Nothing to report directly from the sea today lads but I just thought I'd show you the finished product with the Thai fish cakes I keep going on about !!
View Boats Page
The concocter of this recipe did say that these babies are best done with ling, mainly because ling is a much stronger ( flesh ) than the other white fish to use, and holds the fish cakes together better. He is completely right !!
Tried them today and what a result !! ( The dipping sauce is to die for !! )
If any of you ever get a few ling whilst fishing with me and are unsure how to fillet them, please don't be afraid to ask me to do them for you. I will do gladly.
Tight lines

Today we managed to get amoung some nice fish. The day started with virtually no wind at all and stayed flat all day!

The biggest of the day was caught right at the end of the day on the last drop, luckily it took the daily prize for the biggest Cod in the uptide festival we're currently running here at Whitby.
Neil Dronsfield took the beauty which weighed in at 11lb after a faily hard day at sea, with bites being hard to come by. His pal Andy officer had been leading all day with another fine Cod of 9lb 9oz caught first thing this morning.
Andy also managed a respectable Ling of 8lb 8oz. The lads managed around 20 to 30 Cod today which was quite slow. Even so, the lads from Hull enjoyed their day out with us again.
We also saw our first Lesser Spotted Dogfish onboard Mistress today, we dont get many up here in Whitby so it was a welcome sight, and also puts the Mistress species count up another notch to 20!
Pictured is todays biggest fish of 11lb with its captor Neil Dronsfield, which won the lucky lad £50 for his efforts, well done mate

Fishing Report by Scott Belbin
on Lady Grace (Brightlingsea, Essex)

Report on-board Lady Grace
Well Saturday I let Scott take Lady Grace out for a short fishing trip in the River with 5 expert fishermen aboard, including Russell. I went along for the ride as I couldn't have Scott catching the first codling of the season aboard Lady Grace without me on there. We headed out for the first of the ebb where we set up anchor and caught alot of nice sized whiting through the day waiting eagerly for a codling but Mr Cod didn't show so Scott decided to have a move for the last hour and a half to try his luck on another mark. This second mark also produced a few whiting before the tide died off and we headed in. Sunday morning came and it was my turn to be skipper and I was determined to catch a codling today, as we headed out I told my fishing party that although it wasn't a competition between Scott and I, I would be deeply let down by them if we didn't catch a codling today and that they would have to swim back. We anchored up on the edge for the last of the flood and the first of the ebb where we proceeded to catch whiting in mixed sizes, not quite as big as the day before but still good fun for those that hadn't been fishing before. Just as I was contemplating moving down into the deeper water one of the lads had a decent bite which when he hooked into it, I knew it had to be a codling the way it was nodding so immediately got the net ready so we didn't have any chances of loosing it and success - we had our first 2lb codling of the season aboard Lady Grace with me as skipper. I had beat the old man! The sweet smell of success. Just as we all checked and rebaited our rods the seal popped his head up and swam round the boat and the tide had died a little so we didnt seem to get many bites so I headed off to my deeper mark where we anchored up for the last couple of hours. We caught more whiting and just on our last cast I had a lovely dab which I offered to the men to take home for their dinner which they did. So we had a second last cast before heading home joyously knowing we had beaten Scott with his experienced anglers the day before. To be fair, there was a fair jump in the height of tide which may have had something to do with it but we wont admit this to Scott, we will say it was pure skill on my part.

Sunday 11th November 2012 -Gaunt Trophy -
View Boats Page
Today we had a group of guys on the boat, fishing for the chance to win the Gaunt Trophy. Fishing was quiet for the first hour until a few codling began to show around the 2lb mark. As the day progressed the fishing improved with some bigger cod showing up to 3lb 8oz. With the trophy being passed back and forth around the boat all day when somebody caught a bigger fish, jags decided to blow everybodys hopes and hooked and landed and lovely Cod that weighed in at 7lb 1oz. With this in the bag everybody began fishing hoping for an even bigger fish but that wasnt to happen and Jags ended up taking the Gaunt Trophy and 2nd Place in the Catagory of Most fish, which was won by Nathan.
Great Bunch of Lads.

Todays trip was mainly a large group with a few individuals added. Fishing was quiet at first until the first Cod of the day was pulled aboard by Mike who normally beach fishes. It was a lovely fish that weighed in at 3lb. Some of the other guys on the boat hooked and landed some more cod around the 2-2.5lb mark. Plenty of decent sized whiting again. Best cod of the day was one that Mike caught weighing in at 4lb. Total fish. 9 Cod and plenty of whiting. A decent sized Thornback was lost at the back of the boat in the process of netting it. Estimated around the 7lb mark. Plenty of Dabs aswell.
Good day was had by all.

Today saw us briging some new and old faces back out aboard Discovery. We set off up the river and began fishing. The anglers who had been out before began fishing while the new faces amongst us were given a demonstration on bait and the rods/reels etc. It didnt take long for Fiona to catch the first Cod of the day weighing in at just under 2lb. H who was fishing at the front began pulling in some nice sized whiting untill he had his first cod of the day at 3lb, closely follwed by another of 2lb 6oz.
Plenty more Cod were pulled aboard with until Robbie who was fishing from a boat for the first time decided to hook into a lovely Cod that gave him a good fight right the way to the surface. It wasnt until we were unhooking the fish that we noticed another rig was hanging from the side of the cods mouth. The fish weighed in at 7lb 9oz. Daz was looking at the rig when he noticed that the rig was similar to the one that Nick who was fishing with us on wednesday used. So comparing the rigs that Nick had left with us and this rig showed that they were infact identical, the knots were the same, swivels hooks and the lenght. This may well have been the fish that Nick lost on wednesday and we hooked and landed it 2miles further down the river 2 days later. But credit to Robbie for landing such a lovely fish on his first time boat fishing. Total fish for the day was 13 cod to 7lb 9 oz with plenty of whiting and dabs.
A superb day fishings

Best cod of the day was 3lb 8oz. Plenty of big whiting best being 1lb 8oz.

Today we had a mixed bag of anglers aboard. Some formed small groups others were individuals. We did however have Nick from our sponsors Diawa out with us today along with Shaun and Renee from Foxons tackle in St Asaph North Wales and Malcolm who works for Rovex Masterline. The fishing began well with Renee hooking and landing a lovely 6lb 9oz cod within the first half an hour of fishing. As the fishing went on throughout the day plenty of cod were being pulled in. Nick managed to hook into a lovely fish but his line snapped above the rig so we didnt get to see the fish. A few thornbacks were also landed to go with the hundreds of whiting that we boated. Total for the day. 11 cod to 6lb 9 oz, Thornbacks to 5lb, Dabs and over 150+ Whiting.
A cracking day with a good bunch of anglers
