The Drift Lines
Sunday the 15th August and the Prince of Wales Sea Angling Club are on-board the Lady Godiva for an inshore fishing trip,
The forecast is for 15mph North Easterlies becoming 10mph North Westerly by midday, the plan is to do a mixed day of Bass, Bream and Turbot fishing and so we set off for our first mark to catch some Mackerel for bait, after 35 minutes steaming we arrive at “The Arial’s” a mark just west of Portland that usually holds good numbers of Mackerel, We soon realise that the wind is quite a bit more than the predicted 15mph and after landing sufficient bait fish I decide to switch to Plan B and motor down to the Cove end of Chesil Beach to find some shelter from the wind,
As we approach the Cove I see that my good friends Colin Penny (Flamer III) and Ivan Wellington (Top Cat III) are already at the mark and drifting for flatfish, my intentions are to anchor the mark for the Black Bream, Gurnards, Smoothhound, Plaice and Dabs that we have caught here on recent trips,
I can see that Colin and Ivan are up on the sandy area and so I drop my anchor on my usual mark which is right on the edge of the reef, within a couple of minutes I receive a phone call on my mobile from Colin who says, “Now look here Gibbo, what’s your game then anchoring up in ‘My Drift Line’”, he continued “ I just said to Ivan “look at that cheeky bugger Ivan” (all in jest of course) So I replied “I haven’t anchored your drift line Colin, I have anchored on my mark which is well off ‘Your Drift Line’”,
Colin then says “what you hoping to catch there then Gibbo, I ain’t never anchored up here” I replied that he should try it sometime as the Bream fishing is particularly good, “Oh Okay” he says, “Good luck then”,
30 minutes later and Colin is back on the mobile, “How much lead are your boys using then” he asks, “6 or 8 ounces I reply”,” is that all” says Colin, “yes” I reply “if you anchor on the edge of the tide here you don’t need much more than that”, “What you catching then” he retorts, “Black Bream, Gurnards, Mackerel and Dogfish so far” I reply, “hmmm, I might come and join you as there ain’t much doing here on the drift” and sure enough Colin positions Flamer III about 200 yards to the West of us, another 30 minutes go by and I notice Ivan has also anchored up about the same distance to the west of Colin so it’s my turn for a moan on the mobile “Now look here Mr Penny, what you doing blabbing to Ivan about my mark then”, Colin replied “Well, I didn’t exactly blab I just answered his question about what I was catching and when I said Black Bream he said he was on his way mate”
15 minutes later and Colin is back on the mobile, “Here” he says, “You lied to me”, “What do you mean” I replied, “We ain’t caught any Gurnards yet” he chuckled, “That’s because your lads are not fishing it right” I retorted, Colin went on, “There’s one bloke at the back of my boat who is banging out the Bream”,
After speaking to Ivan who tells me that his lads are also “catching” I notice that the wind has suddenly dropped and so we up anchor and push on out to the Portland Race for a spot of Bass fishing, this was a bad move as the Bass had just “Gone off the Boil” as we arrived and after spending a fruitless hour trying for a Turbot on the Shambles bank it’s time to head for home, on the way back to Weymouth harbour Ivan rings me to say that his lads had caught quite a few species on ‘The Drift Lines’ including Bream, Gurnards, Congers and Rays,
I must admit that I stumbled upon this mark by pure chance when I was out with a group of school kids and after quickly realising that they were struggling with the drift fishing for flatties decided to “Chuck it and Chance it” on the nearby reef, they had a great time at anchor and it just goes to show that sometimes we do get fixed ideas about where and when we fish certain areas.

Hi all,
A while since the last update. Fishing has been going from strength to strength inshore. Good numbers of Bass have turned up with some nice fish amongst them, keeping us busy have also been the bream with flattys from the Shambles still making an appearance.
We have also found some fantastic Blonde Ray fishing on the neap tides which I recommend you come and have a go at!!
This months fish of the month must go to John Ellis with his cracking 18 1/2lb Undulate.
MY DIARY IS NOW OPEN FOR 2011 SO IF YOU FANCY A TRIP WITH A DIFFERENCE THEN GIVE ME A CALL.

Summer Bream Fishing
The Black Bream fishing has been spasmodic of late with some boats anchored up on the muscle beds reporting good action whilst others in close proximity having poor catches,
The best solution for this scenario is to ensure that you get some big smelly baits down on the seabed as soon as the tide allows, this will produce a good scent trail that will bring various species to your location including your target species the Black Bream,
As soon as you have the Bream feeding beneath the boat they will usually stay put until the tide slackens and then the boat will usually swing away from the mark as the new tide starts to run, If you are not planning on moving location then you would do well to get some more big baits down to get the scent trail working again but make sure your tackle is strong enough to hold a big Conger , Bull Huss or Tope as it is at this state of the tide when they often make an appearance,

RAYS R'US - Graham Latimer age 51 from Eastbourne with his son Darren and four friends joined Flamer III for two days Ray fishing and were not dissapointed.Over the two days numerous blonde rays were caught along with one spotted ray.Four bonus turbot were also landed during the trip.The biggest blonde ray of the trip was a twenty pounder caught by Nick Rye.Darren Latimer caught his first ever turbot.But Graham landed the best turbot which weighed in at 14Ib.Graham is pictured with his big turbot.The successful bait for all the fish was whole clamari squid and mackerel fillet presented on pennel rigs.The lads enjoyed themselves and have re booked for two days in August 2011.

Sunday 1 st August produced 10 species of fish from the local banks and reefs from Berry Head down to the mouth of Dartmouth.
Most anglers were inexperienced but all enjoyed the thrill of catching fish they have not seen before.

Sunday, 1st August.
As some of the inshore wrecks are being overly frequented, took 2 hours to steam 30 miles looking for ling for this group. Slack water was at mid-day, so we managed to have time at anchor despite the fairly big tide.
Anchoring for the last of the flood-tide, fishing was quiet with two or three small ling and a couple of conger (with quite heavy loss of tackle)!
Things improved greatly on the ebb, with 30 fish caught, the best of which were ling at 26 and 24lb. All congers were returned successfully. We finished off the day with a few handy pollock on the drift, having managed five hours of fishing on a nine hour day. View Boats Page

JULY Report for FLAMER III - the reefs produced plenty of black bream,bull huss,congers,rays etc.The mussel beds good for plaice and black bream.The Shambles Bank was consistent for turbot,brill and occassional plaice.A few bass by the east and west Shambles Buoys area.The offshore wrecks slowed up but still produced pollack,ling and the odd cod.42 different species caught on Flamer III so far this year.Flamer Fish of the Month for July was awarded to Simon Darligton for his 9Ib Brill.Simon is pictured with his brill catch.

26 miles from Mevagissey harbour today, to treat the boys to some deep water pollack. Caught a few ling and two conger on the slack water, with no success drifting, so we moved to another wreck where the pollack and cod were feeding.
Andy Woodford, the best of the eight anglers fishing, managed to land twelve pollack and a cod, and also the best pollack of the day, an 18lb - er. Everyone caught pollack, between 6 and 14lb, and half a dozen small cod, the best of which was 11lb.
All in all, a successful day, and well worth going a few extra miles! View Boats Page

Took nine anglers 20 miles out into the Channel for a day trip looking for pollock and cod today. Good numbers of pollock, though no great size - the best reaching 10 - 12lb. Better cod catches, and surprised by a blue shark which took the bait on the way down. After two laps of the boat, we managed to get it alongside just long enough to see it before it parted the angling trace!
All the boats sharking today managed to catch, top boat being the Swallow from Looe, with four, two of which reached 100lb!
We saw a blue yesterday on the surface, so it seems like they have arrived for summer. View Boats Page

We have now finished our Alderney trips for 2010. The fifth trip was one of our best for the variety and quality of fish as well as the excellent weather. Day One: Wrecking our side of the channel was slow with only a few pollack in the boat and a bucket of mackerel. We finished up on a wreck about an hour from Alderney with plenty of nice pollack up to 14lb on live mackerel on the drift. A bonus fish was a nice John Dory for Johnny Grummet. A quick anchoring session produced an 80lb+ conger for 76 year old Stanley Adams from West Brom. Day Two: Drifting for the turbot and brill proved a winner with around 20 fish on the boat for the day along with a 15lb blonde ray. Day Three: Another day on the drift for the turbot produced a 17lb angler fish for Jonny Grummett along with another 9 flats amongst which was an equal boat record turbot for Alex Miles at 23lb. Day Four: A fast and furious session on the cod on the way home produced plenty of double figure cod mixed in with some large Pollack, an 18lb ling and more congers on the slack. All in all an amazing trip for everyone. We are looking forward to Alderney in 2011 and will start planning in October.
From Poole the wrecks are still fishing well with good numbers of cod, pollack and ling showing. Fishing at anchor has matched this with plenty of congers, tope to 50lb and blonde rays. The bass fishing has been slow but we managed increasing numbers on the last spring tide on the offshore banks. Freelining live mackerel off the Purbecks has produced a number of larger fish with the best so far an 8.5lber for John Ellis from Swansea. Evening reef trips off the Purbecks have produced some good bream around 3lb as well as bonus undulates, congers and smoothies.
We are now looking forward to sharking in August with our first fish being hooked a lively 100lber which dropped the hook after 5minutes including a pass of the boat. Bass fishing should reach a peak with 10lb+ fish on the cards. View Boats Page
