June Catch Report 2014
Pupils from the High School Ashington Had two half day trips, those who were not being seasick the first day managed to catch 7 Codlings and returned 9 smaller Codlings. The second day the sea was a little kinder with not so many pupils being seasick with 9 Codlings being kept and14 smaller Codlings being returned. The pressure was on to catch some fish to take away as a Chef was organised to show the Pupils how to fillet and cook the fish as part of the experience .
With the water still dirty with algae bloom and flood water from the River Coquet and Aln the Mackerel have been late coming with the first Mackerel of any numbers being caught by Paul Hamlin on the 6th of June along with a couple of Codlings up to 4.5 lb .
Due to the dirty water up to 4.5 miles off it was a complete waste of time fishing the rough ground resulting in the worst inshore fishing in early June I have ever Known. Thankfully there were a few fish to be had offshore were the water was slightly cleaner and the water temperature was 14 deg C.
We have been plagued with Northerly and Easterly winds and algae bloom this year stirring the sea up. When the sea settled the second half of June fished well on the ground. The best Cod of of June was caught t by Eric Dodds from Carlisle (see photo).
The best Pollack in June was caught by Ian Berridge Weighting 6.5 lb (see photo)View Boats Page

Rough Ground still fishing well
we had a 6 hour trip and a 3 hour trip today with several cod and pollock caught, conditions were far from perfect with a strong wind all day.
the 6 hour trip produced some good size cod and Pollock between 3 and 5lb and loads of mackerel, but when we got out again on our 3 hour trip the wind and tide were in the same direction and we were drifting to fast so we ended up anchoring up and bait fishing which produce a few nice fish.View Boats Page

Report on-board Supanova II
July and August can be a funny time some years.
This year's inshore fishing from Weymouth has once again been prolific. Plenty of decent Plaice, good runs of Bream the odd good session on the Bass and some cracking anchor fishing with wall to wall Tope, congers, Huss and undulates.
The wrecking has tailed off now which is the norm with the only wrecking trips left in the diary tarheting congers and big bream.
Alderney two weeks ago was a nice trip. Bass, Bream, Turbot, Brill, Cod, Pollack, Ling, Tope, Congers, Huss all featured along with some cracking weather.
Thanks to all who keep coming to weymouth, the remainder of August will see the three day weymouth conger comp, and continued inshore trips after the rays, bream and Plaice. September is a busy month for us all in Weymouth as we are fortunate to be hosting the european and the world championships!! watch this space for full reports of each.
Tight Lines,

on Duke IV (Ramsgate, Kent)

Report on-board Duke IV
The rain is pouring down outside as I write, with todays trip cancelled. Yesterday though the weather was better and the Mackerel came in thick and fast. A few Skate inshore with a good chance of a large female on the cards.
Smoothounds will be heading out of the estuary on their migration back to deeper waters and we look to catching a few on squid or crab baits. Great fighting fish they are too having packed on the weight feeding on crab following breeding. Bass will also be heading back to deep water, with plenty passing Ramsgate. The Whiting are arriving now giving us lots of fish but not as large as some prefer, think of the small ones as fodder for the Bass and Cod so usefull in fattening up the better fish. Lots of small Codling through the summer so hoping for some a return of these fish in the 3-5lb range later in the year. Check out the the Lobsters we landed while backed up to a wreck last week, you never know what could come up next, such the magic of seafishing!View Boats Page

Well what a week's fishing we have had off to the Skerries at the start of the week with a group from London and some fantastic Rag worm from a new supplier, the days bag included Plenty of Plaice, Gurnard's, Blonde Ray along with Mackerel and a few small Whiting. A happy group returned to London with memories of a good day out.
For the rest of the week we have had a group from Morecombe who we wanted to give a bit of variety to so for day one it was off back to the Skerries for some more Plaice this time up to 4lb with a few other species making up a good days fishing. The following day was called off due to the weather but plans were made for the rest of the week.
Time to target the Wrecks and first off it was the 10 to 20 mile out wrecks that although producing fish were only catching Pollack and Pouting the surprise catch in amongst the day's fishing was a lovely 2lb Red Gurnard. Some good fishing but not what we would be expecting from these wrecks at this time of year.
Next day was planned as a long one out to a large mid channel wreck expecting to find some good sized Cod and Pollack, first drift looked good producing several small Codling and Pollack the wreck showing well beneath us with the electronics showing plenty of fish but the rest of the drifts although producing fish did not bring anything of size to the surface, we still managed a good species count with Pouting and Mackerel and some 2lb to 3lb Whiting. A long way to go for fish and not what should have been there.
The final day and for variety we anchored on a local reef with good sized mackerel fillets as bait we sat and waited for the action, one of the group having purchased a new rod before setting off he wanted to christen it and what a way do it with a large Conger in excess of 25lb, at the same time another member of the group boated a 4and half pound Bull Huss, the action continued with another 6lb conger coming aboard and rounding off the day were a brace of Thornback Rays in excess of 12lb. A really good day we had saved the best till last.
The groups Species count for the week included : - Plaice, Dab, Red Gurnard, Mackerel, Whiting, Herring, Horse Mackerel, Lesser Spotted Dogfish, Pouting, Pollack, Codling, Silver Whiting, Tub Gurnard, Conger Eel, Bull Huss, and Thornback Ray. A large amount of these were returned to fight another day but some were taken for the pot during the week our crew kindly filleted and froze the early part of the weeks catch and Friday saw iced up cool boxes loaded for the return to Morecombe with promises of a return in the future.View Boats Page
