  • 19/07/2015 Fishing Report by Peter Davis on Warrior II (Looe, Cornwall)

19 Jul 2015 by Peter Davis

    Report on-board Warrior II

Here we are then over half way through July, the sharks are biting and the mackerel are still hard to find in any numbers. We finished June after the excitement of Nigel's fish and started July by winning the annual S.A.C.G.B
Festival with Steve Dawe (yes the same man who qualified with me last year) catching a very nice 109lb Blue Shark and taking the best fish over the 3 days (8 boats).
To remind any sharkers who catch a Shark and are interested in joining the Shark Angling Club of G. B. the measurements are Blue 7ft from tip to tip and all others 5ft from tip of nose to FORK of tail, a girth measurement is always handy as well ! (you can txt me for more details if having trouble contacting club)
The weather is not being kind at the moment and a few more trips than I would like are having to be cancelled.
The Reef fishing is patchy at present and is Fab one day and challenging on others ! Looking fwd to seeing all of you that have dates booked - sharpen those hooks and check your gear - don't let a 2 year old swivel cost you the fish of a lifetime !!
Finally a few quality sharks have been boated, measured and returned this last few days, best of 125lb (est) aboard the Mistique 2 with Dave Bond. That's it for now, keep that rod bent !!
    Pete

  • 19/07/2015 Fishing Report by Philip Higgins on Mistress Linda / San Gina3 (Poole, Dorset)

19 Jul 2015 by Philip Higgins

    Report on-board Mistress Linda / San Gina3

This week has seen both extremes of fishing with the weather on Monday keeping the Mistress Linda in Poole harbour catching many mini species and a few nice Plaice to midweek which a charter of young lads had me doubting my sanity before the trip but to be honest they were excellent company and great to have onboard they did get a bit excited catching mackeral in numbers making me work hard unhooking and untangling. The Tope were absent in big numbers on our planned day but we did catch a few and swopped a few fishy stories. The weekend offshore trips have produced some cracking numbers of Cod and Pollack no big fish best around the 10lb mark but great sport on light gear, because the fishing was so good we decided to have an hour on your oldest most knackered lure ( an idea given to me by a well respected local skipper) this proved a great laugh and still produced fish.
Come and join us aboard for a trip either inshore or offshore before the best of the fishing declines.
    All the best
    Philip Higgins

  • 16/07/2015 Fishing Report by Sam Cumming on Silver Spray II (Poole, Dorset)

16 Jul 2015 by Sam Cumming

    Report on-board Silver Spray II

In a mixed month weather wise the inshore fishing off Poole has been held up by the absence of mackerel, a key bait fish when we are targeting bass, rays and tope. Up until about a week ago it wasn’t even worth trying for them as we found ourselves spending 3 hours feathering for just a few baits. Thankfully on the back end of the last spring tide they finally arrived in numbers which made our days somewhat easier. We have seen the first of the silver ones on our reef marks on floats and free line gear, Ian Webb produced a fine bass of 8lb 12oz on a free line jumbo mackerel which is the biggest of the year so far. Out on the offshore banks the tope are around in abundance, frozen mackerel has been good enough to get them on the feed whilst we have been struggling for the fresh stuff.
Cherbourg kicked off last month in brilliant fashion with 2 trips back to back without any wind and some of the best fishing I’ve seen those grounds produce. Huge numbers of cod and pollock on a wide spread number of wrecks, the bigger fish like Gareth Awbury’s 22lber coming on rough ground. With bait fish easy to catch just outside Cherbourg harbour we have seen a more positive start to the bass fishing over there with several fish coming to the net when we have tried. Highlight of July so far has to be Duncan Fleming’s 8lb 12oz john dory caught on a blue sidewinder whilst cod fishing. Taken on the last drift of the day it was a reminder of what I love best about this job; that you just never know what might appear!

  • 12/07/2015 Fishing Report by Nigel Lihou on Optimist (Brixham, Devon)

12 Jul 2015 by Nigel Lihou

    Report on-board Optimist

Sorry folks that I am a bit sporadic with updates on what Optimist has been up to this year but things have been a bit hectic on the home front. Anyhow here's a resume of what's been fishing: - several trips to the Skerries this year have produced some very nice fish with Plaice up to 3lb and the usual mix of Gurnards, Whiting and mackerel even the appearance of the odd Cod over the dips, there has been some very good fishing on the bank this year so far depending on what is being targeted. Half days have mainly been on the inshore wrecks with a large amount of Pouting and a handful of Pollack up to about 6lb and some very good sized Whiting but on the whole not as productive as the Skerries but certainly some good sport. Mackerel as yet have been few and although catches have been reported from the shore we have been struggling from the boat.
Having already apologised for lack of reports I thought as we spent 3 days in Alderney last week I had better write an update. A good trip across to Alderney via the SW Casquets Bank where we had some good sized Turbot and Brill with some Tope reaching the surface only to snap the anglers trace as it was not strong enough the biggest Turbot of the day was sadly lost due to crossed lines and braid severing the trace. Day 2 filled up with bait fish just outside Braye harbour even a small Bass put in an appearance on feathers it was then of to the Banc de la Schole with some good Turbot and Brill and even managing to boat a small Tope there was also a mix of Gurnards and Mackerel, returning to a mark outside the harbour there was some very large Scad and Mackerel. Day 3 brought NW winds of force 4 - 5 some fishing was not good but tucked up in the SSE Casquets bank proved very unproductive with just a handful of Gurnards the sounder showed why as the bottom was very stirred up and the next day we found out a pair of French trawlers had been down the bank the night before cleaning it of Fish. Homeward bound was a bit of a rollercoaster but all safe and sound
Trips are planned and spaces available for Skerries and Wrecks just call for details and as always we are available for charter for what you want to fish for at competitive rates.

    Report on-board Mistress Linda / San Gina3

Due to the recent strong winds recently we have fished Poole Harbour and the Swash channel, during this time we have great fun catching a total of 27 different species ranging from blenny's to small Tope. This is good practice for any competition angler but can be frustrating for a beginner as the fish are well practiced at stealing the bait. The Ray fishing is still producing cracking fish with the best Undulate of 18lb 3ozs being caught on a spinning rod at slack water last week.
