  • 25/07/2012 Fishing Report by Ron Angel on Why Worry (Burnham-On-Crouch, Essex)

25 Jul 2012 by Ron Angel

    Report on-board Why Worry

An early start today.Leaving the marina a little after 04.30am it was certainly a glorious morning and this time of the year,I consider it to really be the best part of the day.
Only the 3 of us today as one couldn't make it due to a family problem and one was a 'No Show'.It was a busy old day really. The Mackerel seemed scarce today. No idea why,it just seems to vary from day to day.We got enough for what we wanted anyway.
We put the Hook down where we should of done it yesterday.I always think it helps to go with the banker mark rather than where you think they 'May' be.
From the off we was into Hounds. Not big fish, the biggest around 10lb but plenty of them and it kept the rods nodding.....Along with the weed.
Brian had never been Hound fishing or indeed used Hermits.I think he is now hooked lol
Dan caught well and of course, had to go and spoil it by catching a roker! I think I had one too at one stage lol
At low water I gave the option of what they wanted to do. We decided to go off south a couple of miles and see if we could find a bigger Bass, rather than going up and into the sands for more Hounds on the flood tide. I set the hook in about 14ft of water.I like it here. The water swirls and rushes over a rock hard lumpy bottom.I know Andy likes it here because he has had 3 Double figure Bass with me from this spot. You seem to either get the big ones here or none at all. Today the Bass never wanted to know. The Hounds were playing here though and they go off like Exocet Missiles once they get any inclination things are not right in there crub munching and noshing world lol
Not big fish 6-8lb fish but they fight like Demons here and are great fun to catch at this spot.
All in all another Glorious day with plenty of fish to keep the interest and of course it was Hot,Hot,Hot again!
Day off tomorrow as I need to to do a few bits and to try too grown some new skin on my hands after 4 days on the trot Hound fishing, but out again Friday,Saturday and Sunday.

    Jul 2012 by Ron Angel

    Report on-board Why Worry

With a crew of 'Non Anglers' today it was never going to be easy......When you get plenty of weed and plenty of fish it becomes a tad busy!
The boys we had today (6 of them) apart from one, had never picked a rod up in there lives! They learned quickly though :)
First thing was to get a few Mackerel which we managed but also a few Bass amongst them on the feathers.Only chuck back size but it was nice to see them.
Just a short run from there to put the hook down in 25ft to try to stay out of the tide.It was pretty dire for the first hour or so but then livened up a tad! lol The weed was awful but the fish were amongst it.
2-3-4 fish on at the same time! We had some nice Hounds to 14lb and a some nice Rokers (Is there such a thing and did I really just say that? )
The boys were happy and a steady few fish came to the boat throughout the flood. At high water we needed to move to the other end of the bank as this particular bank fishes one end on the flood and the other on the Ebb.More Hounds but the weed was awful again. You need to fish through the weed though as the fish are there. In the last half hour I told the boys to all fish fresh Mackerel baits as I know there are a few Bass lurking around on this mark and they do like a bit of Mackerel....Bingo! Last 5 minutes and I saw the bite.He went to grab the rod and I shouted as did Dan, to leave it...It then had it away and a nice fish of 6lb hit the deck.
The boys learnt quickly today and fished well, especially with the amounts of weed.Seasoned anglers would probably of not even tried as they like it easy lol but there are plenty of fish there. You just have t work a bit harder for them.
Dan worked his cock off today. He worked one side of the boat and I worked the other. It was pretty non stop and we both felt pretty knackered!
The guys today were a proper nice bunch. Not often you get that sort of people. They even brought the whole Charter fee into the cabin before we even left.I never asked but they just paid straight away. They showed there appreciation of a good day at the end by giving us a £60 tip. That don't happen too often but it is nice when people appreciate the service we try to give.
Thanks Dan,you worked hard today and filled Andys shoes admirably who is off sick with a bad back.
Get well soon Andy we miss you mate!

    Report on-board High Flyer 2

Tonights evening trip was superb flat calm hardly a ripple, havent seen these conditions for months! As our time is limited we chose the Corton outside bank in hope of skate at slack. Started off well with Matts smoothy pictured here, few small spotted dogs ,plenty of makerel about but with no viz and discoloured water feathers no good. Went through the slack, eating the famous bacon rolls, decided to move off to the church as no skate appeared. Paul lost lovely size smoothound at the net good double we think, as the night went on those summer whiting decided to show! Whats going on? was a great evening weather wise, had a good bit of banter, thanks to Paul Layton for organizing trip with guests, Matt,Ben,Andy,Wayne,Clive, and Pete, hoped to have seen more fish like the odd bass ,maybe next time. was a pleasure to be out there. Thanks men.
    Jon.
