  • 03/11/2022 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

3 Nov 2022 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

With a break in the weather today, we had a fantastic group of lads, eager to get out fishing. With eight sets of hire tackle out, it was going to be a good opportunity to get some less experienced anglers catching fish, which is something I really enjoy.

Having not been out for a while, we had an optimistic look to see if there were any Mackerel left to catch for fresh bait. Surprisingly we pick up a fair few on the feathers. Lots of Joey’s but also a few strings of “regular sized” ones came up.

We started the day drifting the rough ground at three miles. This gave the lads who hadn’t fished before, chance to get into the routine of feeling for bites and controlling the gear. My regular bait traces mounted with Squid and/or Mackerel got us off to a great start, with a nice picking of Ling and Codling. Igors Fortuna initially took the biggest Ling at 10lb 12oz and Andy Thornton the biggest Codling at 6lb 12oz. We stuck with it for the next hour or so and everyone got themselves off the mark and built confidence.

Once the flood tide got away properly we had a quiet twenty minutes with the drift speed going up to 1.5 knots. I decided to push us out to the five mile ground so we could lose a bit of tide and slow down the drift. This worked well and the run of fish continued, with the lads taking up to eight fish a drift. Igors Fortuna took another double figure Ling and Andy Thornton took a 12lb 8oz Ling giving him the biggest Cod and Ling for the day (great angling Andy).

The average size of the Codling wasn’t massive on the ground, with more in the 2-4lb range than the 4-6lb Class. With everyone in the groove, we finished the day on a couple of wrecks where we found some better Codling. Paul Hargreaves was after a new PB and he landed it on his last cast of the day….fantastic!!

A massive thanks to everyone for coming along. You all fished and caught really well….hope to see you again soon

  • 31/10/2022 Fishing Report by Scott Belbin on Galloper (Brightlingsea, Essex)

31 Oct 2022 by Scott Belbin

    Report on-board Galloper

The bigger tides made for busy fishing on our last run of general trips. The dogfish and whiting are still making a fair dent in my supplies of frozen squid as well as keeping the lads occupied. In between we are still catching a few thorn-back rays and even some late smooth-hounds and bass are showing inshore.
The codling are making their best showing here for several years. as I mentioned before they wont be filling your freezer up but they are great to see and put a smile on the lads faces. They are still hit and miss but we did manage 6 little codling in one trip last week. Hopefully they continue to increase in numbers and size. Alex Canham made a fair point the other day when he caught one of the biggest of the trip. It was one of the biggest he could remember catching around here. Some of you may have seen Alex crewing for me earlier this year and it’s easy to forget that he was 8 the last time we had decent numbers of codling here! Hopefully he wont have to wait another 8 years before there is a decent showing again.
Offshore is still producing great numbers of bass, they are feeding very well at the moment and should hang around until the end of November. This should provide a welcome alternative to our general trips with some great sport and some nice table fish too.
I have several weekend dates that have come available including this Saturday if anybody is interested please contact me.
Remember it is often worth giving me a shout if you are cancelled else where and still wish to get out, as we have lots of sheltered fishing available and a big catamaran which makes it even more comfortable.
its always worth keeping an eye out for last minute spaces with groups or where people drop out. I will list my current list of spaces but there are likely to be other dates so its always worth giving me a call. If I am out of signal range I will get back to you asap.

  • 18/04/2024 Fishing Report by Lee Bollingbroke on Sophie Lea (Brightlingsea, Essex)

18 Apr 2024 by Lee Bollingbroke

    Report on-board Sophie Lea

Lots of fish now and every species you would expect for April inc rays hounds lots of dog fish a few bass starting to show up now always on every ones hope to catch list, the weather has been up and down but starting to settle now as it should as we are entering the spring season, we always have individual spaces on our boat to help the lone angler out so don't dispare you will be welcomed and its a way to make like minded friends.
The weather is always our Achilles heal but at least you know when you book a catamaran you will be far more comfortable than if you had booked a single hulled boat and you will appreciate it especially if you suffer sea sickness this is such a debilitating condition but rarely does this effect anglers out on our stable catamaran well worth thinking about before you book a charter boat so check out our web site at www.sophieleacharters.co.uk or
    tel 07774492856 for details.

    Report on-board Bluedawn

Fishing is now good with Whiting Codling showing, and dogfish along with the odd thornback ray, we understand that cost of living is for people are really starting to hurt, and is for us skippers as well, with rising fuel costs and bait, and everything else that goes along with owning a charter boat, we have tried to help our anglers by reducing our cost to you to try and help all our customers, to enjoy a days fishing. phone for revised pices.

    regards Richard

  • 30/10/2022 Fishing Report by Nick Gough on Skylark (Scarborough, North Yorkshire)

30 Oct 2022 by Nick Gough

    Report on-board Skylark

A short video of today's trip which was similar to yesterday's

Every mark we went to today produced a good few fish then seamed to dry up so we did steam about abit today following the tide to maximise fishing for the lads.

As you can see from the short video they had a good mixed bag of really clean fish in fact only 1 codling we had to day was a local kelp cod.

Species wise we had a nice mix of codling, pollock, pouting, dogfish, and ballen wrasse today

Not the best of conditions today with the wind and rain.

On the trip we did see see a good amount of wildlife with a lonely half black beaked puffin following us around for a bit. a few gannets still showing, two bottle nose dolphins, several seals and even a Peregrine Falcon hunting a poor bird which we couldn't Id as it was frantically trying to get away and it did.

29 Oct 2022 by Nick Gough

    Report on-board Skylark

Photos of today's better catches on our winter uptiding trip

Overal everybody on the boat caught a cod to keep which in it self is a massive bonus some of them up until the last hour really struggled but managed to be kept busy catching other species like dogfish, ballen wrasse, pouting and even a whiting.

Best bait today seamed to be dirty squid fished on its own which was slightly unusual as normally tipping off normally gives it a slight advantage.

Noticed today when gutting the fish they are slowly getting small roes forming so hopefully we shouldn't be far away from those better fish which come in the winter months.
