Fishing Report by Les Jones
on White Maiden II (Lymington, Hampshire)

Report on-board White Maiden II
As our weather continues to be dominated by a high pressure system, cold at night and still/bright at day, the fishing is a bit ‘slow’ all round, unless you are looking for dogs! The first Black Bream are making a show now. These early Bream, potentially the biggest of the season, are difficult to catch in the murky waters, but they are there, as the Geoff Wheeler crew minus Geoff (laid up with a bad back) caught our first of the season. Tom on the left is showing the returned hen fish. However, the fishing was slow and a move only found more dogs. The water is still down at 10 degrees. On Sunday one boat landed more than nine Bream all good fish, so they are there.

On Saturday, unfortunately, White Maiden didn’t catch a Bream but found a couple of Edible crabs, a small Bull Huss, inevitable dogs and Pout plus a few Wrasse, for the Steve Forster crew. The day was very calm and quiet apart from a cold breeze for an hour on the change of tide.
Wight Rebel of Lymington, fishing near to White Maiden, caught two good Bream and lost two, one thought to be a very big Bream. The other boats in the vicinity that did connect, found one or two fish, around the 3lb mark.
The sea is gradually warming up but is cold still, too cold, maybe? Hounds are deep and falling to squid as they do this time of year. Some Rays are being caught on the banks with Blondes, Small Eyeds and Thornbacks showing. Pollock are being caught well out on the mid-channel wrecks. Kevin Duell, out from Lymington, on Voyager, found 48 for his crew last week to 15lb.
On Saturday, inshore, Steve Davies fishing solo on ‘Agay’, baited worm to a size 2 and struck into what he thought to be a decent Hound (Smoothie). After carefully coaxing the nodder to the surface, after more than 10 minutes, through the 50’ of water he was in, he netted a Cod of 13lb. Maybe we should be fishing for them still!
Good fish! Above is Richard Burgoyne with a cracking 21.5lb Spur caught two weeks ago now. White Maiden is the white mark near his thumb!UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD White Maiden II

Fishing Report by Sam Cumming
on Silver Spray II (Poole, Dorset)

Report on-board Silver Spray II
The banks fishing off Poole has continued to be excellent with good catches of blonde rays and spurdogs. There have also been some nice cod and congers in the mix as well. Over the last weekend James Howarth from Christchurch decided to have a trip afloat instead of his usual carp fishing. He managed 2 spurs the best of which was weighed at 20lb before being returned alive. This fish was very close to the Wessex record fish of 20lb 7oz which we caught on the same mark last year. James mate Tristan added a 12lb cod so that there was something for supper! Our best blonde ray this month was a 24lb caught by Greg David from Wantage.
View Boats Page
When the weather has permitted we have ventured up to 40 miles offshore to fish on the wrecks. There have been good numbers of Pollack caught on artificial lures. Dave Faulker had a cracking fish of 17lb 8oz on a blue sidewinder. He followed it up with a 13lber on the next drift! Kelvin Hindmarch from Overton had a great ling of 29lb on a wreck 20 miles to the SW of Poole. We have only just found this one and it has tremendous potential for congers which seem to be everywhere on the ground around the wreckage. The best congers this month have reached the 50lb mark but there are bigger ones to come.
The first bream have been reported and numbers are expected to increase with the warmer weather. We are also expecting the turbot fishing to take off soon.

Our first Pollock of the season were caught. A successful trip landing 20 Pollock biggest fell to Stevie at 11lb 8oz with another couple pushing 9lb also being caught. Most fish fell to sidewinder lures and jellyworms. No big cod as yet on the wrecks biggest on the day was 8lb but plenty were caught. As the month progresses we should see the clearer water pushing closer in to us, and hopefully some better cod thrown in as well. -

Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl
On Friday and Saturday I decided to steam off to distant grounds as the inshore fishing was poor of late also the weather was perfect flat sea and blue sky both days, Friday I had Karl from Pickering with a small group who chartered the entire boat and I explained the inshore fishing situation they agreed the only realistic chance of getting in the prizes was to try some distant ground and wrecks to the east and at the limit of my licence range, after an epic journey and a few stops at some unknown wrecks which produced the odd fish we arrived and the fishing was much better than recent inshore trips but nothing of any size we had around 15 or 20 fish cod to around 7lb pollock to 4lb and some large whitings around 2lb mark we only had a few hours fishing and had to head for home,
View Boats Page
Saturdays anglers Clinton and Chris from chesterfield were told the same story and they also agreed a steam was the sensible option this time I diced ed to work a few wrecks north around 18mls away and this time as soon as we arrived all the rods were in which gave everyone a smile after the long but sunny steam the day produced around the same 20 fish or so with cod the most common after a change of tide the fish stopped feeding so I headed for some wrecks around 12mls off which produced nothing neither did the 9 mile ground so all in all not a bad two days in the present scheme of things roll on summerUPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl

Fishing on Duke IV now much improved with the arrival of the summer species. This along with the spring run of Cod and Thornbacks we are keeping the angler’s busy! Also being caught are some quality Whiting and Dabs!
Smoothounds and Bass, although mostly small are here and feeding so by moving about we can have a good mixed bag of fish!
Some large Bass being landed in the nets, it would appear that these fish are travelling so not interested in our baits, mores the pity!
The Cod will be moving off to the wrecks by the end of the month to join the Pollack that will be there already. Shads, Redgills and jellyworms are the way to fish the wrecks here off Ramsgate with Hokkies and pirks on the banks.
A Ramsgate restaurant was recently offering local caught Halibut steaks, getting ready to report them to trading standards under the Bulldung heading I was surprised to find that a local netting boat actually landed the fish, weighing 65lb just three miles out from the harbour, this same boat has also landed some good Turbot and Brill, so they are here, just got to get em on rod&line!

On the banks the fishing has continued to be excellent on the neap tides with plenty of blonde rays, congers and big spurdogs. We have also had some bonus pollack, cod and bass to go with the main catch. Sky sports have made a film of our banks fishing and you can see this soon on Tight Lines which is broadcast on Friday evenings. While presenter Andy Ford and the film crew were aboard we had cod to 15lb, congers to 35lb and 10 spurdogs all in double figures. It will be shown on Tight lines Friday 9th April at 18.30 on Sky Sports 2
The plaice have started to appear on the Shambles and the best was a lovely fish of 4lb 8oz which fell to Bournemouth angler Dave Jensen. Turbot have been slow which is perhaps linked to the shortage of sandeels. We managed 1 eel in 2 20 minute tows. The water seems to be too cold and the eels are still buried in the sand. On the offshore wrecks we have found a few Pollack to 14lb and congers to 50lb.
We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the bream in April together with the turbot on the banks and increasing numbers of Pollack and cod on the offshore wrecks.
