    Report on-board Kelley's Hero Charters

Spent yesterday out wrecking with Ian Dale and Bex on Kellys Hero 3. First time out for me on Ian's new boat and its a peach. Beamy, well equipped would be an understatement. Comfortable on the cruise out, fast , she averaged 17 knots at 2000 rpm. We spent a few hours steaming for distant wrecks. First wreck had a lot of fish on it, with multiple fish coming on each drift for the party on board, which included Sean Heath skipper of Great White 2. Rattle back white eels were doing the trick , I had five fish on the first wreck with a sprinkling of good double figure fish to other anglers.

When the action slowed down a bit, Ian moved off a few miles to another wreck and we were straight back into a good stamp of fish, blue and white red gill evolution accounting for the better fish, the fish box was filling up and when action started to slow we set off for another wreck, with the tide starting to slow down the fishing dropped off but we were still taking the odd fish or two, so Ian moved to another close wreck and I managed to winkle one more Pollack out on a red gill pilchard fished very slowly.

All in all a great days fishing, had 10 Pollack with the biggest knocking the double figure mark. Went home with a lot of fish, very tired, and happy knowing Ian's trips give great value for money if you fish hard.

  • 30/01/2017 Fishing Report by Phil White on Chinook 3 (Bradwell Marina, Essex)

30 Jan 2017 by Phil White

    Report on-board Chinook 3

As you all know by now the cod have not shown up this winter although there still might be a spring run.

However this has not stopped our anglers from having some great days fishing close by in our estuary. There has been a huge influx of dabs along the Thames Estuary, far more than we have ever had before; these lovely little flatfish have provided us with some cracking sport on days when we would have cancelled.

Techniques are completely different to what we would normally be doing but once you have adapted your rigs and style to suit it’s easy.

You can use really light tackle as we are only fishing on the gentle neap tides, carp or spinning rods are fine, 2 hook flattie rigs with one up one down are best.

Choice of bait isn’t critical, tiny bits of worm, squid, herring, mackerel and sprat all work, fished straight down with a plain lead, you don’t need to cast, indeed when fishing straight down when you get a bite, lift up the rod, if the fish isn’t there you can drop back down and wait for it to bite again.

There are a few Thornbacks around inshore; usually numbers start to increase around mid February depending on water temperature.

Offshore is still hard with a few dogfish, Thornbacks and whiting but again things will improve in 2-3 weeks time as the Thornbacks start to move back in.

Prospects are good, there still might be a spring run of cod and there are plenty of other fish to be caught so don’t give up, change tactics and make use of what is available.

    Report on-board High Flyer 2

Well nearly end of Jan 2017, this month has been to say the least extremely hard cod wise. I hate to think of my carbon footprint if i was that way inclined as the miles i have done when weather has allowed is astronomical. No matter where i have been i can honestly say we have caught whiting of all sizes you just cant shake them. I havent bothered taking any more pictures of them how many strings do you want to see on the website! So looking forward its been reasonably cold last couple weeks fingers crossed we ought to see something soon or at least a spring codling run , if not were back to waiting for the return of the spotty dogs accompanied by the skate round about March when weather breaks then were away again. So would just like to mention big thanks to everyone who still supports us even though the fishing has been tough here all down the east coast its very much appreciated hopefully change is in the air. Anyone interested in a midweek trip Feb 6th onwards let me know got few ideas if weather allows as tides will be right nice and slack will be doing bit of distance. Until then tight lines people ,
    Cheers Jon (High Flyer)
