Report on-board Phosphorescent 'WH1'
After our first attempts to get on Plaice grounds in Christchurch Bay in late March conditions have finally got better with the water looking like the Sea not Tea now. We had to wait until the flood tide got away to get to the mark as the wind was howling early on. We had a steady stream of Dabs, Dogs and Smoothounds before the first plaice turned up. but when they did switch on they fed hard and it was a mad hour and a half of brilliant fishing. All of the Anglers were fishing with very light tackle and those aboard new to it were blown away by the hard fights and savage takes on the HTO ML rods. Blinged rigs are the norm and worm and prawn cocktail the top bait. I did try drop shotting for them after I caught 5 on bait. I had two good takes but I failed to hook up on the Isome Sandworms. (I had far to big a hook on and the fish were just grabbing the end of the lure). One thing that was very obvious was the difference in takes between bait and lure...the fish hitting the lures actually HIT it...like little Halibut we've experienced in Norway. We ended up with 20 Plaice in all with an absolute stonker touching 5lbs to Roger Wheatland right at the end of the day. It's back to work for me until mid May, I'm sure this will fly by as I'm so excited about coming back to hit the Bream and Bass and some more of these fantastic Red Spots.

We have just been on a two day / overnight trip to sunny Weymouth. It's this time of the year that the famous Shambles Bank starts to throw up some lovely Turbot and the nearby Mussel beds fish for Plaice, there are also plenty of other species to catch too. 6 of us travelled and had a great night in the Sailors Return and local Curry House meeting up with plenty of other skippers and anglers alike. Everyone landed there target species with a couple PB fish for the guys too. Can't wait to go back.

March 29th - Bank Fishing for Rays
View Boats Page
On Friday 29th March I had a charter from Gary Hirons and his mate John aboard Phosphorescent. It was Johns birthday and the lads had travelled up with their wives for a few days in Lymington. Gary and John have their own boat in Kent and specialise in Bassing on their own patch and had never fished for Rays. At this time of year the grounds have been left alone for a good few months and can fish exceptionally well as we found upon settling down for a full flood tide. Not only did I expect a variety of Rays but there should be some large Congers (another new species for the lads) still hanging around after there winter feasting.
The lads fished both up and downtide with a variety of cocktails baits (Squid, Mack, Sandeel or Bluey) and caught fish from the off. Frst up was a Thronback Ray to Gary and then the Blondes started to arrive as we swung over the sand and the tide picked up. As the tide got going the Congers woke up and John had 4 in a row with biggest around 45lbs. The rays continued with Gary taking a nice female around 17lbs and John a male of similar size. Gary then caught a small eyed ray (pretty rare these days) and I commented it would be great to catch unduate also....well last drop of the day he did exactly that, another fish around 17lbs. A great day afloat in absolutley stunning conditions. Job done for the day and for Gary something pretty cool 4 of the 5 ray species you catch in the area all in a few hours. We ended up with 15 Rays and 6 Congers. -

It's that time of year when us boat Anglers are getting ready for the season ahead. A hardy few will have fished through from Xmas until now and fair play to them....!

With the first bit of real sun and warmth down here in the New Forest we have headed out a couple of times in the last weeks to try inshore around the Isle of Wight and Christchurch Bays.
March 22nd - Individuals Ultralight Trip
The plan for the day was to look in and around Christchurch Bay for some early season flatfish primarily Plaice, Turbot and Dabs. I had a mixed crew and for the first time I can remember more of the lads wanted to fish exclusively with lures rather than bait something unheard of several years ago. The conditions in Christchurch Bay were awful with the water clarity @ zero....! In fact it looked like the perfect cup of Tea. I spoke with a mate who was fishing in Bournemouth Bay and it was far cleaner so we pushed on round Hengistbury Head and headed to the known plaice marks off Boscombe and Bournemouth. To cut a long story short this was also dire. Several charter boats were already there and I saw 1 tiny plaice come aboard all those fishing. I headed back towards the Head and stopped a little mark where there is some structure hoping that we could at least pick up a wrasse or pollock for the guys fishing lures. Well that was the plan on the third drift Neil Perry had a hit on a tiny Savage Sandeel and his tiny LRF rod bent double. After several fruitless hours we were intrigued to as what he had hooked...the fish stayed deep and had a couple of little dives, certainly not a Bass, Wrasse or Pollock: probably a Codling. When after a couple of minutes a Turbot around 3lbs slid into the net Neil, myself and I think most of the other guys were ecstatic....only a small fish but a target achieved and with it being caught on a lure a marker to show that there is a change at foot in the way guys want to fish in UK in 2015. -

Report on-board White Maiden II
What a mixed bag of trips this week. Thursdays short two boat competition with ATR Winchester found two good fish in the huge tide, amongst the Whiting, Pout and Dogs. Ian above fishing on 'White Maiden' caught and released this cracking 'in-pup' Bull Huss that weighed a hefty 14lb. One of Johns crew on 'Last Laugh' caught a cracking 20lb Cod to win the biggest fish trophy.

On Wednesday an Individuals crew started outside the Light in an uncomfortable beam on sea for a few fish including a Bass, a 20lb Conger and some reasonable Whiting, Pout, Dogs and Poor Cod before the sea got to 50% of the anglers. Common sense prevailed and we ducked back inside Alum Bay for a well marked Spotted Ray for Bob and a nice plump Codling for John plus lots of Dogs.
On Tuesday David huddled in the cab keeping me company for the whole trip wrapped in a sleeping bag rather than disappoint his two 'not so young lads' ;-). One son fished right through wearing shorts in a good match type competition with his brother, who had only landed at Heathrow that morning at 6am, in from New Zealand. It was very cold day but a very sociable short session! The two brothers laughed all the way through and recorded an Edible (Brown) Crab each, a couple of Whiting and 15 or so Dogfish, a well matched competition.
On Monday we had arguably the best day of the week. We anchored up nicely only for a mate to anchor in what would be our stem in the ebbing tide. Not very close but yes it happens to all of us. As I was experimenting with long distance floated balloons in the ideal tide I had to move away. We tried hard for a Ray and a Conger at 2 miles and 3 miles plus we caught the occasional nice Whiting but compared to the previous day, it was an anti-climax but what a cracking January dayUPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD White Maiden II

Report on-board White Maiden II
Here's a very quick update/report. Pictured is Lee Tovell who fished the Western Solent along with his two sons, on White Maiden, on Saturday. The North West F5 was 45 degrees to the ebbing tide and off the main land, although cold, it made for a very comfortable day. Cod were the main target and the best boated was a Codling of 3lb 8oz along with a Bass of 4lb. There were plenty of small Whiting and Pout. Along with other Codling the catch was similar to the day before, although less Codling. Again the flood tide went quiet as it has for the whole week. But that was only for the last hour.
