To go, or not to go……that is the question!

With a decent weather “forecast” yesterday, giving mainly light winds, we had a run out. It was a Spring Tide (5.6m), but without the wind, it would certainly be fishable (as it was the day before). A group of mixed experience anglers joined us for the day.
With less than 2 hours before slack water, we started the day on the 5 mile rough ground, with a view to dropping on a nearby wreck at slack. We clipped a few fish on squid baited Hokkai’s just as the tide began to ease, then shuffled across to the wreck. The wreck gave us a fair few fish to Squid baited muppet traces, but nothing of any size. The biggest Codling being around 4lb.
As the Ebb tide got away, we fished the seven mile ground and then moved out to the nine mile ground. Simon and Diane Mulgrave fished with their lines running under the boat all day and caught consistently in very tricky conditions. Most people struggle under the boat, but they both handled it like Pro’s.
Unlike the forecast predicted, on the turn of tide the South Easterly wind began to lift and build. Within the hour, we went from 1.2 knots on the drift to 2.5 knots (which was almost unfishable).
Credit to everyone aboard, they kept plugging away. The lines were streaming off even with 16oz leads, but odd fish kept coming up. Mainly Whiting and an odd Codling. Soran Barber took the sweepstake with a Codling less than 5lb. It very quickly turned into a day that if I had known the actual outcome of the weather, I would have cancelled in a heartbeat.
I completely understand that anglers want to get out fishing, but sometimes it’s not about dangerous sea conditions. In my mind, there is absolutely no point going out to sea when you won’t be able to fish effectively. Fishing is meant to be fun and enjoyable, not a war of attrition. The South Easterly winds this weekend, whilst not strong, are enough to make fishing conditions very difficult/pointless.
All I can say is, I rely on your support and business to keep Sea Urchin going, but I’m not prepared to take anglers out to fish when I know in my heart of hearts, that we’ll be flogging the proverbial “Dead Horse”
If you’ve managed to get to this point in the post without falling asleep, well done.UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl

Report on-board Shy-Torque III
Yesterday’s trip had been advertised as a “Wall trip”as the tides were still running in the Spring range at 5.5m.
View Boats Page
We really need a full boat of 8 anglers to cover the fuel costs with runs of those distances.
We only managed to sail with just the 6 lads as 2 others had dropped out.
The remaining lads agreed to chip in a little extra so we could still do the run.
The fish were a little elusive to start off, but we soon found where they were hiding and the lads were clicking them every drift after 20 minutes or so.
As the ebb started to run, the devils SE wind started too which made the fishing a little more challenging.
The drift kept creeping up and by high water we were running at 2 knots.
A bit quick really but we were still knocking the odd fish out so we stuck it out till the end.
A surprise visit by a Porbeagle too yesterday which was a bit of a nuisance for half an hour as it kept pinching the fish on the way up!!
A nice show of some 50-60 fish between the 6 lads at the end of the day, with a good number of juvenile throw backs too.
Young Fergus and myself landing around 20 between us which was great because my Dad had said he’d like a few fillets.
Fergus began the filleting as soon as we got underway for home and had the lot done and the boat washed down before we landed. Good lad!
The shads worked great yesterday for us and the baited rigs also caught.
Squid and frozen Mackerel doing the business.
No big fish to shout about again but a great days sport.
Thanks to Craig, Tim, Pete, Mark, Johnny and Steve for sailing with us and we’ll see you all again soon.
Cheers
Rich.

Bream session again yesterday. Slow fishing to start but a little tweak to our approach resulted in an immediate and very positive outcome! Lost count of fish but there were plenty of Bream, a few hounds, eels & of course the obligatory Dogfish!

Great to catch-up with some old friends and to welcome so new ones aboard.
A beautiful day out there made all the better by the wonderful company. Not the most challenging of days fishing, those lay ahead when we start the serious Offhsore trips in the coming weeks venturing out to some of our favourite areas.... always an exciting time of the year!
Due to a cancelled dive trip we have whole boat available this Sunday for either 8hr or 4hr trips.
Best wishes

Finally a better spell of weather and time to catch up on actually running charters!

The fishing out of Torquay has been really good, yes the fish arent on every wreck in Lyme bay but we're finding plenty enough fish and some decent sizes too with pollock, coalfish, cod and bass all showing in various numbers. The jigs in the 150 to 20g range are fished along side the traditionweighted boom and lures, the jigs often find the bigger fish.
The JOKER slow jigs and Apex minnows are doing the best work and these products are all I really provide to my clients now. The results speak for themselves, and I cant upload everything so please check out the catch gallery at the JOKER Jigs and Lures website for those!

The bass fishing has improved over the last week or so. These are the best two from the other day with 30-40 caught and 16 kept. There were plenty of hounds, Dogfish, whiting and dabs in between too. Things were pretty busy at times with 3 bass to the top rod on the first few casts before the kettle had boiled! Worm was very important and the lads who didn't use it didn't have as many bass.
