    Report on-board Hard Labour

This weekend the bass came out to play. With an improving forecast right through until Sunday, Saturday saw us on one of the offshore banks with the intention of finding a few bass and they did not disappoint. Although the majority of fish were schoolies there were some bigger fish mixed in. Bait of the day was lug worm for the bass and from here on into the summer when we are looking for bass we will be using a lot of lug. Final tally was about 20 bass with 5 fish retained for the pot. Amongst the rest of the catch were hounds upto 5lb, roker, whiting, doggies and a bucket full of dabs.

Sunday again saw us on the offshore banks but with a different quarry in mind, as our party of anglers wanted to catch roker. Bait today was mainly herring. After a slow start and a move to find a bit more tide, the fish started to come on. slowly at first, but as the tide started to die double and triple hook ups were fairly common. Again we had a few bass on this bank on the worm baits, going a shade over 4lb, Also the ever abundent dogfish and plenty of dabs again putting in a show, with a few more hounds to boot. All said and done the guys took home about 18 roker, biggest was 9lb10oz, with at least 10 more released, a dozen dabs and 4 bass.

  • 21/04/2012 Fishing Report by Ron Angel on Why Worry (Burnham-On-Crouch, Essex)

21 Apr 2012 by Ron Angel

    Report on-board Why Worry

To be honest today wasn’t planned until Thursday. I had a full boat booking for the guys from Ford Motor Co tomorrow (Sunday) but again, the weather is just not going to let me get the guys Offshore to where I want to take them. I won’t take people’s money to sit them in the River and although they give the weather dropping away throughout the day, the first part of day is going to be not very nice with the wind over the tide so decided to call it off and take them another time.
That meant Saturday could be a goer looking at the forecast.Only one person wanted to join me and Andy and again Dan said he wanted to go.
We were away from the marina at 6am on a flat calm river but by the time we cleared the Whittiker it was a little snotty but not too bad once the tide got going. We ran to the far end of the windfarm and set the hookin 34ft in the hope of a Cod or 2.We waited and we waited. We got a Dogfish and then waited some more. This was bollox and a move was needed. A quick 20 minute dash and we were fishing again. This was better within the first 2 minutes! As I got the food underway Dan and Andy started getting a few Hounds, not big but at 5lb-6lb it was a vast improvement on the last mark. Then the Roker started but only on the Herring baits. It was busy, very busy. Andy stuck to the Squid and carried on getting Hounds. Myself and Dan switched to Herring and managed 28 Roker with some nice doubles amongst them. A good few of the fish were between 9lb and 11lb and they go like stink on the bit we were fishing. The Dogfish and Whiting were present too. Then a surprise, I thought I was into another Roker, albeit a big one….This fish was hanging deep. I started to think it may not be a Roker but 2 hung together. Then I saw it, I thought at first it was a big Hound, as it came closer I then thought it was a small Tope. It went under the boat I was expecting the ‘Bite off’ luckily the hook was in the scissors, Andy slid the net under it,I could now see it wasn’t a Tope, as it came aboard Andy said ‘It’s a Spurdog’ I said you sure? He said yes, then I saw the Spurs!! We got her into the slings and the scales showed 18lb 2oz. excellent result and a fish I haven’t seen in the Thames for a while although they do get them a lot further Offshore but I have never seen one or heard of one where we were today. We let her go. I have to admit for a second, I did think of knocking it on the head but, she was in pup and they are not that common in our area and maybe, just maybe in a couple of years, time if we return them and let them multiply they will be a regular visitor. Who knows? They may even become the ‘New Dogfish’ lol
An excellent day all round and by 3pm we had had enough. We kept 4 Roker and let 24 go. I must be getting soft in my old age… But maybe I just cannot be bothered to skin as many as I used too.
Dan, you’re a great bloke to fish with and I really do enjoy your company. Andy, you again played a blinder and are always there to help. I think we can say that today was another success. Let’s hope there are many more to come this summer. I have to say I am absolutely knackered after that lot but I look forward to next time!!

    Report on-board Hard Labour

8 rods on the boat today, a couple of seasoned anglers and a few novices. The trip out to the offshore grounds was a bit lively to say the least with wind against tide, but once the hook was set the boat sat steady at anchor. Action on the ebb tide was hectic with skate after skate hitting the deck and at times 3 rods into fish at the same time.As the tide slowed so did the fishing although fish were still coming to the net steadily. The flood started to fish much the same as the ebb finished but picked up as the tide made. There were a few more dogfish around this week as the water temp has increased. Also we saw a greater number of smoothhounds with the largest going just over 8 lb. Final tally for the day was well over 50 roker on the boat with each angler taking a couple for the table and the rest returned. No monsters this week biggest skate was a tad over 11 lb. the crew on board had a really good day out with plenty of fish and the weather went in our favour too.

  • 12/04/2012 Fishing Report by Ron Angel on Why Worry (Burnham-On-Crouch, Essex)

12 Apr 2012 by Ron Angel

    Report on-board Why Worry

An early start yesterday was called for as I wanted to get the best part of the tide up our arse to take us Offshore. Luke and Dan was my guests today and Andy the trusty crew.As long as I have a 'Booking' and the weather is good then 'We go fishing' no messing around on Why Worry for a minimum amount of crew. Armed with brand new Squid and the finest Herrings we were away from the marina for 6.15am.A good run at 23knts for just 3150 revs now the boat is clean again. The fishing was hot from the off. The only problem on the ebb was the amount of Dogfish in the swim. As long as a Dogfish never grabbed the bait within 10 seconds of it being on the bottom, then a Roker did. The only grumble was the Roker were a little on the small side. Perfectly sizeable to keep but I wanted to find the boys some bigger ones. We had a short move after a couple of hours and we did indeed find some bigger ones. As the tide got going the fishing died a little so another short move put us back on them. This time the fish were really coming aboard in numbers and very few Dogfish amongst them. Bearing in mind it was only maybe 200 yards from where we fished the the ebb, the flood tide produced bigger Rokers and the Dogfish had petered out. Luke also added a few good sized Whiting into the mix.
I don’t know how many Roker we had all told. We kept 15 and put more than that back. The bigger females went back as well as many others as we had more than enough for what everybody wanted. All in all an excellent days fishing, the weather was perfect and the company perfect too.
Just to say bait wise, Herring absolutely was the top bait today. It murdered the Squid in the Roker stakes.
