  • 11/2017 Fishing Report by Lyle Stantiford on Supanova II (Weymouth, Dorset)

    Report on-board Supanova II

Well I have been hopeless with reports this year, it's been manic old year, please accept my apologies.

How has it been i hear you ask?????? Well in all honesty its been a pretty tough season all in all, expectations were high but at times it has been disappointing. Little glimmers of Brilliance but they didn't seem to last long enough to be reliable.

The early wrecking season was good with good catches of Pollack and then a fantastic month of ling on the small tides, the best I have seen for in excess of a decade. At the end of the Ling we would expect the Cod to arrive but they just didn't seem to appear in any great numbers, they are one of those cyclical species so we weren't too perturbed as usually the lack of competition for food means the Pollack will home back in on the wrecks for the summer months. Unusually they didn't which made for a tough old time wrecking wise in June and July.

As the summer rolls on our usual attentions turn to the inshore fishing and this has been our saving grace this year that's for sure. Fantastic sessions on the anchor have seen ungulates to 18b, Blondes to 28b, Toe to 50lb, Huss to just under 15lb, More congers than you can shake a stick at and the real saving grace for the summer Autumn has been the outstanding Black Bream fishing both inshore and on the Wrecks. I don't think I have ever seen a year with more Bream over 4lb than this year.

The Banks have fished steadily for Turbot and Brill throughout the summer/autumn but the majority have been small with a few better Brill of late. I have been focussing some time on a little Mark I have been fishing the last few years for Turbot and Brill and while you don't see loads of fish the quality has been good so I hope to spend a bit more time at it next summer.

The Channel islands has been very poor on a whole. A couple of early trips weren't too bad and the later trips were actually pretty good with a good mixed bag. Good Bassing, amazing Bream, Couch's included, a run of flats and some monster Tope. I'm not too worried however as it has been bad before in my early days and what followed was the best fishing anyone has seen over there. Fingers Crossed for 2018.

Competitions this year have been very successful, The conger comp was a huge success and we finally managed to win it with a fish of 73lb For Rod Adamson to take the title over the three days.

The 5 day WIBAC (Weymouth international boat angling challenge) was once again a huge success with anglers coming from all over Europe to battle it out. Winner after the 5 day multi discipline was Jon Law from wales who walked away with a cool £3000 for his efforts. Once again we were on a roll and Managed to clinch Top Boat for the week.

The support to us all here in Weymouth has just been superb this year and exciting opportunities lie ahead for us here. We thank all who continue to support our wonderful port and long may it continue!

    Tight Lines,

    Lyle

Well the weather has been very hit or miss for a while, one minute blowing a gale then a run of 2 or 3 days with no wind.
We have managed to put to sea several times in the last couple of weeks and the results have been very good.
Lovely plump Pollock and some Cod putting in an appearance, and tighter inshore out of the wind we have had some superb days on the Ray and Plaice.

Looking forward to hopefully some settled weather arriving so we can get out and get some " Biguns and Whoppers"

Also its been a emotional few weeks with the loss of one of our great friends Alastair Finch who sadly passed away. RIP dear friend

    All the Best

Another cracking day of anchored fishing on a Bank and a Reef which produced some good fish which included Tope,Turbot,Undulate Ray,Black Bream,Bull Huss,Conger etc. I have fished this particular bank three times lately and each time we have been beaten by what must be realy Big Blonde Rays and I can't wait to back and try for them again. Tim Goble landed two Personal Best's with a 40Ib Tope and a 13Ib 4oz Undulate Ray.

As the summer species depart it is good to see the arrival of the Channel Whiting in good numbers and excellent quality for this early in the season. London based angler JJ bought his family and business partner for a day out and boated many good Whiting and several other species. As a bit of fun we went squid fishing for the 1st time not really knowing how to fish for them and as the sunset over the harbour we started to land a few and we only managed to get ‘inked’ once which caused a laugh , as the darkness drew in we kept catching squid and ended up with 1/2 a bucket full not bad for our 1st attempt. Join me on these trips and enjoy a day afloat fishing amongst good company.

Top trip for last month was certainly our final trip over to Alderney for the year. I've always liked going across the channel this late in the season, providing you can get a bit of favourable weather, the fishing is never disappointing. Day one saw a decent enough session at anchor on a wreck for congers and bream, unfortunately no ling this time around which was disappointing as we had plenty the week before. Day Two started off with Bob Hall's couches bream double header, the most we have ever had on the whole boat for the day is 2 so this was something special. The catches continued throughout the day however and we ended up with 19 couches coming to the net, including ten for Ian Napier who was just hoping to catch his first one on this trip. Plenty of hard fighting black bream of varying sizes were caught by all throughout the day mostly returned for next year. A manic session on the anchor saw tope up to 50lb, bull huss, more bream and even a bonus plaice (only the second one I've ever seen in Alderney). Day Three started off with a few hours on the banks which produced half a dozen flats, tub gurnards and cuttlefish, nothing massive but we have had worse days than that this year. Then off to anchor up a big rock mark which was very productive with huss, bream, congers and plenty more big tope. To round the day off we did an hours breaming back by the island, a slow start turned into a frantic half an hour with the bream taking anything you put down there. Average size was way up on the previous day at around 3lb. Bob Hall had the last say of the day with a couches bream and black bream double this time. Day four and the weather unfortunately turned for the worst and we were faced with a small neap tide against 20 knots of westerly. The prospect of swinging round and round the anchor rope all day didn't appeal so we headed back across to Poole Bay to finish the trip up in calmer waters. Out of only a handful of mackerel the lads managed 6 small eyed rays, 1 undulate, 2 smoothounds and would you believe it a 15lb 4oz turbot!?!?! All the time we have spent steaming around looking for those flatfish far and wide and we catch the biggest one of the year right on our doorstep. That’s going to be a tough trip to beat. We are now taking bookings for Alderney 2018 so drop us an email for a list of dates. info@silverspraycharters.com

Poole continues to enjoy some excellent Plaice fishing in and outside of the Harbour with fish being caught to 4lb along with plenty of Garfish action, local angler Keith set a new PB when he landed an Octopus in very shallow water. Last weekend we ventured out to the wrecks in search of big Black Bream and hoping to see a Red Bream, drifting over the wrecks proved fruitless but once at anchor the fishing took off with Bream to 5lb 4ozs coming aboard all day until the tide got going again, over slack water Tope came on the feed. Sadly we did not see a Red Bream. Soon we will be heading out seeking those big winter Cod, if you would like to join me on one of these trips please call.

  • 11/10/2017 Fishing Report by Malcolm Collins on Just Mary (Christchurch, Dorset)

11 Oct 2017 by Malcolm Collins

    Report on-board Just Mary

Hi All, as we head swiftly into Autumn and beyond into Winter I would urge my Anglers to watch www.windy.com to see the constant low pressure systems that are thrown at us from across the Atlantic. In my humble opinion it will become a case of taking every opportunity that is offered to us to get out to Sea, there will be many days when we are to remain on the mooring unable to venture out. So if the Skipper says, 'There's an opportunity to go fishing'..... then get off your backside and go ! You cannot plan ahead for good days and your booking may well stand a good chance of being cancelled and rebooked.....maybe several times. So my message is simple, if an opportunity arises then get on 'Just Mary' and come fishing, the good days are sure to be outnumbered by the bad days when it comes to the opportunity to get out to Sea.....ta Malc.
