December Report:
View Boats Page
Christmas is only 9 days away as I write this report and the temperature outside is still 10 degrees which is pretty much unheard of at this time of year. After about 3 weeks of pretty nice weather we are now in for southerly and south-westerly with rain for about a week so it may be after Christmas before we get out again. Cod fishing has been plodding along nicely with some really big fish taking the baits, in the last week of November we had 3 fish over 20lb in two trips which doesn’t happen often enough. Derek Morton took home a 23lber after trotting back cuttlefish bait at the height of the tide with a light lead; this really gave a good scrap on the lighter tackle. Ray Baldwin hooked up to only his 2nd ever cod on the 1st December and despite only being a very short fish it weighed in at 28lb 12oz, our biggest so far this season. During the winter all the fishing we do aboard Silver Spray is at anchor so it gives me some time to play around with our GoPro video camera. It’s taken a little while to get the hang of but this year’ efforts have produced some good footage which can be found on our YouTube channel and our Facebook page. As well as the cod we have seen some very good mixed fishing with congers, bass, whiting, thornback, small eyed and spotted rays all making an appearance. I will be heading out to the offshore banks on the first set of neap tides in January in search of this year’s spur dogs and blonde rays, let’s hope we get some better weather than last year. Until then a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us at Silver Spray Charters.
We are now taking bookings for Cherbourg and Alderney trips in 2014 for individuals and charters. If you would like to fish regularly on a Saturday please email us on info@silverspraycharters.comUPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Silver Spray II

Report on-board Duke IV
Plenty of fish still around although not always the species we all want. Whiting of all sizes with Dabs and of course the Doggies keep the rods moving. There are some Cod around but thin on the ground so proving difficult. Still the odd Bass and Skate to be had so plenty to try for.
View Boats Page
Duke IV will be lifted out for maintenance mid Jan. Hopefully there will be a Spring run of Codling to go for along with Skate and the first of the seasons Bass when she's launched again in Feb.
Merry Xmas and Happy new year to all our clients old and new.
Hope to see you 2014.
Best wishes Skipper Bob -

Report on-board Grey Viking
It's been a very hectic summer having been the hottest for years with day after day of calm seas, so it's been a while since I've had a chance to write a report here on CBUK.
View Boats Page
However, now we are well into the winter Cod season that hot summer seems like ages ago!
The sea temperatures are higher than normal so far this winter and the inshore Cod season seemed to suffer a late kick off. But as we got into November it started to take off and in the last few weeks we've seen some very good Cod and personal bests landed in the mid double to upper 20lb class, with very few smaller Codling putting in an appearance.
The marks that are producing for us are not plagued to death by Whiting and Dogfish which is a bonus when hunting down those big winter Cod. That said we've seen Bull Huss, Conger and a handful of double figure Smoothhounds fall to our Cod baits so it's been an interesting winter so far.
We've had a couple of days when the Cod haven't wanted to play but mostly we've landed some memorable fish on most of the trips.
The best Cod landed aboard Grey Viking so far this winter fell to Matthew Strowger on the 11th December and weighed in at a very respectable 28lbs, so as you can see the rewards can be high! Needless to say Matt was over the moon as in 5 years of trying on his native East Coast his previous personal best Cod was all of 4lbs, so he's smashed that one out of the park!
Looking ahead if you want to try for a big winter Cod of a lifetime I have availability in January (December is now fully booked) and I expect the Cod to be on the ground throughout January. We will also start mid channel wreck fishing in January on the drift with lures after big Pollack and Cod so there will be plenty to fish for in the weeks and months ahead.
If you fancy booking a trip please have a look at my availability calendar here on CBUK (which is updated at least twice a day) or call me on 07850 171722.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and tight lines for 2014.

Report on-board High Flyer 2
This week has been really testing as biggest surge since 1953 hit us on Thursday night , the High Flyer was inches from coming over the quay wall on the high water, debris everywhere was quite frightening and spectacular but also humbling to witness the raw power of the sea. We cancelled fridays trip, headed out Sat to still swelly conditions, the weed and marran grass was prolific all day making fishing extremely difficult. .Ended up hiding inshore Sat quite lucky with a few dabs and whiting for our efforts really hard day. Sunday weather slightly calmer armed with previous day knowledge headed right inside 500 yards off the beach to dodge the weed. Payed off with 3 cod landed, one scabby and returned, Dave pictured here with one of them. We lost 2 others at side of the boat tides pulling strong today. Few whiting came in not as many as usual so decided to flatty bash for the last 2 hours on my favourite mud patch. Plenty of the little blighters giving us a bit of sport to save the day. Thanks to all the lads over the weekend, thought we done well for the conditions.Looking to do a few evening trips if anyone interested please email or ring, starting to get colder now signs of these cod eventually turning up! Lets hope so. Tight lines everyone . Jon. (High Flyer)
