    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

Here is a short report on our wrecking trip Wednesday and Thursday. As I said in my previous post the tides and weather were perfect for some winter wrecking.

As the water was reasonably clear around 5 miles into our journey I decided to try a few favorites 8 and 10 mile to the east of Whitby.

This tuned out to be a bad choice, the first wreck produced nothing and I should have changed my plan. Looking back now it's easy to say that.

Still I pressed on further east to another favorite which can often produce some good pollock after plenty of drifts and only one pollock (albeit a cracker) we had to admit defeat and made the long journey back north west to the 9 mile ground and this was absolute rubbish as well.

There are a couple of wrecks in that vicinity but my good Friend killer was sat on the best one most of the day and after a call on the radio I realised any fish that were in the area were probably on that one wreck.

I tried all the others with just the odd ling and the usual poutings we covered lots of miles that day for nothing and I really felt for the lads as the other two boats had done really well we discovered when we got back.

so I decided the next day I would push off to the distant wrecks around 20 miles from Whitby. With only two anglers showing interest both forum members (woody and Arkle) two did ring late on Wednesday but never showed what a mistake they made.

Woody invited his dad to join us so now there were four including me and as I don't often get a chance to fish  I decided to take the chance and have a days sport myself.

We set off early to gain a bit of help from the tide and we made good time full of anticipation I headed to the first wreck and hoped we could re produce that marvelous day in the Autumn when we badged up on the first wreck.

Just before we arrived around a mile away I heard another boat behind us I knew this was Paul Eddon's boat (trot-on) as we spoke the night before and discussed our plans he got to the wreck first by one drift as I set the boat up he called me on the radio and said all the rods were in.

Brilliant stuff our first drift all four of us were into cod as well and this went on drift after drift we caught every time.

The only time we missed was the odd time we got stuck in the wreck most of the cod were caught on squid around 4lb to 6lb with a good sprinkling of 8lb to 10lbers. I think the best one went 12lb.

What a cracking day and by the time I decided to headed back I was totally knackered we hadn't stopped for three hours solid no time for tea or food when the fishing is that good!

I put the auto pilot on and just sat back for 15mins before contemplating all that filleting enough fish for the family now until spring

  • 28/12/2010 Fishing Report by Mark Hutchings on Jay Jay (Ilfracombe, Devon)

28 Dec 2010 by Mark Hutchings

    Report on-board Jay Jay

A group of locals braved the recent cold weather to fish the 28th December for the spurs. We had about a dozen over the high water on a 5 hour trip. To add to this we also had some nice whitting, a few bull huss and a couple of nice eels, the biggest falling to James Gubb which was estimated at about 20-25lbs. All in all not a bad outing for a short trip over the tide. We are currently running these shorter trips over the most productive fishing times. For a price and bookings call Dave on 01271 863398 or email: info@bristolchannelcharters.co.uk

  • 21/12/2010 Fishing Report by Ray Martin on PLAN B (Southend-On-Sea, Essex)

21 Dec 2010 by Ray Martin

    Report on-board PLAN B

December has been a tough month. The snow and spratts in the river have just about killed it at the moment.. We have had to scale down and try for the less targetted species such as Dabs.
I will start looking for skate next month and hopefully the cod will return to normal feeding when the spratts disappear. Best bait to use at the moment is black lug - the older and smellier the better.. don't know why but the Dabs love it...

  • 12/2010 Fishing Report by Lyle Stantiford on Supanova II (Weymouth, Dorset)

    Dec 2010 by Lyle Stantiford

    Report on-board Supanova II

Well my first year in the Chartering world is nearly over!! What a cracking year it has been too!

A massive thanks to all who ventured out on Supanova this year, I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I have.
Those of you who didn't come on board this year but ventured out on other boats from Weymouth, a massive thanks must go to you also for supporting the town.

The fishing over the last few weeks has been frantic but unfortunately very few boats have ventured out to brave it. Those that have managed to get their lads down through the snow and out fishing have seen some cracking catches of whiting with the numbers in their hundreds, a few christmas bonus bass still lurking around and already showing are the winter Pollack on the wrecks!!

Fingers crossed fo an exciting 2011.

Merry Christmas and a fishy New Year.

    Lyle
