We say the the bigger fish come out to play in January and we’re not wrong. Fishing so far this month on the uptide / downtide grounds has been fantastic with some lovely cod coming over the rail. A better stamp of fish are now showing with plenty of 3lb to 5lb plump codlings. We also had a few around the 6lb to 8lb mark and over the weekend a couple of crackers by regular Dave Jenkins with two personal bests in one day with first drop of the flood tide, seen him pull a nice 11lb fish over the rails and then last drop of the day a cracker of 15lb and finishing the day with a cracking bag of 33 cod he was over the moon. All fish falling to unwashed squid and blacks. We have a busy week ahead so hopefully there’s a few bigger ones still to be caught. For info or to book a trip with us contact Barry in 07470354403

Report on-board Better Days
After a week of strong winds, the herring shoals have finally been dispersed allowing us a better chance to hook those larger fish feeding on them. The skate are well and truly inshore with an average of 10 a trip with our best just under 15lb. Even the whiting are starting to thin out, producing more good sized dabs and Bass with the tide. Report on-board Mistress Linda / San Gina3
At last some decent weather cold, sunny and light winds which allowed us to venture offshore chasing Spurdogs, yesterday as we settled at anchor and the baits hit the seabed we were inundated with conger eels ranging from 8lb to 40lb, as the tide eased and the north west wind pushed the boat south we hit our target with the best Spurs being landed by Ian N weighing 19lb 12ozs and not to be outdone Simon landed a Tope of 35lb as the tide increased we came inshore and found some nice whiting, more eels and another Spur for Ian again weighing 18lb. Today my anglers choose to fish locally and found yet more eels, Blonde Rays, and some plump whiting as the flood tide increased someone suggested we drown a few worms and knowing how poor the harbour is fishing I jokingly said let’s go plaice fishing, what a great decision as on the 1st drift we had Plaice and Grey Gurnards followed by Tub Gurnards on successive drifts and to top it off Malcolm landed a small Octopus. After analysing the results and hearing what the local netters are landing I think this winter last years summer fish are still here.

We have managed to get a couple of trips out to start the new year off. The weather hasn’t been perfect but we are lucky that the sheltered waters of the blackwater estuary and surrounding areas mean we can got out in most weather if we want. Happily there are still plenty of fish to be caught giving us good reason to head out. The sprats have arrived in the estuary which has distracted many of the bigger whiting although there are still numbers of smaller whiting taking our baits. The last couple of trips have produced a few nice dabs for us with out even targeting them. Dad had a trip booked with a few of his regulars the other day. There were only 3-4 anglers on board and they still managed 79 dabs on a nice leisurely day in the comfort of the estuary. There have been plenty of whiting mixed in to make for a busy day on the right tides. The mild weather has kept the thorn-back rays and dogfish feeding. The fish are a bit lethargic and finicky but we are still seeing a few in the right places. Last weekend we headed out in a load of wind with the Maldon sea anglers on board. We spent the morning catching dabs, pouting and whiting with a 5 bearded rockling making a surprise appearance. We moved for the afternoon to target some rays. The fishing took a while to get going but the lads had 10 thornbacks and lost a couple more as well as catching some more whiting and dogfish. The biggest ray went to martin and just went over double figures. On the way in the lads commented that they were pleased they had made the effort to go out and I was pleased we could find a few fish on a windy day.

I have a few spaces coming up if you wish to get out soon, if the weather stays this mild the rays should move inshore in numbers in the next few weeks. If we get the weather and tides we will be heading further off in search of spurdog and alike which I think will also happen early this year so please book early so you don’t miss out.
