BLUEFIN TUNA OUT OF BRIGHTON!!
View Boats Page
Paul (again) Dennis, Charlie & Will
Dennis had booked Will & Charlie as a 21st birthday present for Charlie whose actual birthday it was. Another cracking bunch of guys and we explained that the previous day there was very little activity but the great sea - state would enable to move faster & further today, we intended to make the most of it.
Once again, not a great deal of activity until we arrived at our designated spot when slowly, things started to develop. A few gulls in the water, Gannets in hunting mode and then the real indicator, Terns lifting up and it started to feel very fishy! Peter Stotesbury had his fish eyes on and sighted a disturbance approx 1/2nm to starboard, quickly followed by another 1/2 mile to Port - gently eased the engines up and picked the Port disturbance which soon became obvious was a significant Tuna bust - the atmosphere shifted from jovial to professional in an instant. Harnesses on and checked, rods manned, outside controls switched and an intercept course plotted. Amazing seeing these huge fish up very close and absolutely smashing the bait fish; as we swung by the short rod exploded into action...... Tuna on!
3 rods quickly taken in, Charlie (birthday boy) securely attached and we were battling our first Bluefin out of Sussex- what a great feeling. First run took 300m line very quickly so we knew it was a good fish and Charlie was on it like a veteran supported by Pete & Jason (a fantastic crew & angler in his own right). Careful manoeuvring of the boat, adjustment of drag and relentless work by Charlie and we had sight of a magnificent Bluefin being leadered by Pete. When the fish is close to the boat with rudders & props in play it becomes a game of delicate movements and patience. Although this was my first Bluefin Tuna I'm no stranger to Yellowfin and the characteristics are identical- languid circling motions which are largely predictable and the leader man exercising both patients and control whilst directing the helmsman. After a 30 minute duel Jason managed to get the flying gaff perfectly in the gap of the lower jaw and there was collective sigh of relief and euphoria - we had done what he had set out to do.
A quick measure alongside revealed the magnificent fish to be around 78" which placed it in the 350lb - 375lb range. A slow recovery swim and it was upright, full of colour and tail working hard within a couple of minutes so the decision to release as soon as possible was made. A couple of quick photo's and off it went with a few powerful flicks of the tail..... mission accomplished, the first ever Bluefin Tuna caught out of Sussex
We immediately set the gear to work again and once again, another bust - then another with fishing going under by the time we got to them and no takes. In all we saw 6 busts with an estimated 50 fish in each, in an area of around 10 square miles so quite probably different fish and plenty of them; that bodes very well for the remainder of the season which runs right up until 31st December this year as more fish will be tracking their way up from the Southwest so the chances are going to get better and better in the coming weeks and months.
We could have had another 3 or more fish to the boat as making our way back there were several busts very close by but time was not on our side and we could have been out there all day and well into sunset such was the proliferation - literally hundreds of fish.
A huge thank you to Pete & Jason for their invaluable expertise onbaord, to all that have (in whatever capacity) supported our efforts and of course to the anglers who have had the faith to book with us on our exploratory trips.
We are now taking bookings for Bluefin Tuna trips out of Brighton, 4 anglers maximum £950 for the whole boat 8hr trip and additional hours charged at £150/hr...... we drive a long way currently and are flexible about times as long as we can agree them at time of booking so if you want to catch one of these magnificent fish out of Brighton drop us a line and come see, feel and experience these amazing fish.
Best wishes

Some of the better fish from today's trips
View Boats Page
We started the day running out to the inshore wrecks with the plan to keep running offshore.
First wreck fishing was steady with strappy ling coming up with the occasional better ling round 11 to 12lb mark we tried several other wrecks while running offshore this seemed to be what all the wrecks produced today nothing really much bigger. We did find more cod today than yesterday but they were around the 2 to 4lb area so we didn't take photos.
Heaviest fish today was a ling weighing 14lb 2oz caught by Jamie who had been fishing with us on Wednesday and really struggled to get a decent fish.
As well as the ling and cod the anglers also caught whiting, pouting, a red gurnard and a few mackerel.
The 3 hour trip we ran inshore as the sea had picked up a bit and from the start the anglers got strait into the mackerel after a few drift they managed to find a few nice Pollock around the 4 to 5lb area and a codling and coalfish
Everybody caught something to take away -

Today I once again had the pleasure of The Keel Inn Fishing Club from Barnsley aboard. They came with a slightly depleted crew, with only five anglers able to make the trip this time, but they more than made up for it with the brilliant banter they have.

After encouraging results yesterday and with ESE winds forecast for the afternoon, we had a chat and the lads were happy to run south to some wrecks in a similar area as the day before, which involved a bit of a steam, pushing tide. The sea was almost flat clam when we arrived at the first wreck and when three rods of the five went straight in I breathed a sigh of relief; there were a few feeding fish at home. Like the previous day, the stamp of mainly Ling was decent again.
In fairly short order, “Chips” Mallin bumped two (or maybe the same) what he said felt like big fish. Next drift he was into another chunk as his Mackerel baited muppet trace was snaffled. After a slow but steady scrap I scooped up a nice Ling which weighed in at 16lb 14oz. Next drift, we had four fish on at once which resulted in a brace of 8lb Ling, an 11lb 13oz Cod for Tog Edwards and a 13lb 2oz Ling for Gaz Jones. It was like we could do no wrong!
The wreck kept us entertained for a couple of hours and as the sport slowed a little, we had a run down another couple of miles to a nicely spread wreck. We were on the run into slack water, so the drift speed had slowed from 1.2knots down to 0.4knots. The wind blew us gently across the wreck and we got plagued with 3-4lb strap Ling every drift, which isn’t ideal as they don’t go back to the water very well after capture. Just as I was about to move us, Daz Tango hooked a slightly better one a smidge under double figures, but that was the best we got.
Another chat, and we agreed to go and have the last hour on the same wreck that we started the day on, to see if we could get one of the monsters that Chips had lost off. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be, but the lads got a couple of smaller Ling each drift to keep it interesting.
For once; the weather was ok, the fishing wasn’t bad and the company was excellent. Thanks very much lads for a fantastic day out.UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl

Today we managed to find two ling over 20Lb both personal best for regular Dave Lakin heaviest fish also beats the fish which claimed the heaviest fish caught on skylark title two days ago
Heaviest fish was 25lb 8oz and the next one was 23lb 5oz.
This is the first double twenty we've had on the boat ever!!!
Also on the same trip heaviest Cod caught was 11lb 4oz
Also caught on the trip the lads had several ling, cod, haddock, pouting, whiting and a few mackerel.
We did also see a minke whale passing while steaming to another wreck -

After a week off for a family holiday, it was back to sea again yesterday.

With a small neap tide, I hoped to spend the day wreck hopping, but unfortunately it just didn’t turn out that way. The only part of the day that went to plan was catching plenty of Mackerel to start off. With a WNW breeze, the wind pushed us out to sea across the tide (which I don’t like) and we tried three wrecks for nothing at all. Then we found one wreck that did one or two fish a drift for half an hour, but then it dried up.
We then tried rough ground at five miles, three miles and another wreck for literally nothing. It was a headbanger of a day and I was as disappointed with the day as the lads were, despite the effort we all put in.
Today with light winds “forecast” and still only a moderate tide, we agreed to have a go on a few wrecks, but to run south to try and get away from the massive amounts of feed that I believe is blighting the sport at Whitby at present. It was one of my fishing days, so there were only seven of us fishing, giving plenty of room. First drift on the first wreck and we had three rods in, wrestling up three reasonable Ling in the 6-8lb class which was a relief after the previous day.
Just as we were getting stuck into a few fish, the wind lifted and whoever guessed the weather should give their head a wobble!! We were treated to NW winds in the 15-17mph range which really made it lumpy and tricky fishing conditions. Credit where credit’s due, the lads just carried on taking fish every drift. We didn’t find anything massive, but a nice stamp of Ling including a couple of doubles to Dave Sharp and Simon West were good to see. We didn’t have loads of Codling, but we did take a couple over 6lb.
Mackerel on muppet traces dominated, but Squid still did a few. Streaming lines meant the shad’s didn’t get a look in.
Thanks for a really enjoyable day lads.UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl
