on Galloper (Brightlingsea, Essex)

Report on-board Galloper
With our main tope season now behind us I thought it would be a good time to take a look back at this years efforts. as ever there was no shortage of effort from the lads and we managed to get out and fish for them on just about every suitable tide. the weather tried its best to curtail our efforts but with the right people on board, fishing the right area and luck on our side we managed to get all of our trips in. of course having a big catamaran like Galloper helps with this too and she certainly earned her keep again this year.
View Boats Page
As always with this kind of fishing it can bit hit and miss. After all we are targeting one specific species which just so happens to be an apex predator therefore is less numerous than other species lower down the food chain. That said we had tope on all but one trip and when we didn’t have tope we managed other quality fish such as decent bass, hounds or other species.
The Thames estuary is renowned for big tope and although we may not see record breakers each year the average stamp is still good. Most trips we saw fish between 35-45lb with several below this and one or two above this size. The biggest of the year fell to Martin at 47lbs and our best day I my opinion was 6 tope between 35-45lb and several more lost or missed. The most we had was over 20 just 2 days later but not a ‘decent’ fish came to the boat.
From any reports I have seen it looks like once again very few boats even bothered for tope locally. To be honest I only see the occasional private boat or very occasional charter boat targeting them around here now. one or two are caught as bycatch while fishing for other species but seemingly little interest or effort goes in. presumably that would put us as the tope tope boat locally but unfortunately by default rather than competition. This is not just lack of interest from skippers but more often lack of interest from anglers. so as ever I am grateful to the lads who invest their time and money with me. I am particular about how I like to target these fish and tend to vet the anglers that come toping with me. As I mentioned earlier these fish can be hit and miss so I was to stack the odds in our favour. With the lads that do join me I have faith that we will make the most of any chances that come our way. If you would like to join us tope fishing next year please get in touch and get a few trips in for other species first. There’s nothing worse than seeing an angler who’s not been out for a year loose the best fish of the day because he’s a bit rusty! These fish will find any weak point in you or your tackle but once hooked they are never forgotten.
Special mentions to some of my regular tope anglers like both Barry’s, Wayne and Ian Hewett for your continued efforts. great to see you get some decent fish again this year though some were harder earned than others. Also to some of the newer additions to tope angling who caught their first big fish like Kevin and Martin. Once again thanks to all of you for your efforts and giving me an excuse to go hunting big fish.
With our tope season finished most of our offshore trips from now to the end of November will be targeting bass in various places using various methods depending on conditions. From shallow water with worm and surface lures to deep water using lives and lures. Its nearly all light tackle and some of the best bass fishing you will find anywhere. this is better suited to beginners than my other offshore trips so you can hire tackle too. Please get in touch to be added to my mailing list or arrange individual or boat bookings.
Our general trips are still fishing well too despite the unsettled weather. I will post a report on our latest catches soon.
I have individual spaces and possibility of full boat bookings over the coming weeks and months if you want to get out.
Remember it is often worth giving me a shout if you are cancelled else where and still wish to get out, as we have lots of sheltered fishing available and a big catamaran which makes it even more comfortable.

Henry and his three mates fished with us on Tuesday 25th July and had a really good day on the Cod.
Henry’s Cod of 13lb winning him a free trip which he can use anytime in the next 12 months.
Well done to him!
The 2024 calendar is now fully updated with all the information including tide sizes etc and we are taking bookings from now.
The competition dates for 2024 are yet to be announced but as soon as we know them I will adjust the calendar accordingly.
Henry is pictured inset.
Cheers for now,

Fishing Report by Andy Savage
on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)
31 Jul 2023 by Andy Savage
Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl
With some big tides and poor weather coming, today turned out to be our last trip for what looks like a week or so.
View Boats Page
Sea Urchin regular, Alan and his crew had the boat for the day, which is always a good laugh. We had a stop at the Bell Buoy to gather some Mackerel for bait, then headed out on the Ebb tide to try a few wrecks. The first inshore wreck we tried produced just a solitary Codling (and a gazillion Mackerel). With a similar result on the second and third wreck, I began to think we were going to struggle.
We ran a bit closer in, to one of the wrecks which is nicely spread out and not steep sided. Thankfully, the first drift on that wreck saw seven rods go in during the drift. All nice plump Codling, that fell to a mixture of baited Hokkai’s and Muppet bait traces. The fishing was consistent for the next couple of hours, right up to slack water at dinnertime. The fish weren’t enormous, mainly Codling to just over 5lb and a few Ling, the best going 9lb 12oz.
As the flood tide came through, the Westerly wind lifted a bit, so we ran in close and spent the remainder of afternoon drifting rough ground back towards Whitby. Thankfully by this time, everyone had a few fish in the bag, so it was mostly Mackerel bashing to finish off with.
Everyone was fantastic company and I was was pretty pleased with the result, considering the conditions. Well done everyone, some good angling on display today. See you in a couple of weeks.UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl

we have had a brilliant weeks fishing this week. whilst the weather has allowed. some lovely chunky ling and cod now sticking there heads out with lings 14lbs 15lbs 16lbs and 18lbs and a beauty 20lbs
with 4 or 5 double figure lings at least each day. and with the weather and the tides behaving themselves we had almost perfect drifts over the wrecks taking upto 5 and 6 fish a drift
cod averaging 4-6lbs and lings 5-8lbs and a few better lings also a few pollack. taking around 50 to 80 fish per day
if only we could get a decent spell of weather the fishing is spot on when it is

Report on-board Piscary
3 matches on Piscary again this week.On Thursday the strong Westerly winds meant that we had to start in the harbour but this made for a great start to the day with 12 species by 10.00 am with the flood tide we managed to get out into the bay where the fishing continued to be very good ended up with 23 species on the day .
View Boats Page
1st on the day was Steve Harder with 286 points
2nd Kim Bowden 263
3rd Ray Barron 262
On the second day the forecast was meant to deteriorate so we fished the same marks but the opposite way round totally different day still had 23 species again but no where near the numbers.
1st on the day was Darren Phillips on 242 points
2nd Mike Fox 226
3rd Paul Hollyoake 214
After 5 matches and dropping 1
Darren Phillips and Ray Barron are joint at the top with 35 points
Steve Harder is 3rd with 34 points.
Next it was the Friday evening league very poor turn out again with only 5 from the original 10 making it although we did have 2 stand ins
Once again we were forced to fish mostly in the harbour due to the weather conditions however we managed a very respectable 14 species .1st on the night was Stainless Steve Bachelor on 141 points
2nd Martin Bobbet 117
3rd Paul Hollyoake 109

Report on-board Shy-Torque III
Regular angler with us Darryl Machant and the lads joined us for the day yesterday.
View Boats Page
We started out trying for the Mackerel at the bell bouy as I’d seen a couple being landed on the West extension as we left harbour.
Straight away the lads were pulling a few in and after a couple of short drifts we had gathered plenty enough for the day.
Slack water ebb was just after 10.0am so we used the last of the ebb and steamed to a small wreck 12 miles North of the town.
The lads picking around 15 Codling from it.
I think there were a few more on the wreck but as the cross tide drift was making things awkward and as I was missing it as much as hitting it, we chose to run South to a bigger bit of ironwork.
Straight away they were into the fish again and after an hour or so the lads had gathered another 20+ keepers along with usual throw backs.
When we had “milked” that one we finished the day off on the ground and again they were knocking the Codling out.
Old Stevie who’s in his late 80’s out fished everyone on board with 9 nice Codling to around 6.5lbs. Great to see and well done mate!! You’re a star.
It’s really great when you get a few fish at every stop visited. Makes the day so enjoyable. Tally for the day, 40-50 takers.
Thanks lads. Excellent day with you as ever with cracking banter as always!
See you all again on your next trip.

Report on-board Shy-Torque III
Paul Hough and his mates Daniel and Andy booked the boat for themselves today.
View Boats Page
Paul had asked me last year if I would consider taking him out to some of the wrecks we used to work commercially 30+ years ago.
Luckily for them the weather fell perfectly for them and we sailed at 5.0am on a flat calmer.
First stop was a small wreck 30 miles North of the harbour. One fish! Oh shit!
On to another one three miles further on. Two fish! Oh f***!!!
We trotted South then to another bit of scrap that isn’t charted or plotted. Bingo!
At last some fish! Not bundles, but a steady picking for an hour so resulting in a full box between the three of them.
It’s amazing what a morale booster it is when the fish start coming steady.
We ended the day on a short strip of ground 35 miles off where the lads took another box of fish and I managed a box myself. It fished the best out of all the marks. Should’ve gone there first!! Who knew!
That’s one off Paul’s bucket list and I’m really pleased we managed to save the day on the last two marks.
Thanks very much for your company lads and hopefully we’ll see you again next year for another long trip.
Cheers.
Rich
