Report on-board Misty Blue
At last the weather has been kind and fishing has been rewarding. We have been busy with the mackerel trips during the week with good fishing on the banks and wrecks, at the weekends with catches of codling and Pollack, the the banks have produced Turbot and Brill, inshore has been disappointing with small fish of all species, we look forward to bigger and better.

Today saw Peter Bloom from Pickering join us again for his annual sharking trip of the year.
Peter is the marine biologist at Flamingo Land Zoo nr Pickering. This was to be his 4th attempt at catching a shark here from Whitby. After boating 5 shark so far this year on 3 trips I was feeling very confident that Pete was going to have his break today.
The last couple of years have seen his attempts be hampered by crappy weather and today was no exception!
We sailed on a fairly good forecast and managed to reach the favoured grounds by around 9.30 (slack water time ) This is usually the best time for us here at Whitby ( today was different ) The weather was nothing like predicted and hampered us no end. A very stiff S/E wind over tide, lines getting caught in the screws etc etc.... the list went on....... Unhappy skipper until 12.30pm when we had our first take.
Nigel Hall my crew man for the day had spotted a fin break on the surface whilst mackerel fishing and reported back to me. With baits checked and extra chum going over the side we waited. Thankfully we had to wait little more than 5 minutes before the fish took hold. Pete took hold of the rod and played what seemed to be a fairly small fish. After around 15 minutes we actually caught sight of the fish. Obviously I was thinking it was going to be a small fish after getting it to the boat so quickly. WRONG!!
When the fish saw the boat ( or Pete! ) it immediately turned and dived some 75 mtrs in no time and just sat there on the bottom. Bigger than we thought for sure!
He wrestled with the fish for some 45 minutes, actually getting it quite close to the boat when " OH F**K " was muttered. The fish had slipped the hook and Pete was left staggered and in awe with what had just happened... me too!!
We re-chummed for the last couple of hours without success and called it a day. Bugger, bugger, bugger.
Nothing more annoying than losing a fish, especially one of these fine creatures.
Pete is coming back for yet another attempt next year and hopefully his 5th will prove to be the one!
Whilst we were sharking he was also doing a bit of bottom fishing and just happened upon a very nice cod of 13lb 1oz..... BONUS !!!

Some lovely cod starting to show at last here at Whitby.
The 9 mile ground proving to be a very successful area for a better fish or 2.
Jamie Britton joined a mixed crew last week and had a cracking days sport with ling to 13lb and cod to 12lb 14oz.
We have all been waiting for the water to clear here at Whitby and it sure has now, but strangely enough most of the fish caught this day was on the bait. Mainly the baited hokkai traces.
No rules in this game even when the clarity is like Gin!!
Jamie is pictured with his best cod of 12lb 14oz.
Tight lines

Reasonable day fishing with a variety of species including Pollack, Scad, Pout and Mackerel even mackerel 4 ins long weighing less than 1/2 oz (returned to grow a bit) haven't seen them that small for a while so good bait fish must mean the bigger species are about. still waiting to see the first Bass of the season.
