We don't normally like wrecking on a ride so big but as the customers really wanted to try for a bigger fish we gave it a go.
Fishing was very slow from the start with us fishing the strongest part of the tide drifting at a good 2 knots
The anglers did manage to pick up a few whiting and pouting.
As the tides eased back fishing improved with the anglers managing to catch a few strappy ling around the 5 to 11lb area.
Slack water was the most productive time which we expected
While out fishing we had a lot of gannets diving around us with porpoise surfacing with the odd seal popping it head. We had several minki Whales also passing us.
As we travelled back to the harbour we managed to find a pod of approximately 60+ bottle nose dolphins passing us. -

The forecasts for the day were perfect, which was great as the tides were making quite strongly from the day before.
The Mackerel were scarce at the start, but after a short shift of a quarter of a mile they were in abundance. One short drift and we had the bait stocks.
We started out on the grounds near to the Mackerelling session and only clicked three or four fish.
I decided to move out to the areas we had tried a few days previously and the lads started knocking a few fish out on the baited rigs.
At slack water we dropped on to the wreck on the nine mile ground and they took around a dozen fish from it.
Dave (a newby) took three lovely Codling to 8lbs from it which was great. He was over the moon with his efforts!
A lovely chilled day on the water with great company.
Cheers lads and we’ll see you all soon.
Rich.

Fishing Report by Rich Ward

Report on-board Shy-Torque III
I thought I’d leave the reporting from the boat until the end of this year’s Late Summer Competition here at Whitby.
View Boats Page
This one should be called “The Ling Competition!!
The competition came to its conclusion on Sunday and it was certainly one of mixed fortunes both fish wise and weather wise.
There were only 7 days taken at sea with 9 days cancelled for bad weather (seems the days of endless weeks of settled weather are well and truly gone)
In general the fishing was anything but easy with some days only producing into the teens of fish boated.
The first week of the 2 week event saw the best weather and the second week (on the best tides) saw some very poor weather with many of the days cancelled. Luckily we managed to get the last 2 days on the last of the neap tides.
No fish worthy of taking to the scales were caught on the Shy-Torque until Sunday’s last run out.
We worked for the Mackerel first off to gather the bait, which were still plentiful.
Once the lads had a few each we headed out to a couple of wrecks which after a slack week off for bad weather hadn’t been touched.
The first wreck threw just 5 fish out. I’m sure there would have been more if it hadn’t been for a seal the size of a bull which joined us and scattered the fish!!
A short move out to the next wreck paid dividends and the lads picked fish from it for a steady 3-4 hours. Some slightly better fish too for them, with a good number of them around the double digits, with the best one falling to David Shay from Doncaster, a fine fish just short of 17lbs.
Paul Mawson from Brid did hook into something very big which was peeling his line off the reel but sadly the fish slipped his hook after he’d got it clear of the wreck and never showed any signs of feeding again. It will be there for next time!!
Tally from that wreck was around 35 fish with the usual “chuck backs”
After we landed back in Whitby David took his fish to be weighed and it registered 16lb 12oz on the association scales (just 2 ounces short of the second place fish) and took 3rd place overall in the competition. Well done to him.
He wins the £50.00 daily prize plus a free stay at my lads pub, the Station Inn with a £50.00 drinks voucher included.
Nice to see some better quality fish boated at the weekend with every fish bar one caught on the bait. One Codling was taken on the shad and it was foul hooked. .
I’d like to thank all the lads who joined the boat again this year and look forward to seeing you in the future events if not sooner.
Cheers
Rich.

Well what a day with lots of smiley customers
View Boats Page
Mainly ling and mackerel caught today with 5 ling over 19lb
Apart from the skippers 33lb ling
The next heaviest fish was 24lb 9oz
Not the greatest conditions for it we had wind against tide for the first few hours then as slack water came on so did the ling fishing
Then when the tides built up fishing became impossible on the wrecks so we drifted down the sides with the anglers getting a good amount of strappy ling, whiting and mackerel still in good numbers
Great bunch of customers on today and thank you for letting the skipper join in -

Fishing Report by Andy Savage

Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl
With the building tides going over 5m today, but light winds forecast; we had a much sloppier start to the day than I’d hoped for. The NW breeze really spoilt things. We struggled for over an hour to get enough fresh mackerel for bait for the day, then had a few drifts on the rough ground at three miles as the wind was holding us up on the drift.
View Boats Page
After half a dozen drifts with only a few small fish coming up, we moved out to the five mile ground. The drift was slow enough for us to try a couple of wrecks and the wind began to fall away on the run in to slack water. We fished two wrecks for a handful of small Codling, the best going 4lb or so.
As the Flood Tide came through, we ran out a couple of miles to try some more ground marks. As the tide grew we had a few productive drifts. Martin Novo and Bryan Stanton had 13lb and 14lb respectively on the same drift with a couple in the 7-9lb class boated as well by some of the other lads. Next drift, Chris Chatham also took a 13lb Ling and a couple of other 6-8lb fish came up to keep it company. After a hard morning, it was nice to get a few, but unfortunately it was shortlived.
Once the Flood Tide got away properly, we were up to 1.5knots on the drift and the sport died off. We plugged away for the remainder of the afternoon, but once again, it was another hard day at sea, with very few fish caught. Despite the mediocre fishing, I’d like to say a massive thank you to all the lads for the positivity and great chats all day.
Thanks very much for coming, I really enjoyed your company and hope I can deliver a more productive trip next timeUPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl

Overall on both trips the anglers had a mixed bag of fish
With many species making an appearance
For cod, ling, pouting , whiting, haddock, coalfish, and mackerel
Heaviest fish today was a Cracking cod for Steve weighing just over 15lb
No rigs seemed to be preference today with shads occasionally working and baited traces and hokkais also.
Not the greatest weather today with torrential rain but the anglers seemed to enjoy themselves regardless
And they all got a glimpse of the passing minke whales.
