Fishing Report by Shams Uddin
12 Jul 2016 by Shams Uddin
First trip out on Mistress this year. We were quite lucky with the weather as forecast wasn't that good. We sailed an hour later than usual giving a chance for the wind to die down and the waters to calm a little. Suits me just fine as I have a long drive to get to Whitby. Anyway, once we were out, all caught a few mackerel for bait then onto some wrecking. Fishing wasn't hectic but a few good sized cod and ling were taken, ranging from 6 to 10 pounders. As always Richard works hard to keep us on the fish and helps everyone with bringing fish in and with the tangles some get into. Overall a good days fishing with enough caught to keep everyone happy. In my opinion Richard a faultless skipper. Looking forward to my next trip, hopefully asap. See ya soon Rich.

Its been a while since my last report, in between we've managed to lose another week to bad weather, the algae has cleared now and the water is clearing daily.
The Mackerel have arrived in numbers, a little offshore now and the Ling have started moving and feeding now too. The fishing was tricky over the bigger tides but as they've eased the fishing has come on well.
Most trips this week we've seen Ling to just under double figures and Cod to 7/8lb. Today though with the tides easing we've seen our best Cod this year bouncing the boat scales between 13lb & 14lb 8oz, the same drift also saw Ling to just under 11lb, we had other Cod to 8/9lb and Ling to similar size too, the best angler taking 15 fish.
With the tides dropping further this week and a settled spell we will making the most of it! we only have a few spare spaces this week,
3 places - Tuesday 14th
3 places - Sunday 19th

Mistress Weekly Round Up
Its been around a week since our last report, in one way its good that we’ve been getting to sea a bit more regularly, in another way its been quite hard work, working around the May algae bloom. With the algae being patchy its meant that no two days are the same, and as the tides have lifted its made fishing quite difficult, never the less we’ve put to sea and got our anglers a few fish to take home. As the tides drop this week the fishing should become more productive.
Early on in the week we experienced some cracking weather and managed to get out and do a bit of Wrecking for a few hours before the wind came on fresh in the afternoon.
The lads who had all fished before but not really done any wrecking managed to rake up a good few fish each for the morning, we managed a few up to 6lb in weight but most in the 2lb - 4lb region.
As the wind freshened on we ran inshore and dropped the anchor to finish the day raking a few more codlings together.
After the previous trip we were tied up a day, then back the day after, the tides had lifted and with only a couple of lads booked on, we stayed inshore Uptiding.
We admittedly had a slow start to the day, moving around raking a few fish here and there. Our 2nd move produced a real nice fresh run cod just over 6lb for one the lads, so it lifted everyones spirits a bit.
Another move saw us boat a few more fish to 4lb just before we lost the tide run, and I upped anchor for a move to one of my more consistent ledges.
The move was a good call, we started getting bites as soon as we’d shut off the engine, we experienced a steady couple of hours with everyone on board getting a few fish and bites.
My good mate Alex came along to help out and wet a line, and also bought his son Kai for a run off.
Kai got one around 4lb and was absolutely proud as punch!
I was fishing too, and despite a bit of a lean time for myself the last couple of trips I was actually managing to bag a few fish!
Ive been trying to run my baits stocks down a bit for next winter so I was using a lot of crab based baits, Ive still got a lot of Black lug worm too, The cart fished well, getting me quite a few bites, the Worm, Mussel and squid also fished well for everyone else on board.
The bites dried up a bit, so we upped anchor for our final move of the day.
It was a good move, no sooner had we settled in got our baits cast in, Kai’s rod started twitching with slow long pulls on his tip. . . . . You guessed it, best fish of the day! It was only ounces short of his PB, he was really buzzing!
Then on his next cast, still absolutely buzzing from his 7lber, the jammy little git only went and clicked a 5lber too!
The lads on board, including his dad were all proud as punch to see the young lad get a few nice fish, as it was Kai finished up with 6 nice cod to take home, and fished the best on the boat . . . . . again!
The tides in the following days took a pretty big jump, and the fishing tailed off a bit for the lads, we still manged fish for the boys though and always put 110% effort in finding our anglers a few fish.

We have actually managed a day at sea this week, The water has been well and truly churned up with the last northerly, so I gave it a last attempt at the Uptiding figuring the last blow over the spring tides would have coloured the water up well offshore making the wrecking very hard work indeed.
The day started out very cold, with last nights frost still very visible on the boat windows. It didnt take long though for the sun to burn through it and turn the day warm for us, there was virtually no wind all day too making it a very pleasant day at sea.
I knew it might be hard work for the boys, but I knew we’d more than likely muster up a few fish for the lads.
As it turned out we managed fish at most of the marks we fished, we were just picking away at concentrated pockets of fish. Picking a few up then moving and picking, and we moved a good few times throughout the day finishing on the rock top.
Most of the fish were around 2lb but we had a few fish around the 4lb stamp and the best tipped the scales at a healthy 7lb.

Finally the weather gods have cut us a bit of slack here at whitby . It was nice to get to sea after a good week or so tied up.
The tides have been enormous this last few days so with only a few anglers booked on we opted to give the uptiding grounds another crack.
Our first spot gave up a few codlings as we finished the flood and went into slack water, the bites dried up completely so I had a run off a few miles to see if we could tempt a few fish to bait or shads but a combination of coloured water and the big tide meant we just lost gear! Nothing ventured and all that!
So we steamed back inside and got the anchor back back down, the fishing really was slow on the ebb tide, despite moving all over trying different spots and different baits we just werent hitting them, a few undersized codlings, pouts, whitings and a doggy were all we could muster. In all honesty I thought about calling a short day, but the tide at this point was about to turn so i sat it out a bit longer.
As soon as the flood bent though the rods started bouncing, so with a couple of hours of the day left we sat it out, moving to a ground edge I like we took a steady picking until home time, everyone got a few cod to take home finishing up with around 20 codlings and the usual bleggs and a doggy, nothing huge but a good few pushing 4lb, and a bonus Lobster for myself, a couple of the lads caught undersized Lobsters too that were returned.
This next week the tides fall away and the water is clearing all the time so we will be looking to hit the wrecks again, we have bookings for wednesday and friday and the minute with spaces available, we will sail with a minimum of 3 anglers if you fancy any of the other days,

With a very small window in the weather today here at Whitby, we managed to get a team of 5 anglers together with a view to hitting the inshore wrecks.
As forecast it was a shabby start this morning, with the cruise out to the wrecks steady. We tried a few different marks to break the journey up on the way out to one of my favourite early season wrecks.
We arrived at around 10am and started hitting the fish steady away 3 to 4 a drift, although we tried shads but they were preferring the squid baits offered on paternoster rigs.
The fishing remained steady until the turn of the tide and went off a bit then. But not before we’d taken a good number of fish for our anglers.
We took mainly Cod but a good few Lings came aboard too, the biggest of both falling to Mistress regular Martin Hoole, his biggest Cod would of been in the 5-6lb region and Ling around 8lb.
We Finished up with around 60 fish for the day, the two best anglers boating 16-18 fish apiece. Personally I fished Like a lettuce and boated 7, 3 of which were milting as I pulled them from the sea so returned them immediately, The other lads also returned a good number of fish to fight another day.
Prospects for the up and coming season are certainly looking good, as the water clears further and the fish turn more to feeding rather than spawning we should see an increase in both numbers and size of fish.
The lures will come into their own too as the water clears, people using 4” & 6” sidewinder sandeels usually do well, I find early season White and also green fish very well.
Sometimes a pirk can outfish the shads if the clarity isnt quite right and will often find out the better fish.
Martin at Whitby Angling Supplies stocks an extensive range of top quality tackle and lures along with all other terminal gear and baits at very competitive prices, so will be able to sort you out for a great days sea fishing aboard Mistress
So, if you fancy a crack at the Wrecking, We still have some good tides available through out the year along with some some decent tides in our WCSA angling festivals.

The weather gods were semi kind to us this weekend here at Whitby. We managed to fish both Saturday and Sunday, the wind direction and strength made the boat wonder a bit at anchor, but with perseverance we found the Mistress anglers a few fish!!!
Saturday was hard work despite moving around lots of ledges, gulleys and ridges, we finished up with 25 cod for the day plus a couple of Ling, Coalie, Poutings and Whitings,
Sunday I worked a different area, when we first arrived the wind was very fresh making bite detection hard, so I got the lads to let off plenty of line and hold the rods the same as we do when fishing from the shore, Bingo! the fish were at us within minutes and we started taking a steady picking of fish,
Slack water was slow, as always, we managed maybe 4 or 5 cod, then I moved to a ledge that has served me well for the start of the flood, I was a bout to give up when we'd not had a bite, then suddenly all the rods started going, we were getting 2 or 3 rods in at a time, and had a good afternoon,
Again nothing massive to report, the biggest went maybe 6lb most in the 2lb-4lb bracket, and a few chuck backs, the best angler took 14, the rest of the lads managing 8-9 fish apiece so we ended up with just over 50 cod for the day.
We are now taking bookings for the season, and the good tides are starting to fill up, we usually finish uptiding around march and then start back wrecking as water clarity allows.

The Uptiding here at Whitby this week on Mistress has seen some absolute belters boated, lots of fish in the 6-8lb range boated with a couple of lucky anglers boating double figure fish,
our best day saw 5 anglers boating the best part of 90 cod, awesome angling, the best bag went 64lb for local Mistress angler Alex Leadley. the same day also produced two further 50lb bags for anglers onboard.
Yesterday also saw another good Cod hit the decks, just a couple of ounces under 10lb!

First day back at it after a very relaxing family holiday, It was also the 1st day of our Mistress festive sweepstake here at Whitby
Conditions weren't the best to be honest but we got a morning in, in testing conditions with the wind being over the tide it took a while for the boat to lay properly at anchor,
The fishing was good though, Mistress regular, Gary Price has set a good bag weight in the sweepstake at 40lb 5oz with 15 fish, and we were back in just after lunch, Gary fished very well indeed!.
Rob Gillings got the heaviest fish in the sweep so far at 5lb 4oz, Im sure this will be smashed though as we had fish upto 7lb on the boat.
There's a lot of fish on the inshore grounds this year, so if you fancy a crack at our sweepstake give me a bell on 07977 436903, e-mail: seafishingwhitby@hotmail.co.uk or drop me a message on my Facebook page - Mistress Sea Angling Charters
