Fishing Report by Peter Mackintosh
on Mistress (Tyne, Tyne and Wear)

Report on-board Mistress
After another Northerly wind, we set off North on a lazy, rolling swell to a bit of ground not far out of the harbour. The sun was shinning, but the cool wind kept the temperature down all day.

Looking at the water colour, brown from never ending rain flowing out from the river, I wasn't that optimistic about our chances, but we were straight amongst the fish from the first drop. Mostly smallish codling, with a few a bit bigger - to about 1lb and a half at first.
We moved on, with the tide flooding, further North and away from the river mouth and the water clarity started to improve and so did the fishing. Another bit of ground, with plenty of juveniles and again a few bigger Codling to about 3lb. Every drift producing lots of bites and fish.
The wrecks produced fish too. Nothing really big but a decent stamp of better Codling, to about 5lb or 6lb. It was none stop fishing all day, whether it was on the ground or wrecks.
Apart from codling, a few nice Wrasse were caught, one which was bright blue, a colour I'd not seen before. There was the odd Coal Fish, Whiting, plenty of 'Scotchies' and a couple of mackerel, which were a good size for the time of year. Hopefully, the bigger shoals can't be far away because the birds were chasing shoals of sprat, so shortly the mackerel will be hunting them too.
After the tide turned, the great fishing continued and everyone aboard picked away all day. There was a fair few double hook ups. Best lures were pink or orange hokkais, baited with prawns or squid. I persisted with the shads but they didn't really fish well, I only took 1 juvenile on them.
Tony (pictured) managed to catch a fair few Codling, including a few in the 5lb to 6lb bracket.
All - in -all, a fantastic day's fishing with a great set of lads and great banter.
Tight lines. -

Fishing Report by Andy Savage

Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl
Today was a “Tick Over” type of day…..We didn’t smash it out of the park, but equally, it wasn’t a complete wash out!

I had a great bunch of lads on, and with everyone being aboard for 0615hrs, we had a nice early hop. After a couple of days of moderate Northerly winds, I thought the inshore grounds might still be a bit green, so opted to run out to try a few wrecks. First stop at 12 miles was a wreck we filled up on a couple of weeks ago; but today the water resembled a “Kermit the Frog Smoothie” with the May-Bloom. After only three drifts and three Pouting, we pressed on for another eight miles.
Next stop was a bit more encouraging as I drifted over the small wreck, it was lit up nicely on the echo sounder, so clearly some fish in residence. The boys went over with a mix of muppet bait traces and Hokkai’s baited with Squid or Mackerel and we started to pick off a fish or two each drift. Paul Mawson took a nice Ling just under double figures and we had a reasonable stamp of Codling 3-4lb, plus Haddock and a couple of Coalie’s. We persevered through slack water and waited for the flood tide to come through, before eventually moving on another five miles to what turned out to be, our last wreck of the day.
The drift line allowed us to run along the substantial wreck and we spent the next couple of hours taking 2-3 fish a drift. As mentioned, the sport wasn’t electric, but it was consistent. Everyone managed a few fish and Joe Fender took a nice new Pb Codling of 6lb 12oz, which was great to see. Just towards the end of the day we were joined by “Sammy the Seal” and after stripping off a couple of fish, sport dried up. We agreed to have one more drift and pleasingly, Will Freeman connected with a nice Pollock which he wound as fast as he could, while we all laughed and waited for the seal to nick it. Thankfully he managed to land the fish and we headed back into Whitby.
As alluded to earlier; it was far from a Red Letter Day, but the lads all fished well and kept at it consistently. Thanks for coming everyoneUPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl

Report on-board Galloper
The bass fishing continues to be good at the moment. There have been some quality fish showing on many of our trips and at times large numbers too. Bottom fishing is normally producing the better fish and the bigger numbers are coming on lures when conditions suit. As well as bass our general trips are producing good hounds, tope, rays and several other species too.

This time of year is great for variety so I thought I'd share some of the different species we've caught lately. Garfish, lobster, tope, bass and hounds on our general trips. The scad was offshore but a proper jumbo one so thought I'd share it.

Report on-board Shy-Torque III
Two day report on Shy-Torque III.
View Boats Page
Saturday 25th May.
There is a fair amount of Algae Bloom in the water at present making for some quite difficult fishing for the lads n lasses.
On occasion, we do find an odd clear patch and this is when we click a few fish.
What’s been noticeable is that the clarity on the surface few fathoms isn’t too bad at all and we can see the fish some 20-30 ft down. We just need it like that on the bottom again now. Shouldn’t be too long.
A mixed group of 8 anglers on the boat on Saturday gone.
We started off by working the ground on the 5 mile for just a couple of fish and within a couple of hours and half a dozen stops later, found ourselves out on a small wreck just over 12 miles offshore. Just one fish from that.
Fish count by this time was just 5 fish to keep. The usual throw backs too.
We continued the hunt, working some more bits in to the West, where we did start picking a few more fish up, but nothing to make it a top drawer day.
The banter helped make the day go by as usual, with some great conversations and stories about motorcycles, my other great passion!
Thanks to the lads for having robust patience throughout the day and working tirelessly to try and tempt the fish to the hooks.
Monday 27th May.
Yesterday saw another mixed group join us on the boat.
As the forecast was very good for the day, we chose to run a little further out to try and get some clearer water from the start.
We steamed to a wreck 18 miles East of the town to start the day.
First drift was good with around eight fish boated. Three of them (Coalies) falling to Joseph. He had dropped down with a five hook Mackerel trace a clicked a treble!!
Great sport!!
I also managed a nice Codling on a shad, fair and square in the mouth. Clearer water it seemed.
We picked away at the wreck for a couple of hours, taking an odd fish or two each go.
Allen Hallworth, Joseph and their two friends from Manchester filling a “Gorilla” tub to the top between them with Codling, Ling, Coaley and the odd Pouting.
Reasonable fishing for them.
After we had milked the wreck, we moved in towards land a few miles and tried another couple of wrecks, where the group took another dozen or so fish.
The majority of fish were taken on the baited rigs with the usual squid and frozen Mackerel.
We saw a Mackerel on each of the last few trips too!
Nice to see those fellas in the water again and it won’t be too long until young Fergus is washing down a messy boat again!!
Cheers for now and good fishing to you all wherever you wet your lines.
Rich.
