Report on-board Our Joe
2018 Fishing Report from Shaun Pedley, OUR JOE-L . . . Well, where to start?
The first full year for me as a Full Time Charter Skipper, running the Our Joe-L and organising the Fishing Holidays with my family.
The Fishing.
I'm not going to lie here, at times it has been slow throughout 2018 but I'm confident I made the most of the different year we've had on the wrecks. The hottest water temperature for a long time saw the Black Bream arrive in numbers towards the end of the year! The Lads who have been sharking have seen big numbers too and we've also spotted Tuna jumping on more than one occasion. Now, back to our fishing.
I started the year mainly drifting on the wrecks, seeing some nice Pollock caught offshore and the occasional Cod. We fished a Plaice Festival on a weekend in April and had a number of catches weighed in. Not quite a match for the local Skerries Bank residents that produced some nice fish, though I've been working on that throughout the Summer and we will be back in 2019 for the comp!
We had a good time in May & June fishing inshore on the wrecks. On most days we caught more fish inshore than when we pushed offshore, so knowing the inshore marks was key for the beginning of the Summer! The Skerries Bank had also started to pick up, with the number of Plaice and Turbot caught rising all the time. Whilst on the lookout for some new spots, we had a couple of fish other than the usual Pollock and Cod with Coalfish, John Dory, Red Gurnard, Tub Gurnard and Bass! One to remember for another time then!
With a couple of Black Bream caught early in July, I had a feeling we were in for a good year on them. We had a fishing holiday in August who wanted to target them specifically, so off we went on the hunt to follow up Dad's reputation of catching lots of Bream! On day one we caught none - what a start, time for a rethink! We tried some different baits and I picked a wreck that I had my eye on all year. Bang! A number of decent sized catches in a couple of hours, the biggest up to 4lb7oz. Kevin won't let me forget that one in a hurry! With everyone aboard happy with their catches and the best of the Bream tide gone, I decided to use the remaining time of target Cod. Same wreck, but a different strategy of drifting on baits and lures. A few catches around the 6-8 lb mark to round off the day. The rest of the week was much the same on the reefs and wrecks.
Moving on to August which was a cracking month for Conger! A couple of specific Conger Charters from our regular guys who fish for the British Conger Club (BCC) and many competitions, On the day it was Essex Boys vs Devon Boys! Being a Devon Boy myself it was hard not to be one sided, although the Essex Boys smashed it! Catching a 66lb half way through the day was enough to win a BCC Silver medal, what a result! Our eldest fisherman proved to be the wisest too, as he spent more time hooked onto an Eel than off! We quickly lost count on the number of catches and a shame the weather called off the next day. We had planned an experimental day having fished well the day before, but that is mother nature for you!
In September we fished in the annual Torbay Fishing Festival. The usual crowd booked our hotel and fished with us for all 9 days. The usual target for us was Conger and Bream and when tide wasn’t favourable, Pollock and Ling. I'm proud to say we won trophies on all 4 species over 100%, narrowly missing out on top boat by 1 fish. After winning 8 prizes in total, it was a pleasure to see our fishermen at the prize giving.
The Dartmouth Fishing festival
Unlike the rest of 2018 the weather was not playing ball and we called off day 1. Day 2 made anchoring up on the wrecks a no go, Pollock it was then! With only 3 guys fishing they all caught a dozen Good Pollock each and all weighed in there best. Biggest Pollock on Day 2 was ours at 15lb. Day3 Saw again similar conditions but we all agreed on a strategy to catch one Eel big enough. Knowing nobody else would have anchored up in this weather that would be all we needed for a winner. It took all morning drifting over the wreck having a nice sport of bass fishing to wait until the conditions were as good as they could be. 3 re anchors and an hour later the short rods came out and heavy leads went over the side, right on the sweet spot. I said to the lads that we won't be here long in these changing conditions so best baits and sharp hooks on please! With 4 caught in half an hour and one big enough to take for the weigh in we picked up the anchor and headed for home. Enough of that. Well we did get beaten for the Pollock on day 3 but Paul managed to walk away with a nice new Conger rod and a trophy for the best Conger of the weekend. Job Done.
The Boat was safely out of the Water the next day for a good winter refit and will soon be ready for 2019. I’ve heard the lads are having a nice spot of Cod and whiting inshore and the winter Pollock are starting to show in sizes. This is a really good sign for next year already.

Report on-board Mistress Linda / San Gina3
After a week of gales yesterday offered a weather window, the day was always going to be difficult as it was a very good friends funeral which at the appropriate time a 2 minute silence was observed for him. The bites started immediately and carried on all day even through the hardest part of the tide with plenty of Whiting, Dogfish, Pout and more Congers. The sea was remarkable calm after all the weather we have had and it was lovely and warm a real pleasure to be out there. As the tide eased we landed 2 lovely Bass falling to Kim and Wayne and the Whiting size increased. Again the next few days are a washout but keep looking at the weather and as soon as it calms down I will be going I have spaces most days so if you fancy a trip please call and I will do my best to get you out on the day of your choice.

Due to the series of strong winds we have endured for the last few weeks fishing has been very limited and I have earned loads of ‘brownie points’ at home. When we have managed to get afloat the fishing has been good with plenty of Whiting ranging from small to medium, lots of Conger Eels up to 12lb many not much bigger than a common eel which bodes well for the future, the usual dogfish, pout and the odd ray but as a bonus some quality Pollack have been caught with the latest falling to Mark Turner using light tackle aimed at Whiting weighing in at a respectable 13lb. The Cod have yet to arrive but the other fish will keep you on your toes with an average of a fish every other drop. If you are available and fancy a trip please call.

Fishing Report by Sam Cumming
on Silver Spray II (Poole, Dorset)
Nov 2018 by Sam Cumming
Report on-board Silver Spray II
Although the weather has limited the amount of trips we have done over the last month we have managed a good variety when given the opportunity. All the excitement from last month’s shark trips encouraged us to have another go which proved very fruitful. Tony Lees boated is first porbeagle shark weighing around 200lb, the fish fought for an hour and a half and as usual was returned unharmed to terrorize the bream for another day. We figured we had had our luck for the day until 1415 when we started to catch a few small mackerel on feathers by the surface. Within five minutes of putting one of these tiny things on for bait we had our second run. After getting all our other gear out of the water it became clear just what we had hooked into as an enormous thresher jumped clean out of the water 100m behind the boat. After a couple more jumps, one of which we caught on camera and you can see on our Facebook page, and 3 more hours we managed to get the boat alongside the fish as it swam along at 6 knots and touch the trace to confirm the catch. It’s tough to estimate the size of a creature like that as it’s the biggest thing I have ever seen on rod and line by a long way. The anglers and I all agreed it must have been between 500 and 600lb. What a monster. Also on our last shark trip Karston Murray landed not one but two Atlantic bonito at the same time on feathers whilst fishing for bait. A first for us on Silver Spray. Elsewhere the bream fishing on the offshore wrecks seems to be getting better and better with just a short session over slack producing a good 50+ fish to 4lb. Inshore the winter fishing has begun with the first cod and whiting hitting the deck along with some early season spurdogs as well. Although the weather hasn’t been great for them we have managed a couple of goes for the squid with some success as well. Over the next couple of weeks we shall just be inshore focusing on the cod and also some drifting for bass.

Fishing Report by Kevin McKie
on Size Matters (Plymouth, Devon)
Nov 2018 by Kevin McKie
Report on-board Size Matters
We would just like to say a massive thank you to our sponsors Shimano UK for all there hard work helping us get Size Matters fully kitted out for 2019!!
Shimano fishing tackle is top quality and regarded as the best in the world.
If you want to compete at the highest level you need fishing tackle that is reliable and won’t let you down when your anglers are hooked in to a fish of a life time.
Here is a look at what we have on offer for any of our anglers to use free of charge onboard Size Matters.
For drifting the wreck’s with lure’s and targeting Mersey Cod/Ray’s, we will be using the new Vengeance AX Slim 20/30 rod’s.
These rod’s are ultra light in weight and have the action of a light 20lb class.
They will be teamed up with Torium 20s and 30s reel’s in both right hand and left hand retrieve.
These reel’s have a strong drag system, perfect for pulling in rays and cod in a strong tide or for pulling up big Cod, Pollock and Ling from a deep mid channel wreck.
For anchoring the wreck’s targeting monster Conger and Ling.
We will be using the new TLD 50lb class all roller boat rod’s teamed up with TLD 20A twin speed multiplier reel’s.
This set up is perfect when you need to use 1lb to 3lb leads, fishing deep water mid channel wrecks for those big snakes.
For Shark fishing we will be using the new Speed Master Dendou-Maru 1000g boat rod’s.
(If you get chance check these rod’s out they are not designed for shark fishing but you won’t be disappointed it’s a real gem).
Teamed up with Tyrnos 30 single speed multiplier reel’s.
This set up is perfect for fishing baits suspended deep down and at long distance from the boat.
We will also be using two spinning rod’s and reel’s for some fun when the sharks are quite happy to take baits off the surface very close to the boat.
Rod’s will be the Speed Cast Kaibutsu 120g
and Saragossa 10000 fixed spool reel’s.
For the big Skate in bonny Scotland we be using the new Tyrnos 80lb class all roller boat rod’s, teamed up with the Tyrnos 30 twin speed multiplier reel’s.
Last year we where using 50lb class tackle for the skate and some fights where lasting up to 1 hour 45 minutes in the strong tide in over 500ft of water.
This time using heavier tackle should cut fight times down and be much better for both the Skate and Angler.
For the big Six Gill Sharks and an other sea monsters we manage to catch.
We will be using Tyrnos 80lb class all roller boat rod’s and Tiagra 80W multiplier reel’s.
This set up is perfect for when you are hooked up to a fish over 500lb using a harness and holding on for your life!!
We also have the new Ocea Jigger multiplier reel, this is one of the best reel’s I have seen for UK wrecking on the drift using lures.
The only problem is they are only available in left hand retrieve to the UK.
We are currently trying to get them in right hand retrieve from the USA.
The perfect rod for this reel is the new
Speed Master AX Slim 20/30 boat rod, ultra light with bags of power if you really need it.
Please note we do not keep all this tackle onboard Size Matters, if you would like to use any of it free of charge you need to let me know at least 24 hours before your charter.
Any losses of damages to any tackle must be paid for in full before leaving the boat.
From January to December 2019 we will be giving away a Shimano Hoody, T-shirt and Cap worth over £70 to one angler each month.
You don’t have to catch a big fish to win it, all you need to do is impress us.
You can do this by catching a PB,
or by catching something a bit special,
or even just be a novice angler and show us how much you have enjoyed your day fishing with us.
The skippers decision on the winner is final in this free competition.
Roll on 2019 because
SIZE REALLY DOES MATTER!!!
Thanks
Kevin Mckie
