    Report on-board Predator

A recent trip along the jurassic coast with a crew from Thames Valley Police produced some great ray action. Pictured here is Sid with a fine 13lb specimen. After a quick photo the fish was returned to fight another day. It was hard luck for organiser, Pete, who lost a big bass on the surface before yours truly could get the net!!

  • 13/09/2010 Fishing Report by Thomas Lessels on Bessie Vee (Mevagissey, Cornwall)

13 Sep 2010 by Thomas Lessels

    Report on-board Bessie Vee

My name is Tom Lessels, 53 years old, I travelled from my home in Stonehaven, on holiday again in June to Mevagissey (for the 6th year in a row) to fish on Dave Hunkin's," Bessie Vee". Wreck fishing for Conger, Pollock, and other species. I had 5 trips out this holiday during June along with other regulars and holidaymakers I have met on previous years. After stopping off for mackerel on route he anchored-up over a wreck where I landed 8 Conger all together. This was the best number of awsome quality fighting eels in one day ( 16 June 2010) for me so far, ( all catch-and-release). I was exhausted each time but was kept revived with cups of hot tea and verbal abuse from the 'galley-boy'.(Skipper Dave).
On another day he took us over Pollack, some big double figure fish which kept diving back into the wreck until you eventually gained control, lost a few stonkers when I had failed to slacken my reel drag sufficiently. Jelly worms( Dave's secret colour), Red-Gills and Sidewinders all worked.
I have had three personal best wreck species, Conger, Ling and Pollack all with Dave, all qualifying for the Shimano Badge. He picks different wrecks each trip covering several at distance, weather permitting, each time.
These trips with Dave set me up for handling bigger fish and eels, and a good variety of species when I go to various other venues. I have had great tips for rigs, experience of handling quality fish which have improved my performance in the competitions which I fish annually through my work.
After the trips on this holiday I went back home 'charged-up' with enthusiasm for the sport. I fished on 28th August 2010 in the Police Sport (UK) National Boat Championships 2010 at Stromness, Orkney ( see the report on the Police Sport UK website ). I won both the individual Champion and Species Trophy (12 species) against more than 100 competitors. If my head was not big enough already I fished next day, 29th August 2010 in the Scottish Police Boat Championship also out of Stromness, I manged to bag both joint winner and species position along with Keith Wilkinson from Ross-shire. I could not believe my 'Donald-Duck' two coveted titles in two days. It was better than a grand slam. It is incredible that I gained my experience on Bessie Vee in the far south west of our British Isles only to travel to the north east extreme corner to hook-a-win. An awesome year for me, one I will never forget. I will be back on Bessie-Vee next year for more action and to hone my skills and get a good slagging off from the knowledgeable and great Cornish Skipper.

    Report on-board Flamer IV

FLAMING FLATTIES - Dave Metcalf,Roger Buttle,Steve Wells and Kevin all from Sussex enjoyed a days plaice fishing on Flamer III that will rank as one of their best ever. The signs were not good with a realy small tide and an easterly breeze blowing which normaly does not help the fishing. But fishing being fishing the rule a reason book went out the window and they had a brilliant day, this is what makes my job interesting and keeps a challange up for the anglers. As I always say every day is different in the fishing world.Lots of plaice were caught up to 7Ib including two six pounders and 5Ib plusssers along with 4 to 5 pounders.Steve Wells caught 12 including several personal bests and he put back the six pounder he caught.Roger Buttle also had a six pounder along with 4 to 5Ib fish. But the biggest was caught by Dave Metcalf a thumping 7Ib plaice which is Daves personal best.Dave is pictured with his big spotty.Kevin chipped in with some 3 to 4Ib plaice. The successful bait on the day was ragworm and Ammo black lug cocktail tipped with a squid strip.

15 Aug 2010 by Sam Cumming

    Report on-board Silver Spray II

The neap tides have fished well on some of the inshore wrecks south of Poole. It has not been uncommon to see 20 – 30 congers in one session along with plenty of good sized tope on the slack water. One such day saw 18 snakes and 16 tope brought to the side of the boat in just a few hours along with a nice Pollack for one of our younger anglers Nicolas Barlow.
Mackerel are as plentiful as ever this year with scad and garfish falling to the feathers as well. Using the mackerel for bait the grounds at Dancing Ledge and in Poole Bay have provided excellent reef fishing. With most of the bream moving to the offshore wrecks for the autumn it gives the hard fighting rays a chance to get to the baits. We have seen all 5 main species of ray with blondes and undulates being the most abundant.
Bassing is well under way now with double figure fish not uncommon on a spring tide. One trip to the isle of white waited until the last two drifts to give up the goods with 3 fish weighing in at 7lb, 9.5lb and 10lb on live mackerel, proving that persistence does pay off. Freelining is also throwing up some very nice bass with the biggest 10lb 9oz falling to Taylor Anderson

AMMO BAITS COMPETITION - Ian and Michelle from Ammo frozen baits joned Flamer III for the day and brought a variety of baits for the anglers to use in a species competition with the challange being that only the Ammo bait provided could be used.Drift fishing was done first over a reef and produced many red,tub and grey gurnards along with scad, mackerel, pouts, garfish and poor cod. Then a session drifting for flatfish using Ammo black lug tipped with squid strips lured some plaice and dabs with Ian catching a plaice him self. Two sessions at anchor then followed seeing some good size black bream being caught the biggest of 4Ib landed by elder statesman Mick Nunn with the successful bait being small pieces of Ammo mackerel.Dog fish, pollack, pouts,Thornback rayand more gurnards were also caught during the anchor sessions.Ian and Michelle also sponsored some trophies and prizes for the day which I know the lads and me greatly appreciated.Andy Coillings won the competition with 234 points.Best fish award - Mick Nunn 4Ib Black Bream. BLONDES R'US - a morning session at anchor produced a hectic time with blonde rays and two bonus turbot.Dodgey Dave Barton started it all of by losing what could only have been a big blonde, they certainly hang on in the tide and test your tackle to the full,he later made amends catching blonde rays of 21Ib and 19Ib 8oz.Wayne Frapple joined in with blondes of 13 and 18Ib.Peter Collings landed a 15Ib blonde followed by his first ever turbot weighing 9Ib.Not to be out done Peters dad Andy landed a 20Ib blonde and his first ever turbot which weighed 6Ib 8oz.The Irish contingent in Donald and Billy weighed in with four blondes up to 19Ib.A few other smaller blondes were caught before all to soon the tide picked up and with the wind increasing it was time to move from the mark. All the blonde rays were returned back alive.I must mention Paul Milkins who must have wondered what was going on as he was the only one not to get a blonde.Dodgey Dave Barton is pictured with his 21Ib blonde. The successful bait for all the fish was Ammo squid and fresh mackerel fillet cocktails mounted on pennel rigs.
