Its getting embarrassing that ive got to keep catching a Cod when i take fishing partys out to do that job only joking,we are getting the odd decent fish at the moment with some lovely sized Whiting yesterday the best 41cms a good pound and half fish,we keep plugging away and getting out to our better marks with this cold snap that weve got it should bring the sea temp down to allow the Cod to come and feed inside so that you get a chance of some decent fish, the one i got yesterday just touched 7lb i am sure there will be a run very shortly so dont give up,BP.for a trip out call 07771926590.

Fishing Report by Scott Belbin
on Galloper (Brightlingsea, Essex)
Jan 2017 by Scott Belbin
Report on-board Galloper
Since my last report we have had some lovely days afloat. On all the trips we have done over the past month we have been lucky enough to be out on unseasonably flat calm days. However for one reason or another we have ended up fishing almost entirely within the confines of the blackwater estuary. Depending on the tide on any given day we have been splitting most days between targeting dabs or targeting thorn-back rays. Although they may not be the most exiting fish the dabs have done us proud and helped fill the void left by this seasons lack of cod in our area. there was a fair mix of sizes from postage stamps to some stonking door mats the biggest of which went 335mm long (sorry I didn’t bother weighing it). The thorn-backs have also varied in size but there were a few better ones mixed in with the biggest going 10.2lbs and our best day 12 along with lots of whiting and dabs. Earlier in December we had a fair surprise as Dave Harris (who is a regular aboard the ‘Galloper’) pulled a haddock over the side. I think he miss-took it for a slinky codling at first and I must admit I had to do a double take to make sure it wasn’t some kind of disfigured whiting. I have fished here all of my life having grown up on charter boats and have never seen one caught here before. I had heard of them coming out in the 70’s and early 80’s aboard my dads charter boats but this was a first aboard one of my boats and made a change from whiting!

Over the last few days things have been sounding a little more promising for those who have ventured beyond the estuary with a few more thorn-backs getting about so hopefully by the time I’m out again and the dabs move out we should have something sizable to target. The last few years have produced some of the biggest thorn-backs through out January and February locally so fingers crossed we can get amongst them. As for the mythical creature known as the thames estuary cod I’m not going to hold my breathe but I will say that there is a lot more chance of catching one if you wet a line than there is by sitting on the sofa.

Report on-board High Flyer 2
Well its a Happy New Year to everyone 2017 were all hoping to get our christmas presents wet, soon as were allowed permission to go fishing and the inlaws have gone home and the hangover and full belly feeling dissapears. The cod on the east coast here has been poor so far were all blaming the mild weather also the millions of whiting attacking the baits anywhere you put your line down at times very testing. Few odd skate still appearing plus odd spotty dog and flatties making up the sport. Weather depending plans are to hopefully arrange few spurdog trips soon can be hit or miss hard fish to target but will have a go as keep being asked. Its always this time of year the smartest among us book the weaker tides for wrecking or start of the tope trips for the heavy females so do get in and give it some thought to save disapointment tide timetables available everywhere now. We have new set of tackle this year for High Flyer with rods and reels to try, also looking at more night trips in next few months as got a feeling these cod are moving in over the ground at night so get your name down with me by text or email will look at suitable tides and give options. Still leaving about 6pm home by midnight so you can go to work next day same prices £45 per person using own tackle add £5 using ours to cover losses /replacement etc. as always we supply different baits we do supply lug but as always bring a handfull for your own personal use if you wish to use big baits. So lots of plans this year let me know if you have any ideas too looking forward to being of service, big thanks to everyone who has supported me through good and bad fishing, also the time taken to put reviews up its very much appreciated leaving you with a few tope we caught as it seems to be the most popular fish to catch until then happy new year to you all,

We found some good Thornback Rays, Barry who was on the boat 27th Dec had a PB a nice 14 lbs Thornback and his son Justin also caught some nice Rays.
Over the last couple of days we split the trips between fishing for Rays and Dab’s and Whiting, and while fishing for Dabs yesterday Allen hooked a 5lbs Thornback Ray on a size 2 hook, but eased it up gently to the net…. Well done mate, 4 of the guys done Clay pigeon shooting and it was a titanic battle for the silver and bronze medals with a dead tie at 14 clays each, it was sudden death and ended up 18 to 17, I thought they were doing it on purpose, as the tie break cartridges are free of charge…..lol
Still no Cod showing at the moment, well not on the bottom where we need them, the trawlers are seeing some high up in the nets and coughing up Herring.
With the weather forecast to start freezing into January that will no doubt trigger the sprat run to join the Herring spawning that are already here let’s just hope those spring run Codling follow the sprat’s and we get a spring Cod run, the water temperature is now down to 5 degrees now so it’s in the lap of the God’s now..!
Happy new years to all angler everywhere and we hope for a productive 2017.
Tight lines ……. -

Report on-board Girl Mandy
Merry Christmas and a great new year to all our lads and ladies and youngsters many thanks for your support and business through 2016 heres hoping the weather and our cod come back soon, i can tell you it has been one of the most trying winters for a long time and our saving grace was the Thornback ray that kept our spirits up,as well as the arrival of a nice run of dabs and some fantastic whiting bashing. So this will be our last report for 2016 hopefully we will see all our regulars and our new clubs in 2017. Till then tight lines and good fishing from myself and Matt
