Merry Christmas everyone and Tight lines in 2014. Fishing lately has been mainly pouting on the Wrecks with a variety of species on the inshore reefs. Weather has caused the cancellation of a few trips and it seems at the moment to be blowing gale force winds every other day, but when the weather allows we will try and get out. Optimist is remaining afloat all winter and we look forward to seeing friends old and new aboard, February should see the larger Pollack arriving on the Wrecks, with April bringing Plaice to the Skerries Bank. Unfortunately we are going to have to put the price of full boat charters up next year as the cost of fuel keeps going up and the distances travelled for decent fish seem to be further, also individual's will have to share this burden as well. We are however offering customers who place a booking for 2014 with us before then end of February the chance to still have the 2013 rates.
On a lighter note I was offered the opportunity to join a trip aboard Atlantic Blue out of Minehead earlier this week for Cod, although when we boarded the Skipper Mike said that Cod were pretty scarce at the moment, I did however manage to catch 3 strap conger, a Thornback Ray and half a dozen Dogfish, the cod that did come aboard were not even codling except for one 19lber boated by the organiser Derek, a really good days fishing in very muddy water. A recent trip for a bunch of local lads to the Cod grounds off the Isle of Wight through up some great fish. After arriving in style accross Poole bay at 20 knots hooks were baited and lowered with antcipation. The lesser spotted dog fish took this to mean that the buffet was open and doggy after doggy was brought on board. After the tide turned the proper fish made an apperance and we ended the day with 3 cod and a bonus big bass.

December Report:
Christmas is only 9 days away as I write this report and the temperature outside is still 10 degrees which is pretty much unheard of at this time of year. After about 3 weeks of pretty nice weather we are now in for southerly and south-westerly with rain for about a week so it may be after Christmas before we get out again. Cod fishing has been plodding along nicely with some really big fish taking the baits, in the last week of November we had 3 fish over 20lb in two trips which doesn’t happen often enough. Derek Morton took home a 23lber after trotting back cuttlefish bait at the height of the tide with a light lead; this really gave a good scrap on the lighter tackle. Ray Baldwin hooked up to only his 2nd ever cod on the 1st December and despite only being a very short fish it weighed in at 28lb 12oz, our biggest so far this season. During the winter all the fishing we do aboard Silver Spray is at anchor so it gives me some time to play around with our GoPro video camera. It’s taken a little while to get the hang of but this year’ efforts have produced some good footage which can be found on our YouTube channel and our Facebook page. As well as the cod we have seen some very good mixed fishing with congers, bass, whiting, thornback, small eyed and spotted rays all making an appearance. I will be heading out to the offshore banks on the first set of neap tides in January in search of this year’s spur dogs and blonde rays, let’s hope we get some better weather than last year. Hi All,
A long while since the last report, my apologies for this. Things certainly took a turn for the worse weather wise into October. As i'm sure many of you witnessed, the worst winds for 20 years put pay to allot of October and with that many of the summer species had gone when we eventually managed to get back out there.
It was a great summer mind you so we cant complain.
So far November has been producing a nice run of Channel Whiting mostly in the 1 1/2lb- 2 1/2lb bracket and the odd Cod thrown in for good measure on the inshore banks, congers and small eyed, blonde, undulate and thornback rays have all featured.
Bass fishing that is normally crazy at this time of year has been a little hit and miss which is fishing I suppose. But with the way things have been running late this year we may get a lucky surprise on the run up to christmas.
The highlight of most peoples day who fish from Weymouth at this time of year is the squid fishing we do at the end of the day just outside the harbour. The best session so far is 123 squid in about 15 mins absolutely crazy and messy!!
The run to Christmas will see the inshore fishing Focus on the whiting and the Bass if they are around, also we will start to look for the winter Pollack which will be a nice change of scenery.

First trip of the Happy Dangler's proved to be a success, good time was had by all on board Osprey, derek caught the 1st fish of the day with a small thornback, we then preceeded to catch conger after conger, with a few doggies mixed in, 1 topping 2lb 14oz, then in the last hour Mike Allen and his magic bait, managed a cod of 15lb 8oz..

At this time of year the winter season is well and truly upon us so the only sort of fishing I’ll be doing for the foreseeable future is for the inshore cod and whiting. The season was slightly late starting with the first cod hitting the deck on the 7th of November, but since then we haven’t had a blank day with 10 fish in the last 5 trips. Dave Perrett and Robert Summers supplied us with today’s action with a pair of 20lb fish. Dave hooked a pout on his 3 squid bait which was then taken by a very greedy cod, this highlights the importance of having both hook points showing well on your penel rig otherwise I expect the cod would have claimed its prize unchallenged. As well as the cod and whiting we have been kept busy with congers, thornback rays, bass and bull huss. The selection of quality species is what makes inshore winter fishing one of my favourite parts of the season. On the 14th of November Silver Spray II attended the annual Lowrance British Cod Championship down in Lymington, unfortunately due to weather we had to cut it short to just 1 day rather than 2. We managed 4 cod on the day, the biggest of which got angler Dave Wood 3rd biggest fish on the day. Dave’s brother Jon caught all 3 of the other fish and came in second place for overall bag weight, he used a squid and crab cocktail which proved very effective. Thanks to my anglers efforts I was extremely proud to be named top skipper of the 2013 comp, even if I only scraped the top spot by 10oz!!

So that’s the British Cod Championships all finished for another year, unfortunately due to the North-westerly that arrived today the comp was cut down to just the one day. I delivered the boat down to Lymington on Tuesday, as you can see I may have stopped off to have a little look where we might find the cod the next day. Wednesday’s weather was just perfect and my crew fished really well and brought 4 cod to the deck. Including Dave Woods 19lb 5oz which got him 3rd biggest fish overall. His brother John caught all 3 of the other fish and came second overall for combined weight. I was chuffed as nuts to be named Top Skipper for the 2013 Comp with a total weight of fish of 35lb 9oz, which topped the list just 10oz above Eric Elliot of Wight Rebel. Talk about a photo finish, well done to all who fished and many thanks to the West Wight Skippers Association for organising another brilliant competition.

During November we can expect to catch Rays,Cod,Turbot,Brill,Plaice,Bass,Congers,Bream,Whiting, etc.
NOVEMBERS first trip was spent at anchor on the Adamant Bank and Lots of Congers and an Undulate Ray were caught along with Whiting,Pout,Dogs and Poor Cod. Mark Laker from Kent caught his first ever Conger and Undulate Ray.Mark is pictured with his 14Ib Undulate Ray which was returned alive. Mark was using a Shakespear 20Ib class rod with a flowing trace and pennel rig of Sakuma 6/0 and 4/0 hooks baited up with a cocktail of Ammo Squid and Mackerel.
WINTER FISHING -
DECEMBER/JANUARY/FEBRUARY - As we get into Winter the Big Whiting will show along with some Big Cod. The Reefs and Banks will also produce Blonde and Undulate Rays,Conger and Bull Huss.The Winter Months is certainly the time for Big Pollack will be on the wrecks.
