Baitbox Humber Cod Open 2012 (Predator Gets 1st and 2nd place and several other prices
262 anglers from around the UK and beyond descended upon Grimsby to fish the Baitbox Big Cod Open Boat Competition in glorious conditions. They enjoyed what turned out to be a day to remember.
A total of 94 private and charter boats put to sea from the Cleethorpes beach and Grimsby marina to fish the massive event in the Humber estuary, and organised by the angling section of Humberside Cruising Baitbox Humber Cod Open 2012Association. The fishing action in this ‘heaviest single fish' event was superb, and, incredibly, a double-figure cod was required to break into the top 20!
Boats efficiently put to sea from the harbour and beach on an ideal calm and sunbathed morning. An impressive racing start saw the mass of boats heading off in the direction of the popular river marks. At lines down most were anchored in the Grimsby Middle area, situated between the two main shipping lanes… and it wasn’t long before the first fish were boated.
    THE GREAT UNWASHED SQUID BAIT
Most anglers opted to target cod on 6/0 pennel rigs baited with the highly rated Baitbox Unwashed Squid. The water here is the colour of melted chocolate, and this is definitely not a venue for hopping shads. Casting baits uptide proved most effective, although baits either trotted or cast downtide did also take good fish.
Charter boat ‘Predator’, skippered by Craig Moore had an exceptional day. First Charlie Holden hooked and landed a cracking cod of 15lb 9oz, which tested both his tackle and nerve to the limit. But before Charlie’s fish was safely in the net, Dave Proudfoot’s rod sprung back as another hefty fish found the squid bait. Dave also experienced a few heart-stopping moments, knitting in and out of other lines before his bloater 16lb 10oz cod smacked onto the deck. And the big fish action didn’t end there as Matt Netherton pitched in with a fish over 10lb before the ebb tide fell to slack water.
WHO WOULD BE HUMBER COD KING?
The air waves were thick with news of good fishing a big cod from marks spattered all over the Humber, and the weigh in was sure to be busy. Loads of good cod were presented at the scales and there was much debate as to the identity of the eventual winner at the close. Dave Proudfoot’s 16lb 10oz beast sat top of the pile, with Charlie Holden second on 15lb 9oz and Bob Mogg third in the money stakes with another fabulous fish of 14lb 9oz. £3000 in cash was paid out to the top three rods, while an impressive supporting prize table saw anglers down to 40th place well rewarded for their efforts.
All cod landed was sold at market. The money raised, together with donations from anglers totalled almost £1600. This figure will be matched by a local benefactor and presented to ‘Children with Cancer UK’. Sponsors Baitbox and Cryotech are to be congratulated for supporting this tremendous event.

Great days wreck fishing with Neil, there was constant rod bending action from start to finish. Neil had great knowledge of the local area and was excellent at postioning the boat accurately over the wreck every time.
This is the best experience we have ever had on a Charter Boat and would highly recommend the Queens Ferry to anyone else.
Our 5 hour trip consited of- 36 Cod, a good handful in double figures. All caught on single hooks and with only 4 anglers. We had a cod on the boat with every drift over the wreck and on more then one occasion we had multiple hook-ups. Neil has found wrecks that other charter boats are unaware of and he alternates from each one to avoid over fishing. They were only a short travel away from port and not much time was wasted in getting into fishing.
All tackle was provided and Neil charges only 5 pounds an hour, the rods and reels were new and upto date. not like the old stiff poker rods and old fashioned scarborough reels. nice multiplier reels and fast action boat rods provided enabling us to get the most out of the fish and their fight.
Neil gutted alot of the fish for us and was always on hand with the gaff

  • 04/2012 Fishing Report by Lyle Stantiford on Supanova II (Weymouth, Dorset)

    Apr 2012 by Lyle Stantiford

    Report on-board Supanova II

Well what a bleak couple of weeks it has been with the weather!! We did manage to scrape a day earlier this week where yet again the Turbot fishing proved magical with 3 of the 5 lads on board catching PB's. Firstly Ian Robson bagged a PB of 9lb 8oz, Ian has been fishing since my very first season in action in Weymouth and has been a constant pleasure to have on board and i'm chuffed that he was rewarded with a lovely fish.

Second to break his PB was sparrow, sparrow is fairly new to flatfish fishing and only started venturing out this year but already he has managed to land Brill to 6lb, Plaice to 4lb and now a cracking Turbot of 12lb.

Last but no means least was Paul Norman form Essex, some of you may recognise Paul from his own Charter Boat TRYA running out of Walton on the Naze. Paul managed to land a cracker of 14lb 8oz (pictured) but unfortunately lost a better fish that I can honestly say may have broken the boat record of 22lb 4oz but unfortunately it wasn't to be!

Never mind back to the decorating for me now!

Looks good for friday and Saturday for a bit of wrecking for the Cod so fingers crossed! Due off on the first run to the channel islands next week so fingers crossed the weather lets us.

Once again many thanks to all who continue to venture to Weymouth and support the port. Tight lines if you are soon to be wetting a line.

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

When the weather finally broke last Friday here at Whitby the Spring angling competition got under way properly.
Over the weekend we worked a couple of wrecks on the 9 mile area along with some rough ground. The wrecks providing us with some fantastic fishing with cod to just short of 11 lbs.
Upto press we've managed 7 daily cash prizes in the competition ( more than any other boat ) so things are looking good for the Shy-Torque anglers!
Pictured is Nigel Hall from Richmond North Yorkshire with what we thought was going to be the winning fish when he was reeling in. Turned out to be a lovely treble of cod weighing over 21 lbs.The best one in this treble weighing 9lb 13.5oz getting him a daily cash prize. Lucky but unlucky Nige!!!
