    Report on-board Spot On!

September was yet another great month for weather and the fishing did not disappoint as Spot On travelled to Weymouth for a 3 day fishing trip, day 1 fished the wrecks on the way over across Lyme bay were we caught Bass and Pollock the biggest Bass going 7lb 12oz then we headed for a few drifts off Portland where we managed just 2 bass and both small so returned, a last couple of drifts over the mussel beds when the tide turned produced some great plaice with the biggest going 4lb 8oz.
Day 2 was straight onto the mussel beds where we again picked up some more plaice and small bream, a great Plaice of 5lb 12oz.
Day 3 we started off on the plaice before the tide became too strong and we headed home via a detour to some mid channel wrecks were we hit into some great action of Pollock and Cod.
The guys for the second 3 day Weymouth trip changed there mind and decided to head across the channel to Guernsey and I must say what a great decision, the wrecking on the way over was superb with lots of double figured Pollock, a few cod and ling. The banks produced bass and turbot although none huge still good numbers, but the trip was made when we landed on a great little Bream mark where it was as soon as we hit the bottom the bream were biting and we ended up with great sport, again lots of small ones to be returned and a few bigger specimens kept for the pan, alongside this we found jumbo mackerel and garfish to complete the trip.
Hats off goes to Gordon of Manor angling who has been trying for 60 years to catch a Turbot and he managed 7 in one day.

Skerries trips have been producing some mixed bags with Blonde rays still showing strong, a couple of plaice touching the 5lb mark have made some great catches for the banks.

Wrecking has started to produce larger Pollock and a couple of sporting Coalfish have also made an appearance.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Brixham and Spot On and I look forward to seeing you all again soon and beating more PB's for you all.

Pictured is Terry with his fine Skerries Plaice of 5lb

Spot On is now proud to announce the sponsorship of TOP RIGS who supply many great rigs to most tackle shops across the UK, so some great end tackle available for you on board.

27 Sep 2014 by Nigel Lihou

    Report on-board Optimist

Trips over the last few weeks have consisted of mainly half days to the local inshore wrecks where anchoring over the wrecks has proved to be more successful this year than drifting across the wrecks. We have had a variety of species come aboard if you can get through the masses of Pouting there have been Pollack, Silver Whiting, Some large Scad, Bass, and some very large Mackerel. This weekend we had four guys down from Burnley who fancied a run out to the Skerries for some Flatties. Some really good drifts down the seaward edge of the bank produced some good Plaice and large red Gurnards but with two rods out each and one baited up for Ray and Turbot I would have expected to see a couple of these aboard but it was not to be, we still had a good day on the Plaice with one member of the group catching his first ever Flattie. Optimist is staying afloat throughout the winter in the hope that unlike last winter we can get a few days good fishing in, Give us a call to see what's available weather permitting.

  • 25/09/2014 Fishing Report by Adrian Cawte on Lillie May (Beer, Devon)

25 Sep 2014 by Adrian Cawte

    Report on-board Lillie May

    25/09/2014.

We set off from Beer just after 08:00 with five of us fishing, clear skies and a light wind.

A few hundred yards offshore we stopped for about fifteen minutes to feather for Mackerel to use as bait with everyone catching. That done the skipper, Paul took us a couple of miles out and we anchored over a reef on the falling tide.

My first cast brought in a Dogfish and not long after another angler, Marcus brought in a nice sized Gurnard.
From then on, the Black Bream started hitting our baits and they were coming aboard at a reasonable rate.

It took me a while to connect with one but while I was waiting I landed a Gurnard and a nice Thornback ray.

During the middle of the day on slack water, a shoal of Mackerel moved through and were taking the baits meant for Bream on the drop and on the retrieve. We all changed to feathers and had ten minutes of fast and furious action as we hauled in the fish, most hooks being filled on every drop.

That over, we went back onto the Bream. The action quietened down over slack water but there were enough knocks and the occasional fish to keep everyone interested.

As the tide swung in the early afternoon, the wind got up and pushed the swell up the channel. This made for some interesting fishing as the boat pitched but more importantly, the Bream were showing again with more regularity with everyone on board landing fish and I got four on board within about an hour and a half.
The fish were taking small slivers of Mackerel on small hooks. I think we were all using three hook traces with the bottom two hooks taking the fish.

Eventually good things come to an end and with conditions becoming ever more choppy the decision was made to head for the shore because it was fast becoming difficult to stand up and keep tackle boxes and gear from sliding around. On the return we again stopped for Mackerel but none were showing.

At the end of the day (between the five of us) we landed about 25 Bream weighing in between 1-2lb, 4 Dogfish, 3 Gurnard, a Thornback, countless Mackerel but more importantly we all had a thoroughly enjoyable day with fish showing continuously all day.

Many thanks to Paul for a great day and I think we will all look forward to a return trip very soon.

20 Sep 2014 by Simon Fisher

    Report on-board Becca Marie

September has been dominated by eastly winds which on some days made fishing difficult, we also cancelled a fair few trips during the Torbay Fishing festival due to the weather as saftey and comfort of our Anglers is most important to us...... That said we have had some calmer days and on these the fishing has been great.
Again we`ve been targeting Ling and have had some great sport on our 10hr trips, seeing plenty of Quality Ling coming to the net. Aswell as Ling we`ve even landed Conger on the drift......
The Pollock are still coming up when the tide is running but as yet still no massive fish but nice table size of 5-8lb. Cod are also still about and we are planning individuals trips to target these late sept and through out till Christmas before the boat is taken out...... We plan to be out for January and back in for Feb ready for the monster Pollock. so anyone wanting trips during the winter months dont hesitate in contacting us.
We also have some Individuals Wreck fishing for Bass coming up............hope to see you onboard soon

    Report on-board Becca Marie

Well August will certainly go down as the Month of Ling......... Plenty of Ling caught this month. The Cod are still there but now are smaller, but the bigger ones will show up hopfully the end of sept /oct.
The Pollock are now on the increase too and showing signs of feeding on Sprats.
The Deeper Wrecks are providing some great catches along with a nice variety of species.....One nice suprise was an Atlantic Bonito, a real sign the water is warm....... The Skerries continue to fish well although we have only done a handful of trips there this month, but all have produced a great number of Plaice.
Still dates available next month so check out our calender.......

  • 24/08/2014 Fishing Report by Nigel Lihou on Optimist (Brixham, Devon)

24 Aug 2014 by Nigel Lihou

    Report on-board Optimist

    20th, 23rd and 24th August 2014
A few good trips this week, first off a half day reef fishing, but not a lot there so moved to an inshore wreck where a good amount of fish Pollack, Pouting and Whiting were brought aboard, with everyone having had some good sport. The 23rd found us with Father and 2 sons fishing a wreck about 10 miles out again Plenty of Pouting with Pollack and Whiting mainly on strips of Mackerel, lunchtime found the wind force increasing so a move to an inshore reef was favoured with catches including Bull Huss, Lesser Spotted Dogfish and Conger Eel being boated and returned. The day ended with a drift for Mackerel. The 24th was a half day with a family group introducing the youngsters to fishing. Anchoring over an inshore wreck proved a good move as we had a variety of species and some good fishing with the youngsters catching well, Species included: - Mackerel, Lesser Spotted Dogfish, Pouting, Silver Whiting, Red Gurnard, Small Pollack, and Thornback Ray. Everyone had a good time and caught fish returning to Port vowing to return
