I hope everyone is enjoying the hot weather over the last week r so, long may it continue. Spring/ summer fishing is properly underway now. Inshore we have had the first black bream of the year, more should arrive on the next spring the first weekend in May and then some bigger ones shortly after. On the drift we are getting some cracking early season plaice as they start to feed after they have finished spawning. Tim Davies has the biggest so far at a whopping 4lb 8oz. Turbot and brill have mostly been on the small side so far but Phil Folkes did manage our first double of the year at 11lb just to prove the bigger ones are down there. Out on the wrecks the big Pollock are still plentiful although we shall shortly stop winding the lures and start bouncing to target the summer cod. In the last week we have seen 3 decent sized john dorys which is always a welcome bonus. You don’t always see 3 in one year let alone 3 so close together. The biggest went to Russ Orchard at 5lb 9oz. Evening trips start at the beginning of May to target the bream and plaice.

The last few trips have all been inshore looking for some quality Bream fishing, although this season is slower to start than the last few years the Bream have still been coming in increasing numbers each trip and with good tides this weekend we should have some excellent sport. Thought I’d put a report on here regarding a couple of good days we had on the spurdogs recently. My self and my anglers head off in search of the spurs every spring and are usually happy to see one or two fish mixed in with our usual species. Not many charter boats target spurs from essex and even less are regularly successful so we feel happy to see a few. The other week we were lucky enough to hit into one of the mythical spurdog packs two trips on the bounce. We picked up 47 on the first trip and over 80 on the second (which was absolute madness). That’s without the thorn-backs, dogfish and even a stray bass that turned up. For full report please see my website or facebook.
It is 10 years since I first had spurs off here and I we have caught more in these two trips than I have had on the boat in the last 10 years. Many of the lads who have been this weekend are regulars and fully understand how rare a trip like these two are. Most of the lads have been off here before and several have already been off here with me this year. We will try again for them but im sure it will still be as hit and miss as ever.
Please remember that with the offshore trips as with any trips it is no good waiting for somebody else to have a good day and then book up as the fish may be gone by the time you get out. always for for what your going to catch today. not what somebody else caught yesterday. Another competition win for the Shy-Torque III !!
This years Spring angling competition has just ended here at Whitby. A good number of days were lost to poor weather and we personally only got to sea for 8 days out of the 2 weeks.
Never the less, when the weather was on our side we managed to push off to some of the distant marks and were rewarded quite well on a few of the trips.
The competition wasn't producing anything big to talk about for the first week with the majority of fish being landed averaging around the 5lb mark.
One of my mates, Carl Farrar landed a ling which was nudging the 11lb mark which took the lead in the event and looked for some time like it was going to do the job and win the top prize of £1000.00
Then, on the 20th April, we had perfect conditions and dropped lucky on an offshore mark we have that seldom gets worked. Richard Horobrov from Barnsley was fishing with us on the day and clicked a beautiful cod weighing in at just over 14lbs.
When we got it back to the scales he weighed in at 13 lb 14 oz which meant he had taken the lead. The fish only had to hold for 2 more days and luckily for Richard it did!!
A very nice £1000.00 first place prize plus his £50.00 for heaviest fish of the day making it a great competition for Richard and the Shy-Torque crew!
I'd like to thank all those who fished with the Shy-Torque in this years Spring competition and hopefully we will see you all in the Summer one where we will be out to get our second win of the season!!

The excellent cod fishing on the Uptiding grounds continued sunday the lads smashed it it fished very well the 6 lads on the boat had around 70 cod between them the best 7 lb taking 1 st prize in the daily’s on the last day of the WCSA festival.
Over the festival the big one has evaded us but the amount of cod the lads got during the competition was very good indeed the weather looks unsettled this week but still a chance of sneaking a day .
