    Report on-board Galloper

May was yet another busy month aboard the ‘Galloper’. The weather wasn’t always fantastic but we managed to get all of our trips in making the most of the shelter the area around west Mersea has to offer. Even on the days when the weather was a disappointment the sport made up for it with the varied and productive fishing we have to offer at this time of year. Our main target species through out may were the thornback rays. these are around in great numbers due to successful management over the past few years which is great to see. They average 4-8lbs with double figure fish common place now a days and with average days of 20-40 on the boat they are great to have around. Our best trip last month was 68 to toms party who were a group of hire rods who were very pleased with their day. these fish are often over looked in favour of cod or bass but on light gear, in our shallow waters without too much tide they can put up a great scrap along with the odd male being kept for a tasty feed. We have seen a few bass mixed in on trips and a couple of trips with a few more numbers of them. These fish will show through out the summer in various numbers and never fail to put a smile on an anglers face. There are still the odd cod showing here and there as the last stragglers often hang around after a good season. Many of these are nice fish too with lots of trips picking up one or two fish around the 3-4lbs mark still. The smooth-hounds have been around for a while now but have come on the feed a bit more over the last couple of weeks. we’ve seen some lovely fish coming out with several doubles mixed in. these handsome sport fish are all returned but put up a fantastic fight particularly when hooked in very shallow water. It was nice to see one of our regulars beat his PB the other day and catch a new record for the ‘Galloper’. Joe has fished with us since a very young age and smashed his old PB of 16lbs with a lovely fish of 21lbs! this was a big fish too as she had no pubs in her at the time I would have loved to have seen her come aboard in full pup. We had an early try for tope the other day with no joy but things are a little behind what we have become accustomed to over the last few years. We will have a go again at the first chance we get and I’m sure we’ll find something with a few mackerel starting to show to provide us with fresh bait.

  • 31/05/2015 Fishing Report by TERRY BATT on Vanishing Point-2 (Bradwell Marina, Essex)

31 May 2015 by TERRY BATT

    Report on-board Vanishing Point-2

    Hi everyone,
well since last we spoke, we went to sea on Friday 29th, yeah I know, 30 mph Westerly, gusting 45 mph, and we were Tope fishing, alas we didn't get any Tope runs but conditions were far from ideal, but the three guys that had vanishing Point booked knew that before we set sail, and still wanted to give it a go..!! hard old bunch.

Well we knew the boat could take it, if the anglers could, and they did...!! after a 1 hour steam at just over 20 knots, we arrived at the Tope mark, and dropped the anchor, and to be honest, even with the wind blowing at near gale force 7, we sat at anchor perfectly, for a couple of hours, with the wind and tide together, it was quite doable.

The lads had 3 other rods out for Smoothounds, which readily came to the Hermit crabs we picked up on the way out from our pot, and gave a good account of themselves, and sadly Paul Nichols lost a stunning Bass right under the boat, he kept saying, no..!! there is nothing there, after a ferocious take on his hound rod, then as his line got to the stern on the boat he caught up with it....!! a really big Bass was on the end, and as soon as he tried to tighten the line against the mighty fish, it had other ideas, and ran straight down and under the boat and snapped Paul up on the rudders or props??? but, there it was gone in an instance...

But as I say we stuck at it for 2 hours, then as forecast, a weather front started to move in from the West, and the wind picked up to server gale 9, so we thought it would be a wise move to come it a bit closer and get some lee from a sand bank nearer to home and swap Tope fishing, for Skate fishing, but the rain started, so Paul opted to have an early day, and head for the plough (Pub).

We did offer him some money back for the shortened day, but the gentleman he is, he insisted we kept all the money, and gave Nicola a £20. tip on top...! what a geezer..

Saturday 30th (yesterday) saw the winds die down from Friday, what a different day, a gentle SW breeze and conditions very much better.

So we gave the boys, (who part of a pub crowd of Peter Thaker from Thurrock near Lakeside), a choice, of what type of fishing they wanted to do, so we split the day into two halves, we did Smoothound fishing for the flood tide, and Skate fishing for the ebb tide, and there wasn't loads of hounds caught to be fair, as they are just starting to turn up at the closer marks, but they did get some nice rod benders and a show of things to come.

So with the flood done, we upped anchor, and headed for or Skate mark for the afternoon session, and we were not there long before the first one plopped over the side, then they started coming in at a nice steady pace, not manic like the past few trips, but more than enough to keep everyone happy..!!

Sunday 31st May, the last day of the month, and sadly the weather is forecast once again to hit gale force 8, so with 11 anglers booked on, and mostly novices, it seemed prudent to re-schedule the trip for a later date, but sadly for those guys, as they are restricted to weekends only, we don't have anything until July, people are just loving the new boat and cant get enough...... (me and Nicola are glad to say) but we fully appreciate even with such a fantastic vessel as vanishing Point-2 is..!! it would be nothing without you guys kindly booking it up, and making new adventure with us as a lot of you did over the last 25 years, from our beloved Vicky Emma, to Cacheflow, to Vanishing Point-1, and now to the biggest and best we have ever built the £700,000.00 Vanishing Point-2.

    So Tight lines guys...!!!!!
