    Report on-board Razorbill 3

With the weekendweather set fine we have ben able to get to some of the better marks, we are still getting good bags of double figure THORNBACKS, The SMOOTHOUNDS are around in numbers but the TOPE seem to be a bit elusive with some good fish caught but they don't seem to stay in one area for very long.

Fishing over the next few weeks should be good now we have the better weather,

If you haven't booked for the winter COD fishing you will need to book soon.

    Report on-board PLAN B

Took group of quality anglers from Southend out to a distant mark . Weather was fantastic. Bait was fresh peeler and hermits and quickly hounds started to show, not big about 5lb average. after a couple of hours the sport died along with the tide so we moved further down river and tried our luck again, a few small dogs and whiting on feathers meant for mackerel and then a nice 13.5 hound (see picture) arrived. The tide turned and along with it came rafts of weed, so another move to the spot in the shallows where we caught all the skate the previous day (another secret spot - only 4 other boats there already!)
Some nice skate caught up to around 7lb about 6 or 7 until the weed became unbearable, so we opted for a bit of mackerel bashing for the last half hour which resulted in about a dozen..

    Report on-board PLAN B

    Saturday 22nd May.
Took a group of total novices out, what they lacked in skill they made up in enthusiasm. The weather was supposed to be hot but it started off very overcast and gray.
We went to a secret lower river mark (only 2 boats already on it!) and got on the hounds straight away..all falling to large hermit baits, strangely none took squid. We had about 10 but as the tide sacked off I decided to move off to deeper water to try to get a few skate. No bites at all, so moved into shallows for first of flood and caught about 15 skate, best one 10lb (all returned to play another day) a few more hounds plus dogs taking the fish baits intended for skate.
Photo's to follow, my camera ran out of memory, only got one picture of a 7lb hound (the best one was 9.5)

    Report on-board Razorbill 3

The weather was sunny and flat calm, just what we need, after an hour run to the mark the first fish was a BASS of 3lb, another two smaller BASS and we moved,
The first fish was a DOGFISH....... not what we wanted but you can't pick what fish you want to catch, The next fish was a bit better, A COD of 10lb, then another of 16lb 8oz, we only had 6 COD but the smallest was the 10lb,With 10 Bass and some big WHITINGS it wasn't such a bad day!

Another fine start to the day so a trip to see if we could get some BASS and SMOOTOUNDS. We arrived at the mark just at low water, The fishing was slow and with only one small THORNBACK,Then John had a bite, a fine 6lb 4oz BASS, two other anglers had another two BASS of 4lb and small THORNBACK, Fishing was slow so we moved to another mark, As soon as we cast out we were in to fish, a THORNBACK of 8 1/2lb. Fishing was steady with THORNBACKS and DOGFISH, Total for the day 9 THORNBACKS, 3 BASS, 1 SMOOTHOUND and DOGFISH.

It was good to see that the weather was on the change, The wind has been stuck in the N East for two weeks, We can still get out but it restricts where you can go it's just as well that we can still get some good fishing close inshore,
The day started with the wind in the N East about 3/4 and by the end of the day it was in a warmer South and decreased,The fishing was not fast but steady with 18 THORNBACKS to 8 1/2lb around 25 SMOOTHHOUNDS but they were all small ( i would think that the bigger ones are just offshore) and about a MILLION DOGFISH, Well maby not a million but more than enough, It kept the anglers busy all day.

    Report on-board PLAN B

Fished Saturday 8th May , poor conditions but keen to get out and give the boat a good run.
went to a mark on the maplin sands and caught skate sporadically during the day, the anglers mostly freshwater carp men all managed at least a skate each, best fish was an 11lb skate with about 10-15 being released to fight another day.
A few doggies and a couple on tiny hounds made the total haul, but considering the weather and lack of experience a good days fishing was had by all.

    Ray Martin.
