    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

Today it was finally time to break out the Factor 50!! We have had barely a breath of wind and fantastic sunshine all day.

With settled weather this week, Tuesday and Wednesday saw us spend most of the days drifting rough ground and a wreck or two at slack water with the Spring 5m tides. The fishing wasn’t exceptional by any standards, with mainly small fish landed, but plenty of bites to the baited Hokkai’s. There are lots of Haddock being caught at the moment, we caught more Haddock on Wednesday, than I had the entire year, last year.

Today we were back into the 4m tide range, so we ran off to some wrecks in the 20 mile stream. First wreck saw some solid fishing for three hours. Most drifts we took 3-5 fish mainly Codling with an odd Ling. They were lovely clean fish mostly in the 3-5lb bracket. Shaun Marchington taking the biggest Codling at just over 7lb. Shads did a few bites initially, but Muppet Bait Traces, baited with a whole squid were really doing the business.

Once the tide fell away towards slack water, we moved on as the bites dried up. The next wreck marked really well on the echo sounder, but we got nothing but small Haddock and a few Codling.
After an hour and with the Ebb Tide away properly, we moved on.

The last wreck we fished wasn’t bad considering the drift speed was 1.2 knots. Some beautiful clean Codling to 5lb for everyone to finish the day.

The weather was fantastic today and the company on board were the same. It’s the most enjoyable day out I’ve had for a while. Plenty of fish caught in fantastic company. Well done everyone.

  • 09/05/2023 Fishing Report by Scott Belbin on Galloper (Brightlingsea, Essex)

9 May 2023 by Scott Belbin

    Report on-board Galloper

We had a very pleasant trip offshore the other day. With bright sunshine and no wind we headed for the horizon with lots of options depending on the conditions. We decided to give it a go for plaice as I felt conditions suited them and we had explored other options in previous trips. Several of the lads hadn't caught them before so we scrapped together some traces and gave it a go to see what was showing. The first drift showed signs of life with a nice plaice for Chris early on as well as several missed bites. Over the next few drifts we refined our rigs, the lads tuned into the bites and I smartened up our drifts. It was great to see some of the lads like Chris, Mick and Nick getting into this way of fishing. They may have never fished like this before but they were still catching a steady stream of fish with several double shots coming out. To be honest they were out fishing some of the more experienced lads at first! After the tide turned the fishing seemed to turn up a notch and by now everybody was catching. Wayne had a pretty little tub gurnard and there was a good number of dabs thrown in too. Not that we were complaining but dogfish were noticeable in there absence. Only around 6 came out all day. The lads kept 20 odd plaice for the pot and let as many again go. I must admit I thought there might be a few but it was as good as I've seen for Essex plaice fishing in years. Of course we would have liked to have seen more but around 40 plaice for the day as well as the other species made for a very pleasant trip.
If you fancy joining us for some plaice and bass fishing in the coming months please get in touch and I will add you to my mailing list.

  • 07/05/2023 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

7 May 2023 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

    7.05.23

With the lads all boarded for 6.45am yesterday we took the 7.0am bridge and headed out.

We’d had a quick conflab pre sailing to discuss our options.

The tides at present are running swift at 5.4m so the lads ended up voting for the offshore option as I figured the inshore marks would be tough going.
We ran to the grounds at the back of the 20 mile stream. The fishing started out a bit slow to be fair but after an hour or so they started to come on the feed nicely.

Four or five out of the group took a good half dozen fish with Cod to just over 9lb.
A nice stamp of good fresh run Cod for the table.
Unlike our last few trips where the better quality fish came up on the baited rigs, todays better fish came up on the artificials, Shads, Sidewinders etc.

Daryll, Pete and young Fergus taking the best 3 Cod at 9lb 2oz, 8lb 12oz and 10lb dead.

Tally for the day, around 40 odd keepers and a good number of “chuck backs”

Because Fergus works as crew, he can’t enter the monthly heaviest fish of the month competition on the boat where we’re giving a free trip away each month!! He was a few ounces short anyway!
Henry from Leeds still leads this months with a Cod just over 10lbs.

All in all a great day at sea with smashing company. Shame it was pea soup fog all day but you can’t have it all eh!

Cheers for now and keep a tight line.

  • 28/04/2023 Fishing Report by Rich Cope on Mistress (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

28 Apr 2023 by Rich Cope

    Report on-board Mistress

    Morning guys, weekends here again!

Had a great run to the offshore wrecks again yesterday with the favourable forecast., we'd had a huge northerly blow this week which has kept the water coloured inshore meaning we couldnt hit the marks we should be doing by now.

I gave Andy and the lads the options and they chose to have a run off. I explained id never hit these marks before and had a clear route planned, unfortunately I only got 3 marks into my 8 mark day

On our 3rd wreck of the day, we kept nailing fish after fish every drift, the shads were on fire, I fished my favorite 4" white koike awol and never missed a drift hitting fish as soon as I hit bottom
The rest of the lads used a mixture of squid and shads to nail the rest of the fish.

What I was amazed at, was the quality of the fish, every cod was between 3lb and 6lb, we had a good smattering of fish 6lb to 7lb and the best of the day went around 9lb

Another great day in great company, with us being so far off, it gave me chance to fillet everyones catch on the way in too.

If you fancy a day out with me, give me a call on 07977 436 903, if you cant get hold of me please give me a text or WhatsApp and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

    Tight lines Rich

  • 03/05/2023 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

3 May 2023 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

A day of two halves for yesterday’s crew on the Shy-Torque III

We started out on the ground we fished well last Saturday for very little. A handful of Codling, three Haddock, Whiting and Pouting.
Perseverance there didn’t pay off so we moved offshore to a wreck I didn’t think had been touched in a while.

A good move for us as there was plenty of action for the lads.

Our Chinese contingent from Leeds, Alan,Joe,Tony and the two Henry’s having a good steady day on the Cod and Ling.
Best fish between those five, a lovely Cod just over 10lb caught by Henry #1.
Bob Ellis managing a dozen for himself too with Cod to 7lb 12oz.
Alan Sutcliffe bagged himself 10 nice fish too (Thanks again for the roofing felt mate!)

All in all a great day out with plenty of fish to take for each and everyone.

Henry’s Cod currently leading the May “fish of the month” on the boat where the heaviest fish boated wins a free trip.

Cheers for now and good fishing wherever you are.

    Cheers
    Rich

    Report on-board Galloper

Spaces this week aboard Galloper from Essex.
We continue to see some nice rays aboard the Galloper. Not as many as we used to expect but enough to put a bend in the rod between the other fish. The numbers of bass are increasing each week. Boyd Rees had a lovely bass to start his trip off. Followed shortly after by a nice smooth-hound for Pete. There are a few more better hounds showing now and I look forward to getting among them in the coming weeks. In between there are lots of dogs and whiting to keep us busy too.

  • 02/05/2023 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

2 May 2023 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

Nick Massingham and the boys had the boat booked for the day today. It was a decent wrecking tide and they all love fishing the wrecks, so that was how we spent the day.

With the water still not clear on the inshore wrecks, we had to run off to get to the clear water. The first thing I noticed was that it was much clearer than I’d seen it all year, when we got out there. The first wreck we stopped at, gave us a couple of hours of steady fishing. We took 2-4 fish every drift and most were in the 3-5lb bracket. Everyone got themselves a few in the box, with the exception of trip organiser Nick! For some reason, he had a very slow start, but little did we know what the “Cod Gods” had in store for him!!

We decided to move on a few miles and arrived at our next wreck about 90 minutes before slack water. A pod of dolphins greeted us and kept swimming round the boat as we set up the first drift. It was brilliant to see them swimming close around us. First drift and nobody had a bite, so I thought it might have been a wrong move. After setting up the second drift, it all went a bit mental. There were fish coming up left right and centre. Almost all were good sized quality Codling. Most were 4lb+ and we had half a dozen most runs through.

It was wind against tide so we tiptoed very slowly through the wreck, which was a massive help. Nick Massingham had by now joined the party and was clumping them every run through. Then I saw him lift into what looked like the wreck, but it bounced back……fish on! Fishing with a two muppet bait trace, Nick thought he might have a double shot as he really struggled to winch up his prize. As it turned out, he was wrong, as I slipped the net under a new PB Cod of 15lb 8oz! Credit to Nick, a fish of that size isn’t going to be the best to eat, so after the pictures, it was slipped back for another angler to catch another day.

Squid baited, muppet bait traces, did the damage today. No shock there!

We fished away for the remainder of the day and by the end, the lads were throwing them all back as they were more than happy with what was already in the boxes.
