    Poole July 2017 Report
The weather has seen some unseasonal highs and lows ranging from record high temperatures to excess rainfall and lightning storms which has affected the fishing dramatically. Mackeral were being caught in reasonable numbers have become very hard to find and we are having to rely on frozen baits as back up, at this time of year we should be catching enough to put some by for the winter months not draw down on our stocks. The wreck fishing has been very poor this month with a few Pollack being caught and hardly any Cod. Now the Bass ban has been lifted allowing an angler to retain 1 fish per day some very good Bass have been caught, Carl Hurren landed a PB Bass of 10lb 2ozs in the Swash Channel on very light spinning tackle whilst Plaice fishing. Ray fishing has continued to be excellent and working in conjunction with the Undulate Ray Project we are now seeing repeat landings of the same fish in the same areas. Further inshore and within the Harbour some very good Plaice fishing has been experienced with up to 50 in one session most are on the small side but for one angler from Romsey fishing on board Mistress Linda using a tiny bit of worm as small Bream were devastating the baits landed a Plaice of 4lb. Along the beaches there are lots of small Bream and Gurnards and as a bonus the 1st Trigger fish has been caught by Martin Bailey near Durley Chine weighing 3lb. One species for the boat this year was a fine Cuckoo Ray caught during a Lymington Club comp the fishing was very hard.

    Report on-board Silver Spray II

I'm writing this month's report from the hotel on Alderney as we couldn't get out to sea today due to strong north-easterly winds. It seems like the last 2 weeks have all been pretty similar, although we do have more shelter in Poole Bay than most places so we are still able to get out. First trip out to target the bass after the ban was lifted on July 1st was met with some tough conditions with both the tide and the weather not in our favour. We fished for about an hour before the stiff westerly picked up and the tide dropped away, fishing was successful on the lures in that time with plenty of smaller fish taking the tronix lures wound quickly up 10 turns and back down. As usual the bigger fish fell to the guys who stuck with the large live baits. Kelvin Hindmarch's new PB hit the deck at 9lb 12oz and is still our biggest of the season so far. The cod are thin on the ground out in the channel with the last 2 trips only producing 3 each but we are still getting some good pollock and the ling are starting to show more frequently. We should see the first of the big wreck bream soon on certain wrecks, could this be the year we see another one over 6lb? Back in the sheltered waters of Poole Bay the variety of fish available is amazing with most trips producing at least 15 species. Plaice brill and turbot are coming to the net both at anchor and on the drift. Rays and tope are in abundance now with undulates being the most plentiful. Packs of 20lb+ male tope roam around about 12 miles out and are providing excellent sport when we can get to them.

    Report on-board Channel Warrior

A steady flow of good size black bream are now coming aboard, this should get better now over the next couple of months. Mackerel are still a bit hit and miss, one day good next day can't find enough for bait and exactly the same thing with the plaice.
Todays adventure started off very slow but after midday the wind dropped and the sea flattened out a bit and the bites came on good and strong.
    Tight lines to all Steve

  • 07/2017 Fishing Report by Ross Parham on Spot On! (Brixham, Devon)

    Jul 2017 by Ross Parham

    Report on-board Spot On!

July has proved to be somewhat a difficult month at times for wrecking with mainly small pollock and some nice ling up to 26lb to keep the lads entertained.
Cod are very few and far between with a few fish being seen every now and again up to 8lb

Skerries has been fishing well for plaice finally with good numbers of fish coming to the boat.

Highlight so far was our first Sharking trip of the year which attracted 12 blues to be boated with 3 others lost.
Biggest fish was 105lb with 3 sharks on at once it was safe to say a good hectic day at times.

A recent wrecking trip saw porbeagles taking pollock on every other drift so always worth a go to target these I think soon.

Plenty of black bream over guernsey for Spot On also but turbot and brill have again proved very difficult at times.

Plenty of bass also on the wrecks around Lyme bay.

Hopefully mackerel will eventually turn up for us so we can give conger a go in the next month or so.

Pictured is the 3 sharks all booked and boated at the same time.

Brixhams only charter boat to catch and land these sharks and brixhams only catamaran taking you where others can only dream of!!

2018 diary open and 130 days already booked so be quick!!

  • 09/07/2017 Fishing Report by Philip Higgins on Mistress Linda / San Gina3 (Poole, Dorset)

9 Jul 2017 by Philip Higgins

    Report on-board Mistress Linda / San Gina3

After a good week catching Rays and some of the best Mackeral fishing I have seen for a couple of years last Sunday the crew opted to go out of the box, it was originally planned as a wrecking trip but due to the low numbers of fish caught offshore we decided to drift for Turbot and Tope in new areas to us, 1st drift produced a fine Brill of around 5lb and a few Tope so we ventured further south to a flat open mark that produced another Brill of 6 lb and more Tope. This was a gamble that we all think with a little time invested would produce more 'flats' closer to Poole than people imagine.
    All the best
