It's great when you take a family with young children out fishing for the first time and they experience their first fish. Annabelle 10, Ben 8 and Phoebe 5, around 40 small bass between them most returned but a few keepers for the barbecue and some chunky mackerel all from the Eastern Solent.

The next generation is what it's all about .

Well there's a first time for everything! I've often seen a hooked bass chased by other bass as we bring it in. It happens with lots of fish where I gather they are confused by the excitement of the hooked fish and don't want to miss out. However they normally shy away as they near the boat. But on this occasion I was able to net the non-hooked bass before netting the one he was chasing! We've caught two on one hook and even caught them on the grips of the weight but you can tell there are a lot of bass around when I can just pluck them from the sea without the need for a rod!

Newcomers to the Shy-Torque Phil Bland and his mates from Bedale joined us yesterday.

We mostly picked away on the rough ground marks as the lads were fairly new to the game, dropping on just two bits of scrap over slack water.
Again, the baited rigs out fishing the artificial gear with squid being the best bait. I’m fair sure the bloom is lurking down there in places.
Tally for the day, around 35 fish to keep which between 10 men isn’t a good show by far, but the lads really enjoyed the day out with us nevertheless.
Cheers lads, nice meeting you and enjoyed your company. See you again soon.
Rich.

Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl
After two quite decent days, the last two have been fairly poor by contrast. Sunday saw a group of mixed experience anglers aboard, and with the wind still coming from the Northerly quarter, we planned a similar day as Saturday when we did ok.
View Boats Page
Thankfully, the fog had lifted, so it was nice not to be glued to the radar as we ran North. Starting off on a few wrecks, we had literally an odd Pouting and few undersized Codling and tiny Ling. Jamie Britton managed to trip up a Codling of 5lb 8oz, but other than that it was pretty dire. On the turn of tide, I decided to move us onto some ground marks, running back towards Whitby. We picked up an odd strap Ling and Codling, but there was nothing to shout about. The lads used the regular tactics, but disappointingly it turned out to be a poor day on the fish catching front.
Today I had Alan and his friends on who fish with me regularly. They had asked for a 12hr trip so we got away just after 0500hrs and with the poor results of the previous day etched firmly in my mind, we ran off to try a couple of wrecks further out. First stop at 12 miles kept us going for an hour or so, with one or two fish each drift. Ling were the dominant species, but they were all straps, so we moved on.
Thankfully the next wreck was lit up a treat with lots of fish and feed marking, but it took a few drifts to nail down where we could catch them. With that sorted, we had a couple of hours fishing away steadily until we lost the tide, at which point the sport dried up. We had some nice Codling around the 5lb mark and unsurprisingly, with all the feed marks, there were Coalie’s on the hunt!
Simon was clipping them regularly with the Slow Pitch Jig, but they also came to the squid and Mackerel bait traces as well. The average size was in the 2-3lb range, which isn’t the norm for round here (we usually get a smaller stamp); but was good to see nonetheless.
Once the Flood Tide came through the drift picked up and finished the day with a few fish off a final wreck and then the last hour on some rough ground. The day wasn’t a disaster by any stretch, but I’ll be honest….I’d hoped for better.UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl

We played around on a couple of bit of scrap to start the day for a meagre picking of small chuck back fish.
I move the boat out to a few ground marks next and the lads started picking away at the fish there.
Just one or two some drifts and an odd drift with a few more.
Baited rigs were the order of the day again with thin strips of squid on the Hokkai traces doing the best.
The bigger fish were elusive for the lads but at the end of the day they were all very pleased with their tally of 50 fish to keep, along with the juvenile throw backs.
A nice range of species too with Codling, Ling, Haddock, Whiting, Pouting and Wrasse.
A very enjoyable and chilled day on the water with five great blokes.
See you on your next one lads,
Cheers
Rich.

Fishing Report by phillip browning
on Braveheart II (Wallasea Island, Essex)
May 2024 by phillip browning
Report on-board Braveheart II
As I predicted this last set of spring tides has started to push the better smoothounds and bass inshore. We are still not seeing the crazy numbers of smoothounds expected at this time of year, but we are seeing a really good average stamp of fish with a colossal 20lb 8 oz fish being landed on Friday for angler paul Ashton which has beaten his lifetime p.b by over 5lb and he's been fishing for over 50 years! Also new angler aboard BRAVEHEARTII broke his club angling club record and I await the forms to sign off verification. Some good bass landed the last few days too and another 2 pb's for the anglers of 6lb 9oz & 6lb 8oz as well as a new p.b smoothound for rob Harvey after losing a big fish at the net, the previous week, remember guys change your monofilament line every year..... twice if you fish a lot !!! The may weed ( rot) seems like it's finally starting to clear as its been particularly bad this year especially in the crouch this can only be a good thing and as the water clears will be a prime time to Target bass on lures.

Here's wishing everyone a good season ahead and I welcome anglers old and new aboard BRAVEHEARTII wether experienced or complete novice . We also offer 5 hr trips which are great for families and kids as we also get to see the seals which is a great way to start the day.
