Report on-board Flamer IV
WRECKING TRIP PRODUCES BIG COD - with an early start several wrecks were fished and a steady catch of pollack and cod in the 4 to 9Ib bracket were caught on a variety of lures. The tide picked up and with it the fishing slowed right down.So I moved to a big wreck that I beleive is not fished to often and with the thought that as the tide was now giving a drift speed of 3.1 knots we would be over wreckage longer and give the lads a better chance of catching fish in the fast tide run.Sure enough my hunch/descison proved to be a correct one as plenty of reasonable size pollack up to 13Ib were caught along with some big cod.Dave Barton started it off with a 17Ib cod then Glenn Barrett landed a cod of 18Ib 8oz this was followed by a few smaller cod in the 14 to 15Ib range being landed. In fact Glenn had a day to remember as he caught fish on almost every drift.Glenn is pictured with his 18Ib 8oz cod.

COME ON YOU SPURS - an anchor session to the east of Weymouth produced some excellent spurdog fishing along with some smooth hounds. Almost instantly as the whole calamari squid and fillets of Ammo mackerel landed on the bottom the action started.Lots of spurdogs weighing 13Ib plus were caught including a monster landed by Dave Barton who is known as "Dodgey Dave" which weighed in at 19Ib 8oz which was his personal best and beat the Flamer record by 2Ib.Dave is pictured with his big spur.A few good size smooth hounds were also caught with Robin Amor landing a common smooth hound weighing 16Ib 8oz which was his personal best and again a Flamer record 3Ib bigger than the previous record.

PATIENCE REWARDED - Ray Seddon and crew on their first trip aboard Flamer III and were up for a 10 hour Flatty trip.As I always do I warned them that with flatty fishing it can be a case of being all or nothing but the fish are there.Several hours passed and no plaice were caught and then no turbot but they all concentrated and kept trying. Then in the last two hours seven turbot and a plaice were caught. It was if some one had thrown a switch and told the flatty's to feed.So Rays crew now know that what I said all or nothing regarding flatty fishing is very true.I was so pleased to see them catch as they had been so patient.Dave Beales is pictured with his Personal Best turbot weighing 14Ib 8oz which he caught on the last but one drift of the trip.

DEVON BOYS GET THE FLATS on FLAMER III - Brendon Franks and his mates from Devon came out on Flamer III for a 10 hour flatty trip and were not dissapointed. The first two hours were spent plaice fishing on a mussel bed and was very quiet for a hour and a half then three plaice in two drifts were caught which included Brendon catching his first ever plaice.Christopher Hann on his first ever flatty trip and using borrowed tackle landed an excellent plaice weighing 6Ib 4oz,very good for your first plaice.(Chris is pictured with his big plaice). The successful baits being ragworm tipped with squid strip.A move to the famous Shambles Bank for the afternoon drifting session saw Chris at it again were he landed two turbot with the best one weighing 8Ib 8oz.Not to be out done totaly his elder brother Steven landed a turbot weighing 14Ib. Several more turbot were landed during the afternoon all on mackerel strip baits with some being tipped with squid a strip as well.Needless to say the Devon boys enjoyed their day out on the flatty's.

Finaly the summer arrives, the sun comes out, the sea goes flat and the bream turn up. I had Malcolm McMaconell and his party from up on the Humber out Saturday and Sunday. They thought Saturday was good, catching bream to just over 3lb. Sunday was better, again bream to just over 3lb, over 120 between the 6 of them, Malcolm had 42 himself. Brilliant fishing with a good bunch of anglers who returned the majority of female and smaller fish. Roll on the rest of the summer.

Report on-board Silver Spray II
Well Spring arrived at last with some calmer, warmer weather. The bream arrived in numbers about two weeks later than last year. We have had good catches from rock marks in Poole Bay with the best fish between 2 and 3lb but plenty of medium size fish to keep rod tips rattling. Colin Jones from Gloucester had 23 fish to 2lb 8oz at the end of April. The first good catches of bream have been made off the Purbecks and our attentions will switch there during May and June when we will be looking for 4lb fish.
The turbot fishing on the banks has been excellent. On the banks off Alderney we had good numbers of turbot to 10lb. Many of the smaller fish were returned to fight another day. There we some nice brill with best a specimen of 6lb 8oz being caught by Neil Harrison form Wantage. The Shambles is also fishing well and our boat record was pushed up to 23lb by Robin Holloway with superb fish that nearly 4 inches thick. This was one of 7 that day.
Offshore we have had plenty of Pollack on the wrecks with live sandeels providing the best sport. The good news is that there are early signs of cod both on the wrecks and on the brittle star grounds. We expect the catch rate to increase over the next few weeks. Conger fishing has also been excellent with our best a fine fish of 70lb.
The mackerel have now arrived in the Bay so that’s a sure sign that summer is on the way. We are looking forward to our first bass trips both drift the offshore banks with lures and live baits and also freelining with live mackerel on the Purbeck reefs. Offshore the numbers of cod will increase on the brittle stars and the tope will start to feature in increasing numbers.
Our revised website is now up and running. There are videos, a new notice board and easy links to our blog, facebook and U-tube pages. Facebook is updated by Sam and he would be glad to have you as a friend of Silver Spray.

Report on-board Supanova II
Well guys since the last report allot has been going on in Weymouth! The plaice season has pretty much been and gone with mixed results. But some nice fish did turn up along the way. The wreck fishing has continued with some fantastic sport with the first few cod of the year and first bass of the year. The pollack action has continued steadily along with the occasional ling. The inshore fishing has seen the arrival of the mackerell which has meant some nice fresh bait for the hunting of the prized turbot which have prooved more than obliging over the last few days. Fingers crossed that the action will continue over the coming months and thank you to all who continue to support me and Supanova in her first season in operation, and also to supporting Weymouth. We skippers to understand that times are a little hard but apreciate everybody that comes to the town.
Hope you get the biggun!!

Report on-board Silver Spray II
The banks fishing off Poole has continued to be excellent with good catches of blonde rays and spurdogs. There have also been some nice cod and congers in the mix as well. Over the last weekend James Howarth from Christchurch decided to have a trip afloat instead of his usual carp fishing. He managed 2 spurs the best of which was weighed at 20lb before being returned alive. This fish was very close to the Wessex record fish of 20lb 7oz which we caught on the same mark last year. James mate Tristan added a 12lb cod so that there was something for supper! Our best blonde ray this month was a 24lb caught by Greg David from Wantage.
When the weather has permitted we have ventured up to 40 miles offshore to fish on the wrecks. There have been good numbers of Pollack caught on artificial lures. Dave Faulker had a cracking fish of 17lb 8oz on a blue sidewinder. He followed it up with a 13lber on the next drift! Kelvin Hindmarch from Overton had a great ling of 29lb on a wreck 20 miles to the SW of Poole. We have only just found this one and it has tremendous potential for congers which seem to be everywhere on the ground around the wreckage. The best congers this month have reached the 50lb mark but there are bigger ones to come.
The first bream have been reported and numbers are expected to increase with the warmer weather. We are also expecting the turbot fishing to take off soon.
