A group of lads from Newcastle asked me some time ago if it would be possible to try and target the Halibut here off Whitby. This week we managed to get the group away to have a go. We sailed at 6 a.m as the grounds where we would hope to get these fish are some 30 miles from shore. On arrival the tide was ripping past too quick so we had to play the waiting game for an hour or so. An hour before slack water and we saw some action. One of the lads had a take which certainly appeared to be a large Halibut judging by the way his 50lb class rod was bending. Sadly after 5 minutes or so the fish was lost. Some 15 minutes after this I hooked into one myself and after a 35 minute battle with 3 very powerful dives back to the bottom I boated a 47lb fish. I was using a Shimano Speed Master 30lb class rod with a TLD15 multiplyer which made this a very exciting ordeal indeed!! All the lads were very pleased to see one of these fish boated and have already booked 3 Halibut trips for next year! If you fancy a try for one yourselves please drop me a line. Some fantastic weather this last couple of weeks here at Whitby. The fishing has been very good indeed with some nice catches of cod and ling being landed on the Shy Torque III ( see catches section ) .
The big ling have started to poke their noses out again!! This last week seeing two over 22lb on the boat. Both fish being caught on the rough ground.
This stamp of fish is easily big enough to win any competition held here at Whitby !! The next one being the September competition which starts on the 10th Sept and finishes on the 25th Sept. Big cash prizes again in this comp lads so give me a ring if your interested in grabbing a "grand" before the end of the year !!
Hope your all having a great years angling wherever you are.
Pictured is Konrad Kiernozcki on his maiden trip on the boat with a 22lb 8oz Ling.

This years Summer angling festival at Whitby proved to be a bit of a nervous one for John Wilcock from Bradford. On the first day of the event John managed to set the precedent with a very fine ling of 26lb 8oz aboard the Shy-Torque III. The next 22 days were to prove very lengthy indeed!! However, his fish did manage to hold out to the end and John will now receive a massive £5000.00 in cash for his long wait !!! The WCSA would like to thank all the anglers who took part in this years event and also to all our sponsors who very generously donate to the association each year, without whom we wouldn't be able to host such a prestigious event. Pictured is John with his winning fish. Well done mate!!

The Summer 2011 angling competition started today at Whitby and what a start John Wilcock had aboard the Shy-Torque III. John is a past winner of this prestigeous event and knows how to set the standard!!! Last drop of the day today on slack water rewarded John with a lovely cod of 14lb and a very fine ling of 26lb 8 oz. The festival has another 22 days to run and John will now be praying his fish holds out till the end for the £5000.00!!! Keep everything crossed !! Well done mate.

Cracking weather again this day for a great team of lads from the Leeds area. The fishing was pretty quiet on the morning so we pushed off to some wrecks 20 miles off and found good fishing for 3 or 4 hours. Best fish of the day was a lovely cod of 16lb 5oz. Had he caught this one a couple of weeks ago he would have won £1000.00 in the Spring Competition!! Unlucky !! Pictured is Will Thompson from Menston nr Leeds with his fish of 16lb 5oz., this being the heaviest cod caught this year from Whitby on a 10 hour trip.
