We had a fantastic father and son run out this afternoon, all thanks to Charles for organising the trip.
Lots of mackerel, sunshine and rainbows in no particular order! Possibly the most rewarding short trip so far this season. :-)

18 Jun 2024 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

Compared to Saturday and Sunday, it was a much slower day on the fish yesterday for our 3 lads from Coventry.

Paul Burgoine and his mates Gary and Joe chartered the boat for themselves for the day so plenty of space for them!

The day didn’t start out too bad with an odd fish here and there wherever we stopped, but as the day progressed we found the fish didn’t seem too interested wherever we were.

Paul fished the best out of the 3 of them with around 10 fish for himself including a nice double up on one of the wrecks.

Tally for the day was probably around the 30 keepers mark, but the lads didn’t want the Ling we caught and they were safely returned, leaving around 20 Codling to keep.
Certainly not your red letter day but a very enjoyable day out non the less.

Another day where barely any fish were taken on the shads and everything falling to the baited rigs.

Great to meet you lads and hopefully see you again sometime in the future.

    Cheers for now

    Rich.

  • 17/06/2024 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

17 Jun 2024 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

For the last two days we’ve had fairly similar sort of outcomes in terms of the fishing results. The sport hasn’t been frantic, but there are fish almost everywhere that you try.

Sunday was a group of mixed experience anglers and we started off trying to find a few Mackerel. I don’t like to waste too much time trying for them until they’re here in numbers. After two drifts we had amassed about a dozen and then we moved off to try some wrecks with it being a small neap tide. Each wreck we tried we had a few fish, but it wasn’t fantastic.

I don’t really like weekend fishing, as there are so many more boats about than during the week, which on the small tides makes it difficult to get a clear run at the wrecks you want to fish. Looking south it was very busy, with a couple of the of the other Charters boats and loads of buzzers zooming around. I watched quite a few boats run past us, then went in the opposite direction, heading North.

It was much quieter up there (for a change) and we spent the rest of the day wreck hopping. Everyone had a few to take home, but we were mainly plagued by strap Ling on the fresh Mackerel. The biggest fish we took was only around 5lb, so no great shakes in that department.

Today was a great group of lads. Simon Ulyott always books the boat for his friends and I always look forward to their days as they’re excellent company. We planned to have a similar sort of day as Sunday, but went south this time as today there was only a couple of boats out, so we could pick the wrecks we wanted to fish. The Mackerel drift produced only four fish so we moved onto some wrecks.

In a similar vein, we just got a few from each wreck, but they had probably all been visited during the weekend. Every now and then we managed to find a better fish, and Jon Cammack went for quality over quantity taking the biggest fish sweep with a 9lb 12oz Ling, backed up with a 7lb Codling. With most of the boys using Squid on muppet traces, we had a few more Codling today, amongst the strap Ling.

I’ve really enjoyed the last few days and it’s been great to finally string a few days together at last. Thanks to everyone for their support

  • 17/06/2024 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

17 Jun 2024 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

It was my full intention to run to a few wrecks inshore to the South yesterday with our mixed team of regular anglers. It didn’t happen!

We kicked the day off looking for a few fresh Mackerel around the 2-3 mile stretch to no avail, so decided to have a go at a bit of scrap just 2 miles from the bouy.
4 Codling the first drift, then 3, then 2 and yes, 1 more!
10 fish to start the day was ok I guess, especially as we were only a stones throw from the harbour!

Next stop was another bit of wreckage a couple of miles East of there.
A poor show from that one with just a couple of fish. I think it had been fished the day before.

I asked Fergus my crewman to toss the coin as to which way next. That way we could all blame him if it went wrong!
He suggested somewhere I hadn’t thought of and off we went.
    Good shout young Ferg!

A couple of wrecks located very close to each other just a few miles further on made for some steady sport for the team for the rest of the day, with Ling to 11lb 7oz caught by our most regular angler on the boat, Paul from Brid and Codling to around the 7lb mark by Dave Shay.

Glenn Stocks and his son-in-law Nick enjoying some decent sport between them. Glen having a nice “double up” of Codling on one of the wrecks too.

A long time angler of ours, Chris Wake from Kilnsey Cragg in the Yorkshire Dales and his mate Dave, also doing well with a slack box of fish between them.

Nearly every fish today was tempted by the rigs baited with squid and frozen Mackerel. Very little on the artificial stuff.

Aside the Bangladeshi style cloudbursts throughout the day, it was a great trip with great banter as always!

Cheers lads and see you all soon.
    Rich.

    Report on-board Piscary

Only 1 match on the boat this week,we had the Royal Navy vs the England home nations team in preparation for the home nations in 2 weeks. Very difficult conditions for me in the very strong northerly wind, struggled to get the boat right on the fish Ocean Runner being the bigger boat handle the conditions much better and absolutely smashed it almost trembling my scores on the day. Not that many species due to the manner of the rules and scoring system, however we did have some stunning Bream. Top 3 on each boat Ocean Runner

    2nd Cliff Newbold 133
    3rd John Bellamy 118
    Piscary
    1st Kev Samson 57
    2nd Gary Geoghegan 53

On the pleasure side of things this week we have had a mega week, plenty of really nice Bream around still and lots of species, too many to mention but including a bit late first Garfish of the year Flounders! Silver Eels and our second ever Greater Weaver!

  • 16/06/2024 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

16 Jun 2024 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

After a fantastic two weeks away on the I.O.M at the TT races with our Charlie and our mate Mick Jones, it’s back to work again.

Some lovely calm conditions yesterday although rather wet at times, gave Daryl Machant and his mates a decent chance on the fish.
Nice neap tides too for the lads, making for some easy fishing.

We ran to a couple of wrecks North of the harbour to start the day, using the remaining ebb tide.

First one produced just a handful of fish, but the second one kept us going for a couple of hours. The lads plucking an odd fish or two each drift.

Cod, Ling, Pollock,Coaley and a few Haddock coming off that one. Bono taking a double hook-up of Haddock.

Good to see fish coming up on the artificial lures again, as well as the bait obvs.

After we had picked that wreck clean, we decided to trot back into another small wreck inside and took ten more keepers from that one.

To finish the day off we dropped on a strip of ground and were very pleased to see a large amount of feed on the ledges.

We dropped in full of excitement and expectation but sadly not many bigger fish feeding there yet. Just ten or so more fish off the ground over the last three drifts.
I’m thinking it won’t be long before this area starts fishing really well.

John (Sped) having the best catch on the boat with around a dozen fish with Codling to just over 5lb.
The rest of the team taking half a dozen to ten fish each.
Daryl taking the heaviest fish, a nice Ling just over 11lbs (although Fergus’s picture doesn’t do it justice )

Young Fergus filleted the fish for the lads on the way home and reported in that we’d had around sixty fish to keep which wasn’t a bad days work at all for the six of them.

Cheers lads, always a pleasure sailing with you guys.

Looking forward to the next few days where we will be trying some more inshore wrecks. A mate of mine tells me the water is clearing nicely inshore too so fingers crossed.

    Cheers

  • 15/06/2024 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

15 Jun 2024 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

Today I had the pleasure of the Milnrow Sea Anglers aboard for their first trip of the year. The six lads had booked the boat for a day out on the wrecks. I didn’t do a catch report for my last trip (Thursday 13th), because quite simply it was very poor fishing. We tried everything for very little return, so I was hoping for a marked improvement today.

We headed out with around an hour until slack water. Instead of wasting time trying to catch Mackerel we dropped straight on a wreck a couple of miles from the pier ends. With us losing tide, I’d recommended going in with bait traces (as opposed to Shads) and we hit the ground running, taking up to four fish a drift for the next couple of hours. After the last trip, I was relieved to get a few fish. The water looked to have cleared out a bit and we took mainly Codling and strap Ling, with an odd Gurnard and Pouting.

Once sport slowed up, we moved on, having a quick drop for Mackerel whilst on our way to the next wreck. With the tide now running some of the lads switched over to Shads and they worked well for the rest of the day, which suggests the water clarity is improving again.

We fished a further four wrecks while moving progressively further south. I noticed that the further south we went, the lads on Shads were not catching many fish clean in the mouth and the slower the sport appeared to be overall; so just after dinner we ran back north a few miles. That did the trick and we ended the day in a similar vein as we started. I don’t accurately count numbers of fish, but I’m fairly sure that today the Shads must have equalled the bait caught fish.

Pink and white were the standout colours today on the Shads and Hokkai’s. If we put fresh Mackerel on we got pestered by strap Ling, so we mainly stuck with Squid, or Shads which the Codling showed a preference for.
We caught no monsters today, with the biggest Ling being around 7lb and Codling to just over 5lb; but the most pleasing aspect was the consistency. With experienced anglers aboard, they knew when to make the changes to get the best from the day…….and the banter was brilliant!! Thanks lads.
