    Report on-board Galloper

Spaces this weekend aboard Galloper from brightlingsea Essex.
The tides are great for a flattie bash inshore Sunday and we are hoping to get offshore Saturday for hounds, spurs and rays ect.
The dabs won't be around in numbers much longer so this might be our last chance to get a feed of them before we start our spring fishing next month.
They might not strip line from the reels but they can be great fun in light tackle and taste great.

  • 14/02/2025 Fishing Report by Rich Cope on Mistress (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

14 Feb 2025 by Rich Cope

    Report on-board Mistress

With a small window in the weather we sailed this weekend (saturday).

Having spoken with another skipper, the day previous had been hard work so I chose to push tide and fish a bit further afield, in a bid to find my guys a few fish!

We worked a few marks through the morning taking a few fish here and there, yes it was a slow start, but we managed around a dozen keepers through the ebb tide with a few chuck backs and the usual pout and dogs.

I used the last of the tide to run a bit closer to home, and to set up In a different area I like on the flood.

It was a smart move as we had a pretty good afternoon finishing on a high note, we'd a few more chuck back codlings and a good few more keepers, finishing with around 25 keepers (40cm plus) for the day with the best fish only around 4lb.

The crack was brilliant all day with everyone and it was great to catch up with my regulars and meet a few new faces too.

I have availability calendar up to date for the year with plenty of spaces, if you fancy a trip with me please give me a on 07977 436903, if yiu can't get hold of me drop me a text or WhatsApp and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

    Tight lines Rich

    Report on-board Galloper

With the easterly wind curtailing our efforts to get offshore the other day we stayed inshore and went in search of some dabs.
After mark started us off with a couple of pouting our first dabs came aboard.
Tom managed to find a bass which was only just bigger than his hook! However it was nice to see something different.
The lads had fairly large hooks on to start with but we downsized them as the day progressed and caught more as a result.
There weren't many whiting about compared to before Christmas as is to be expected this time of year but we had a few small ones once the tide. We even managed a couple of dogfish too which Steve was very pleased with!!
There were a few nice eating size dabs among them and so we kept a few for the pot. Stanley was desperate to catch a couple of dabs for himself and Douglas for dinner. He had a few throughout the day and we kept a couple which he ate the next night and is already asking to catch some more.
I know dabs aren't everybody's cup of tea but we had a pleasant day with a few fish to boot. If you just want to get out fishing soon then please get in touch.
I have spaces inshore and offshore in the coming weeks.

  • 09/02/2025 Fishing Report by Trevor Small on Rocket (Poole, Dorset)

9 Feb 2025 by Trevor Small

    Report on-board Rocket

    Hi All
After a really productive January that saw fish wherever we went , fishing this weekend has been the toughest yet. A stiff North East wind both days didn't help us in any way. Even traveling lots of miles, and having most of anchor warp out to compensate for the sea conditions ,couldn't prevent the occasional and unavoidable drag. A big cat like Rocket dose take some stopping, when faced in a wind with tide scenario . Quite often its not the anchor its self that slips, but the ground we fish is not always strong enough to hold us. When we did manage a toe hold, the results were not what any skipper hopes for. The whiting seem mostly small ,the Congers are in biblical proportions and most other species have decided to go on a diet. Anyway ,I did what any skipper does. I tried hard ,and eventually it pays off. Yesterday Steve Collins aka Shouty Steve managed his personal best Silver Whiting whilst reefing. I'm taking a couple of weeks off ,and then might have another go to target Spurs on the weekend of Feb 22nd 23rd. Fingers crossed it doesn't blow hard ,so we can head out on the 40m contour and do the business. Tight lines Trev

  • 06/02/2025 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

6 Feb 2025 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

The last wrecking trip we ran was on the 27th December, so with perfect tide and weather conditions today, we had another go.

I’d explained to the lads that it’s a high risk strategy running off a long way in the winter, but they were happy to give it a try. We headed out at first light for a two hour steam North to the first wreck. The fishing conditions were perfect with all the lines being vertical and a lovely slow drift straight along the wreck. Unfortunately that meant nothing to the fish, as in half a dozen drifts we caught nothing but a strap Ling. It was at that point that we saw a pair of seals moving around us. Unsure if they had put the fish down, we pushed on to the next wreck.

We didn’t do much better on the second wreck. Each drift there were Pouting clattering the baits and a few hung themselves. We did catch a handful of small Codling, and I even took a picture of a 3lb fish that Paul Hargreaves caught, just in case we didn’t get anything else!! After 45 minutes or so, we pushed on to another wreck, which would have us arrive just as the tide was running into slack. It was only a small piece of scrap, so hopefully the lack of tide would allow us a bit more time to extract a fish or two.

Thankfully, after giving the “all in” four rods went over almost immediately and I breathed a sigh of relief! We spent the rest of the day drifting slowly across the wreck, taking 2,3 or 4 each time.
The biggest fish were a pair of Ling at 9lb 8oz to Chris and 8lb to Andy; plus a Codling just over 7lb to Joe Clough. Muppet traces with Squid and/or Mackerel seemed to work well. Although one of the lads put down a set of Daylights and took a triple shot of Pouting and a double shot of Codling.

The weather was fantastic all day and whilst we didn’t break any records, everyone got a few fish. When we set off, I feared the worse, but hoped for the best; and at the end of the day we were probably somewhere in between. It wasn’t too bad. The company and weather were fantastic, so thanks for a lovely day out lads.
