Fishing Report by Dave Builth
on Upholder (Amble, Northumberland)
May 2010 by Dave Builth
Report on-board Upholder
Fishing was poor in April mainly due to the water being dirty with an abundance of algae, on the occasions the water did clear, there were a few Codlings caught.
View Boats Page
The very first Codling was caught by Dennis Miller on the 13th of April weighting around 2lb and would have been returned but was damaged when it was deep hooked on prawns and Squid.
Colin Chandler had 3 or 4 small codlings to keep on the same trip.
As usual with April fishing, if the weather is settled the first of the Codlings normally show at the back end of the month. On the 24th of April a party of six anglers from Carlisle had 16 codlings to keep with quite a few small size codlings being returned, they also had wrasse, pouting and a few coalies for a bit of sport.
The best day in April was the 29th when six anglers had 30 codlings to keep between them,
The best fish of 9lb was caught by Jim Tate on lug worm, when the fish was gutted it had one of the other anglers Lee Builtcliffe’s hook baited with peeler crab in its stomach, A little disappointing but Lee still manage to go away with 6 decent codlings to keep between 3lb to 5lb.
May,
No boats went anywhere from Amble the first two weekends in May due to the Northerly winds. With snow still lying on the Cheviot and a frost all over the Northeast the first trip out in May was the 12th.
The six anglers that were out managed to catch on average 8 to 9 codlings to keep apiece all between
3lb to 5lb with all the smaller fish being returned.
The best bait being fresh dug lug worm also prawns and squid fished on daylights and hokkis.
With the weather forecast looking good for the weekend there should be some decent catches to report for the second half of May. -

Report on-board Razorbill 3
It was good to see that the weather was on the change, The wind has been stuck in the N East for two weeks, We can still get out but it restricts where you can go it's just as well that we can still get some good fishing close inshore,
View Boats Page
The day started with the wind in the N East about 3/4 and by the end of the day it was in a warmer South and decreased,The fishing was not fast but steady with 18 THORNBACKS to 8 1/2lb around 25 SMOOTHHOUNDS but they were all small ( i would think that the bigger ones are just offshore) and about a MILLION DOGFISH, Well maby not a million but more than enough, It kept the anglers busy all day. -

Report on-board Supanova II
Well guys since the last report allot has been going on in Weymouth! The plaice season has pretty much been and gone with mixed results. But some nice fish did turn up along the way. The wreck fishing has continued with some fantastic sport with the first few cod of the year and first bass of the year. The pollack action has continued steadily along with the occasional ling. The inshore fishing has seen the arrival of the mackerell which has meant some nice fresh bait for the hunting of the prized turbot which have prooved more than obliging over the last few days. Fingers crossed that the action will continue over the coming months and thank you to all who continue to support me and Supanova in her first season in operation, and also to supporting Weymouth. We skippers to understand that times are a little hard but apreciate everybody that comes to the town.

set off at about 7.30 just cleared the peirs and straight into a shower of large hailstones that actually hurt when they hit you.
turned south the sea had a bit of northerly roll on but not to bad once the hailstones passed. twenty minutes to the first wreck.
down went the rods. first off a cod of about 4lbs to a chrome jigger an one pouting to bait [suid]
around again 2 ling again on squid 4/5 lbs each. nothing next 2 drifts. away to next wreck. simalar pattern but a fish or 2 every drift with cod to 8lbs an ling to 9lbs. the next wreck was the same steady a fish or so each drift.
fishing was steady away until after dinner when the tide changed an the drift speeded up and only occasional fish being taken. for about 2 hrs
but later the wind eased [an warmed up] and the fish came on again.
so all in all a reasonable day with about 45 fish mainly in th 4-6lbs range -

went to a mark on the maplin sands and caught skate sporadically during the day, the anglers mostly freshwater carp men all managed at least a skate each, best fish was an 11lb skate with about 10-15 being released to fight another day.
A few doggies and a couple on tiny hounds made the total haul, but considering the weather and lack of experience a good days fishing was had by all.

Big tides this weekend it’s to early for Bassing so it saw us ground fishing for Roker and cod. A good couple of days fishing really, Sat we ended up with 13 Roker to 11lb 8oz and 10 cod all within the 4- 8lb bracket. Sunday brought us much the same with 17 Roker to 9lb and 6 Cod, again fish of the 4-8lb stamp.
THURS 22nd APRIL
Another Offshore wrecking trip unfortunately not as good as couple of weeks ago. We have been hit with a bad case of May weed or ‘ Baccy weed:’ as it is known this colours the water up and makes fishing a lot harder . Never the less after much hard work and travelling we managed to find clearer water and a wreck which held some fish we landed over 30 cod no big uns but not a bad day all in all.
SAT 24TH APRIL
Due to Thurs wrecking trip not being as productive as we had hoped, we decided to bottom fish again today. It proved to be the right choice with an excellent day had by all. In total we landed nearly 40 cod to 12lb 8oz with another five low doubles thrown in. The size of the fish today was superb with the rest of the fish all being in 6-9lb range. Lets hope this fishing and weather stays with us for another week or two!
Our offshore bassing trips will be starting soon once the baccy weed has cleared. Still plenty of mid week trips available so get in contact if you fancy a trip.
