of fish.
Our most regular angler Paul Mawson landed a lovely Cod which topped out at 13lb exactly. Well done to him.
His fish now taking the lead in the Shy-Torque III fish of the month where the winner gets a free trip with us (valid for 12 months)
We end the fish of the month competition in October but will start again in April next year.

Last months F.O.M (winners) were Paul Mawson and Bill Barraclough who both landed Ling a smidge under 14lbs. Identical in weight to the ounce, on the same day! We don’t see that very often and we all said we’d probably never see it again. How wrong we were!

The September competition winners are sharing the £1000.00 first prize too!
Both anglers landing Ling of 19lb 1/2oz.
Well done to both of them!

Thanks to everyone who made the competition a success even though we did lose several days to bad weather.
    I’m sure everyone enjoyed it.

Also, thanks to Alex at “Mr Chips” fish and chip shop and the Middle Earth Tavern on Church Street for their continued support in sponsoring the events.
Without support like theirs we wouldn’t be able to host these cracking competitions.

On another note, our association is holding an Uptiding competition this year which runs from Saturday 25th November - Sunday 3rd December.

We are giving away a £1000.00 heaviest overall fish plus daily prizes for the heaviest fish of the day.

If you fancy a go at that, give me a ring to sort a day for you.
Individuals are very welcome and we will sail with just 3 anglers on any day.
A nice little prize to have a go at just before Xmas!!

Cheers for now guys and keep the lines tight!

14 Sep 2023 by Rich Ward

Sorry I haven’t done a report over the last three days.
That’s mainly due to the fact that there’s been nothing much to report on really.

We had Ken Fusco and family on board Monday/Tuesday.
Ken, Andy, Declan and Dave book the boat to themselves every year with us in the competitions.

Monday we steamed off North to three or four wrecks North of Whitby out to 29 miles. Rubbish! 10 fish for the day!
Declan did however win the daily prize of £50.00 with a Ling of 9lb 4oz.

Tuesday was such that we had to stay more inshore and work marks closer to home as the breeze was to increase from the North throughout the day.
Rubbish fishing again with just 8 fish to keep!
Declan did get the daily £50.00 prize winner again though, with a whopping 5lb 2oz Ling!

Thanks to Ken and the lads for their patience, understanding and support.
They know the score and that it can’t always be a top drawer day.

Yesterday’s team were a group of my most regular anglers who had decided to book the boat for a long trip.
We weren’t in the competition as we sailed at 5.0am and returned late.

We steamed offshore to some ground marks to start the day. Rubbish again with 15 fish or so boated.
Out to the first wreck of the day it was then.
    1 fish! OMG!
The second wreck did produce slightly more fish with 8 boated but still rubbish!!
The third stop was on a tiny bit of scrap 38 miles off.
We were hoping and praying this would come up trumps but it didn’t! Rubbish!!
Just a dozen fish from it.
My crewman Fergus did however pull a nice Ling from it though. Weighing in at 19lb 6oz, a P.B for him. Well done to him!

Shame we weren’t in the competition as that fish would have jumped in to the lead on the board.
    Ah well that’s life! LOL!

Thanks to everyone who have fished with us so far in the competition and we’ll see you all again soon.

    Cheers and tight lines.
    Rich.

10 Sep 2023 by Rich Ward

Yesterday was the second day of this year’s September angling competition.

As is fairly often on the Shy-Torque, the team was made with a mixed group of lads.

Ability wise, all the lads were well seasoned so we chose the offshore wrecking option for the day.

Distances yesterday were such that we would only have time to try two, possibly three wrecks over the course of the trip.
First stop was a fairly big lump of scrap and it threw around 25 fish out which wasn’t a bad start.

A couple of better looking fish were hooked, but as is so often the case, slipped the hooks!
    Nevertheless some nice fish taken.

We tried the next wreck which is a short hop of two miles and it fished relatively slowly with only ten fish or so boated.
Unusual for that wreck as it normally produces the best out of the two.

We slipped back to the first one and took a further fifteen fish from it to end the day.

No big fish boated as such but the sweep on the boat organised by my mate Andy Davies was taken by our most regular angler Paul Mawson from Bridlington with a Ling at 10lb 8oz.
    Well done to him.

All in all, a nice day on the fish and good to see more Codling than Ling!

Two other skippers and myself are organising an “Uptiding” competition which runs from 26.11.23 to 03.12.23.

If you fancy a run out for a go, give me a bell, email, or drop me a text.

    Cheers
    Rich.

9 Sep 2023 by Rich Ward

We had a mixed bunch of regular lads plus two newbie’s on board the boat yesterday.

We were welcomed by thick fog as soon as we cleared the piers and unfortunately it didn’t lift for us all day. A shame because a bit of sun on another flat calm sea would’ve been nice.

Anyway, unlike Fridays fishing, yesterday’s was a marked improvement with one of our stops providing most of our catch for the day.
A small wreck some 9 miles North of the harbour.

Codling, Ling and a few small Haddock boated.

Bryan Stanton taking the best of the day, a nice Ling of 11lb 3.5oz.
His fish is now leading the Shy-Torque “Fish of the month” which can get the winner a free trip if they have the heaviest fish at the end of the month.
Good luck to him, although with the September competition starting today, we really are hoping for something a bit heavier to stand any chance of winning it!!
    Let’s see what happens.

Tally for yesterdays trip, around 50 fish to keep.
    Tight lines everyone,
    Rich
