Report on-board She Likes It Rough 2
Fishing in May was hampered by the weather with quite a few trips having to be re-scheduled. When the Weather allowed fishing was Generally good. The ground fishing has been very good with large numbers of smoothounds landed each trip, On average we were landing 20-25 per trip with most fish in the 6-9lb range and a few good double figure fish were also landed on each trip, the best hound of the month went 16lb 4oz. We also landed 6 -10 Roker per trip so a good mixed day was had on the ground

The Offshore Wrecking has also improved now with plenty of cod and a good few Pollock showing from the distant wrecks. The Baitfish have also arrived. On our last trip plenty of Mackerel and Launce were caught as Bait for the first Bassing trip of the season for us, it was a steady day with over 20 Bass landed up to 7lb and then a short stop on a wreck rounded the day off with 20-30 Cod. So things are looking good for June, if the weather allows of course! -

After 15 years absent from sea fishing, I was worried that I wouldn't remember what to do. I didn't need to worry as the Skipper (Phil) supported me in every way. I didn't need to ask him to help he was at my side when I needed advice on how, where and when to catch the fish. We had a great day's fishing, caught every fish that Phil had mentioned. Phil is an excellent tutor, enjoys his work very much and I would recommend him to novices and experienced fishermen alike. I can't wait to go again.

Another day of inclement weather! (See the second video that I have uploaded on my videos page). A VERY Strong South Westerly breeze blowing (35MPH) against the tide made it impossible to go wrecking today but the excellent crew that was aboard today opted to save the day after travelling 136 miles to come out today and we went uptiding instead. A great day was had with many laughs and great humor, along with the fishing too. Smoothounds, Bass and Skate again. What a great bunch of lads to be out with, they made the day! Thanks!

What a day for weather! A strong South Westerly blowing but we still managed to get out and we persevered. Some cracking big Whiting caught and also some nice Bass and Smoothounds. All fell to either Squid or Ragworm. We also had one Skate as well which was unusual on the mark that we fished.

Today saw the new prop put on. A shiny new prop that greatly enhances the boats potential now! After sea trials with it we noticed a 50% improvement in the speed of the boat and a 30% reduction in fuel consumption which makes a big difference to our trips now as we can go further distances a lot quicker and save a lot more fuel. Thanks to all who made it possible.

We had a cracking day out.A few Skate, some nice Smoothounds and a few sizable Bass. Nice calm day out and blue skies until mid afternoon. Weather turned a bit on the way in but a very good days fishing for a quick trip out that turned out to be a full day as we just couldnt bare to leave the fish. Roll on more trips like this!

Report on-board Galloper
The fishing from Mersea has been great over the past few weeks. At first we had a good run of bass which we are still catching. These fish were schoolie sized fish and most falling to worm baits. The first trip we saw them we had 16 bass with a lot of keepers and the biggest falling to lee Johnson with a fish of 7.2lbs. the next week saw a fair bit of wind and we only got out on the Friday and could venture too far. However we still found a few thornbacks. We totalled 13 for the day with a couple of doubles and plenty of dogs to keep us busy. The next three days were too windy so we weren’t out. The next week the tides were just right for the bass so we tried again with 54 bass to 5lbs on the first day and 53 on the second. We have also seen a few soles mixed in where we are using worm baits. However this is only occasionally but they must be pretty hungry to take a 4/0 hook!

The next week saw another low pressure and more wind, however this time it was in the west so we had loads of shelter. We had hire rods out each day and managed 15 thornbacks on the Saturday and 11 on the Sunday with a few other odds and sods mixed in too. The next week we had some fine weather again, we were in search of a mixed bag with the hopes of the first double figure hound of the season. We didn’t find the big hound and had just 7 up to 5-6lbs. We did find a few bass in the morning which kept us busy for a couple of hours. We had around 50-60 schoolies up to about 2.8lbs with most of them under sized. It was great fun though with the feathers taking 3 at a time and red gills pulling them out too.
the next few weeks we will turn our attension to the tope on some trips and on others we should find good numbers of thornbacks and smoothounds aswell as bass mixed in here and there.
