Foggy old day with little viz to start down to 20mtrs at times, thought best to fish inside the Roads for safety reasons. Weak tides today and gentle NE, started off with whiting , and more whiting and guess what more whiting! Moved position after slack start of the flood further back up to Corton Church, few flatties thrown in with same old whiting. Few keepers in amongst them, tried our hardest for early cod but still none. Moved out to inshore wreck beaten by prolific weed so finished up back inside by the White Swan. Whiting all day, plenty of sport. Big thanks to Lawrence for organizing the day,Charlie,Luke,Vicky and Jimmy,Lewis,Lee and Toby. Would like to add a personal well done to you all today, very nice to see conservation minded anglers taking couple of fish for the table and returning most, wish people would follow your example sometimes.Pleasure to have you aboard, hope to see you guys soon. All the best. Jon.

Small numbers today on board plenty of room , those who didnt turn up missed cracking weather for this time of year. Headed out to 5 mile bank, plenty of whitting, few spotted dogs still, and flatties. Caught the slack just before the flood started seemed today the fish wanted a bit of tide run to feed. Not to much weed thank god lately been plagued by it. After lunch moved inshore in the Roads further south ,catching decent size whitting on the ebb, no cod for us today, patchy reports of codling, still too warm.Big thanks to our small party today of regulars Ian,Dave,James and from Stoke on holiday Laura and Jamie pictured with few whitting that were kept. Enjoyed the day, hoping the cod will be in soon for us! Jon.

Had a great day on Saturday - weather was perfect .. flat calm seas and non stop fish. The whiting and dog fish were still a nuicance but no where near as many. And COD at last. We lost a good one early on- it was fighting well but sadly escaped. We had another fish lost on the surface a good skate, but then it was better news with a nice lot of cod and skate safely in the net.

First trip for 2weeks been out of water for the yearly wash and scrub up,left at 6.00am to get on the mark for the last 2hrs of the ebb, fish from the start with a nice 7lb rooker plenty of yting followed with a few 1lb plus fish but a lot of small ones,a quick turn round on the tide and Paul was in to a 5lb cod then i latched on to another rooker about the same size we thought that this could be a good start but no more appeared a freind of ours was fishing just out side of us and he had one cod about the same size, its still a bit early but we are hoping this will be a good cod season, iam running a heaveist Cod compition with £100 first prize from 1st November 2012 through to May 31st 2013, all anglers that fish from Cleveland Princess will be able to enter fishing with one rod and a maximum of 2 hooks no baits bared rod must be nominated if useing more than one, cost to enter is £2.00 per person per trip, good luck and lets see some big doubles this coming season last seasons best went to Paul Hudson with a cracking 25.5lb cod that will take some beating,Brian/Paul

I had my first winter beginners fishing trip booked this weekend. I wouldnt usually take bookings quite yet as sometimes the codling can be slow coming in but I had heard of few being caught and was persuaded by the person wanting to go fishing, Daniel Cooper, to take my first booking this early in the season. He specifically wanted to go on 6th October as it was his girlfriend, Hannah's, birthday on the Friday and he booked it as a surprise as she had always wanted to go fishing. He hired the whole boat for 3hours. Saturday morning arrived and the pouring rain in the night had eased to light drizzle. By the time I had got my boat in ready and set the rods up it had dried out and the sun emerged through the clouds as we headed out through the moorings. Hannah was so excited. It was so different from their normal lifestyle of living in London. They are both medical students working towards becoming doctors next year which will then take a further 5-7 years to qualify as a doctor in the area they choose to specialise in. Hannah hopes to become an accident and emergency hospital doctor whereas Daniel is keen to be a physciatric doctor. On the way out the tide was down far enough I could show Hannah the wading birds, something I take for granted but she hasnt seen before. As we dropped the anchored and cast out waiting eagerly for our first fish we admired the view. Its not often I get a chance to stop and look at the beauty around me and really appreciate it, Im always on the go and never seem to stop. The view was breath-taking as we looked back on Mersea. Mersea seems to have its own weather system, above our heads was cloudy but Mersea was clear blue cloudless skies, but as the morning progressed the clouds disappeared above us as well. We started catching a few whiting which really pleased Hannah and Daniel as they had arrived later than expected and this limited their fishing time which always puts pressure on you as a skipper as it also limits their chances of catching anything. While we sat waiting and hoping for a codling the seal popped his head up in the distance which made Hannah's day, she wanted to see more of the seal and as we sat fishing the seal got closer and closer which really pleased her. After this we had a couple of nice plate sized whiting which Hannah and Daniel were keen to take home for their dinner so watched eagerly as I measured to make sure they were big enough to keep which fortunately they were. Unfortunately Mr Cod didnt come to play before it was time to haul the anchor but that didnt matter to Hannah and Daniel as they had enjoyed being out in the fresh country air with the glorious sunshine beaming down on them while out on a boat in the River Blackwater. When they left they were aiming for the Company Shed for a spot of lunch but before they had lunch there was something Daniel had planned to do. They headed off to the beach that they had ben looking back on from the boat earlier and Daniel proposed to Hannah and she said 'yes'. So it was a celebration lunch in the Company Shed for them and I had an email from Daniel later to thank me for helping them kick the day off so nicely. It is so nice to think I played a part in their special day of engagement, Daniel had told me he had looked at hiring so many different boats around the coast so to think he chose mine is a real credit to Lady Grace.

I was disappointed we hadnt caught a cod yesterday so I headed out early Sunday morning on my own for a few hours, no cod but I was extremely pleased to catch a sized bass this late in the season in the River so my bass made up for no cod. Maybe on my next trip the cod will come out to play.
