  • 01/10/2013 Fishing Report by Sam Cumming on Silver Spray II (Poole, Dorset)

1 Oct 2013 by Sam Cumming

    Report on-board Silver Spray II

Fishing this last month hasn’t been the usual thing we do at this time of year, rather than heading offshore on the spring tides to hunt down the last of the bass we have been staying inshore targeting plaice which have been in abundance both in Poole Bay and down to the west. Using short traces of 20lb line with 1/0 kamasan hooks baited with rag worm and raw king prawns we have had some of the best plaice I’ve seen thus far. It has been nice to use some lighter tackle and target some smaller species for a change as a lot of the fishing onboard Silver Spray II is done further afield. Also in abundance have been both tub and red gurnard, always good fun on appropriate tackle, Andy Hayden beat over 30 flatties one day with his 1lb 12oz red gurnard which is well over 100% specimen. Our last trip across the channel fell on the first few days in October; we decided to combine the best bits of both Cherbourg and Alderney with great success. Pollock and ling of the wrecks on the first day were in abundance with several ling to 22lb hitting, the biggest one was brought to the surface on a 25lb mono bream rig!! On the second day we took the tide round Cap de la Hague, 27miles only took about 1 hour 20 minutes, and fished down on the shoal bank south of Alderney. I didn’t expect the turbot and brill fishing to be excellent but I was gladly surprised when a half day session produced 16 decent flats. After a few more hours on the banks the third day focused on bream, the hard fighting black bream being in abundance on the north side of the island. One species I have never had aboard Silver Spray II is a couches sea bream, lilac in colour they really are a beautiful fish, despite our best efforts we didn’t manage to connect with one but after one of the most enjoyable multi day trips of the year I will definitely be doing another one at the same time next year.

  • 13/10/2013 Fishing Report by nick smith on Samuel Irvin 3 (Dartmouth, Devon)

13 Oct 2013 by nick smith

    Report on-board Samuel Irvin 3

ian was waiting for us at kingswear as we walked down the jetty, he helped us aboard and got the kettle on....it was a rather grey start but not alot of wind as we steamed out of dartmouth heading for the famous skerries bank in search of that great eating fish the plaice.
Most of us were using light 6 - 12lb outfits with braid, 4 - 5oz watch leads and various types of rigs, double hook wishbones, long flowing double and single hook traces, but all were blinged up in the typical plaice style, beads, spoons, and some even had star lights.....baits used was rag worm, prawns, mussles. cockles and peeler, tipped off with a thin strip of squid or cuttle. It was the prawns, cockle and mussle baits that gave us most success throughout the day.
Wasn't long before the first fish came over the gunnels, a nice whiting, soon followed by the first plaice, gurnards and a doggie.....a couple set out some feathers and soon had mackerel and launce for the bait freezer, plus some good size mackerel for the table too.
As fishing slowed down ian moved us into some deeper water, which kept the fish coming with more plaice and a bonus turbot that brought smiles all round. Even the sun came out!
By the end of the day we all went home with plaice for dinner, and the species landed included, plaice, dab, whiting, mackerel, launce, turbot, dogfish and red, grey and tub gurnards....
Quite a few fish were lost at first by lifting into the fish too early, so good advice is when you feel the bite, let off some line.

  • 06/10/2013 Fishing Report by Stephen Wake on Channel Warrior (Bridport, Dorset)

6 Oct 2013 by Stephen Wake

    Report on-board Channel Warrior

None stop fishing today for Andy and the postmen from Chard who managed to fill the cold box with bream Pollock and a bass, the bigger bream were kept, all smaller ones returned also 3 species of wrasse, dogs and some large pout. The biggest bream went to James Viney on a whole squid intended for a cod. Tried an inshore wreck the lads tried various artificials, although the wreck was showing bass on it they would not take the artificials, other boats that were lucky to find a few mackerel and fish them live did get some bass. At last the bass are turning up now. In the coming weeks now I will target them
Tight lines and good fishing to you all

9 Oct 2013 by Nigel Lihou

    Report on-board Optimist

A good day out on the 9th Oct to some inshore wrecks looking for Bass we were not disappointed as several made it to the surface along with Pollack, Pout, and a lone Scad. We also have evidence of shark as only the head to the gills of a Pout made it to the surface with a nice sharp bite mark where the rest of it should have been. Look forward to seeing you aboard the Optimist soon.

Hi all, well we did our last Shark trip in the diary Sunday (6th Oct) and Steve Chivers managed a 50lb to start the day and finished with a very nice 95lb Blue both on 12lb line ||| Its been a very good season with nearly 190 Blues being caught and released from Force Ten this season with the best estimated at 132lb.
Bottom fishing is still good and Force Ten is available throughout the Winter period (weather permitting).
The Diary for next years Shark season is already looking quite full so get your dates in now rather than leaving it to chance in the new year | That's all for now, Cheers, Pete

    Report on-board Channel Warrior

4 hour trip with Richards crew from Burtle, we were joined by a pod of dolphins which are always a pleasure to see they were right beside the boat you could almost touch them but they did stop the fishing dead for an hour or so. We set off again to hunt out some bream and managed to find a dozen or more along with a couple of bull huss, cuckoo wrasse , scad and more than enough mackerel, all in all a very pleasurable 4 hours every one went home with a good bag of fish
