26 Sep 2022 by Scott Belbin

    Report on-board Galloper

As I’m sure you have noticed there has been a marked change in conditions of late. Just a few weeks ago it was balmy out there. I hadn’t worn a jumper in weeks and after a prolonged settled period and warm weather many fish weren’t feeding. Suddenly there were heavy dews in the mornings, northerly winds have prevailed and the daylight hours are getting shorter. All of this has bought the fish back to life again. Dogfish and whiting are now numerous and the thorn-back rays are back on the feed. There are certainly no shortage of bites on our general trips now. the autumn changeover also results in some great variety in our catches too. As the summer species and winter species overlap for a while. The other day we had a great start and end to the trip catching lots of schoolbass. they say the early bird catches the worm and our early start meant we even had some sizable bass before the other boats had left their moorings! With the anchor down and baits out we continued to see some bass mixed in as well as dogfish, whiting, dab, smooth-hound, thorn-back ray and even a codling for Stephen Clark! Don’t worry we let it go so we had one to catch the rest of the winter. I did get my ladybird book of fish out to check I had identified it correctly and it definitely was a codling. I wont be getting my hopes up of any numbers of them in the coming months but it would be nice to see a few again this winter. It was lucky we did let it go though as Robin caught it twice in one day! none of the codling have been of any size but nice to see never the less.
Hopefully this wind will ease off in time for our next offshore bass trips later in the week. At least there are plenty of fish inshore if we cant get off there. I do happen to have a space this Saturday if you are interested.

  • 25/09/2022 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

25 Sep 2022 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

Today was definitely another day that didn’t match the forecast. We were expecting lightish winds first thing and then gradually building as the day progressed. When we came out of the pier ends, it was moving already and just built as the day progressed…..but we were going to make the best of it!

We had a group of mixed experiences on board. Unfortunately a few spent the day putting in a “chum” trail, but the other lads really got stuck in. With slack water approaching as we left the harbour, we went straight to a wreck to try and get a better fish at slack water. The lines started streaming a bit, and we lost too much gear in the three drifts we tried, so that was scratched, and we went to try and find some fresh Mackerel to lure a Ling or two.

Pushing out to a wreck just short of the five mile ground, we found plenty of Mackerel to keep us going for the rest of the day. With a long stretch of rough ground just in front of us, we started at the north end and worked our way back south. Most of the lads went in with Hokkai’s or bait traces with squid or Mackerel. Today, Hokkai’s definitely ruled.

Sea Urchin regular Keith McCance got stuck straight in. He took one or two fish every drift and then connected with something a bit different. He was fishing under the boat, so it wasn’t until the last minute we saw a nice sized Ling shuffle up. It looked a decent size, and we had a go at weighing it, but with the swell we settled on 14lb…ish! As it turned out, the Ling weighed 14lb 12oz which was a great result.

It went a bit quiet, so we moved back into the rough ground at three miles. Two or three small Codling and Ling a drift encouragingly showed signs of life. I’d just gone to get a sandwich from my dinner box, when I saw Karl Crossland struggling. As he was fishing under the boat, I thought he was stuck on the bottom; but I was wrong! He slowly but surely winched up up a nice Ling, which turned out to be 13lb 2oz.

We plugged away for the remainder of what was a tough day. I really enjoyed the day, with some great banter from the boys. If you can catch fish in today’s conditions, you’ll smash em’ in good conditions.

  • 25/09/2022 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

25 Sep 2022 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

Last trip out was Friday with our mixed group of lads.
We steamed North up towards Tees Bay for a change of scenery and worked several wrecks.
Out of the 6 we worked, only 2 of them produced fish with around 30 fish from them both.
Baited rigs again fishing the best with the fresh Mackerel doing the best.
John Dexter from Hornsea, East Yorkshire boating the best fish of the day, a nice Ling of 12lb 12oz.
When we boated the fish I never bothered to weigh it as we were rolling a bit with the weather. I figured it was going to be around the 10lb mark as it was a very short fish. Obviously a lot “chunkier” than we thought!
John took the £50.00 daily prize and was well chuffed.
Well done to him. John is pictured.
Cheers for now and keep the lines tight lads.

So we took him his son and a couple of his friends out on a 3 hour fishing experience and they absolutely loved it. Catching mackerel scad bream and gurnard till it got dark.evryone caught fish making it a most enjoyable day for fishing. Hopefully we get a few more weeks of good fishing before the winter season hits us.

23 Sep 2022 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

Day 3 and their last one yesterday for our team of 4 from Halifax West Yorkshire.
The bait fish were a little thin for the lads to start the day but we found a few to add to the spares left over from the day previous.
We started on a strip of ground just 4.5 miles from the harbour and stayed there for the best part of the morning with fish coming aboard steadily.
Slack water arrived at around midday so we tried a couple of wrecks for a handful of Codling/Ling.
Finishing off back on the ground where Andy pulled up a nice Ling of 12lb 6oz (pictured) which took him the daily 1st prize of £50.00. Well done to him.
The majority of our catch falling to the Mackerel and Squid baited rigs.
A pleasure sailing with you all again lads and look forward to sailing with you all again next year.
    Cheers
