    Report on-board Silver Halo

Fishing has been really good the last couple of months and I've found a good run of pollock to keep my clients busy while the bass slowly arrive.
Lures and jigs have been used to great effect and I've just too many pics to upload so I've just done a select few! Please see my facebook page and group for more regular updates and reports.
So I hope the pollock fishing remains a good option, but I'm also expecting larger numbers of bass to start holding on our inshore wrecks, allowing us to fish with lures, jigs and occasionally live baits a bit closer to home.
I've been using some new jigs and lures that have done really well and these are currently available onboard for my clients to purchase.
I also have good lure and SPJ rods and reels for clients to use, these are included in the charter price.
Silver Halo is affordable as a private charter so its worth considering that as an option.
Please see my availablity calander, the unspecified days are usually available for either individuals or complete boat charters.
    Many thanks Matt

6 May 2023 by Matt Forrester

    Report on-board Silver Halo

So despite some pretty challenging conditions April was a good month onboard Silver Halo.
I managed 11 wrecking trips and with only small groups of between 2 and 4 anglers per trip, catches were reliable and numbers good. Best pollock went just over 16lb and most anglers had 15 to 20 fish a piece come the end of the day. A few cod were also caught but I'm expecting better numbers for May and also the bass will soon make apperance on wrecks in our area.
Most anglers have used lures (greens and whites being best) but there have been occasions where jigs have been used. The lighter winds and more settled months to come will see an increase in the use of jigs. Please get intouch if your interested in my charters, also please check my main website for heaps of info and some SPJ tips and tactics!!
    Many thanks Matt. 07970 176604

  • 31/10/2022 Fishing Report by Shaun Pedley on Our Joe (Paignton, Devon)

31 Oct 2022 by Shaun Pedley

    Report on-board Our Joe

2 BRITISH CONGER CLUB GOLD MEDALS CAUGHT IN ONE DAY (97lb 14oz & 86lb) AND WINNERS OF DART FISHING FESTIVAL ! ! !

Fishing aboard OUR JOE - L with a group of anglers, mainly members of the British Conger Club. The main target? Conger Eels!!!

The weather didn’t help for the first couple of days as we were forced into staying inshore to fish the Skerries Bank for Rays although we had a great number of rays the best fish was only a blonde of 21lb. This gave us a great opportunity to stock up on bait for our main event on the Wrecks.

The forecast was looking good until the night before when about 12-15 knot’s of east wind over a small flood tide was looking inevitable for the day. Setting off from the River Dart in the early hour darkness to fish through the night and catch the ebb with the wind instead.

The lads were baiting up and I dropped anchor as Paul Cashmore reminded me that he and Kevin Turner had entered the British Conger Club Interport competition for the day. Now that has been known to curse the days fishing for plenty of conger fishermen in the past as you only have one day a year you can enter this.

After Our Joe - L settled at anchor I was confident the positioning over the wreck was right and the lines were falling away in the tide at a comfortable trajectory. Bait, Location & tide were bang on and I suppose the angers weren’t half bad either so the boat was filled with confidence from the off. First bite was a small conger released at the side followed by Paul Maris smiling and saying “I think you’ll need the net for this one Shaun!”
Me with the brand new net in hand we all saw a fine eel surface after 2 or 3 dives pulling 20lb of drag on Paul's Shimano Talica II speed Reel. It took two of us to lift the net in and with the fish now on the deck we all smiled and said ‘That’s the one we came for!’ and only the second eel of the day.
After a bit of breakfast, a couple of cups of tea and a bit of T-baring smaller eels off for me. Kevin Turner was into another half decent eel that surfaced along way from the boat and dived down again. A shorter run than the eel of Paul’s but this fish was pulling faster for sure. Kevin done well to stop the fish going too deep for a second time and on the second surface we could clearly see this was bigger than Paul’s, who up until now thought he had the biggest of the year for the BCC (British Conger Club). With Kevin’s rolling out of the net onto the deck of Our Joe - L you could see the size difference and was looking close to the magic 100lb!

As the tide eased it was time to up anchor and move to fish for ling and bream on the drift with slightly awkward conditions. We started our drifts on the second wreck and another boat came over to drift to but with the lads all having a bit of a break I thought we should shift inshore to give the tide time to turn for another go at some eels If we could settle at anchor. So far we had a couple of decent eels for the Dart Fishing Festival for Kevin & Paul M and also Kevin and Paul C were half way to a good score for the BCC interport with Kevin’s Eel, weight yet unknown.

Dropping the anchor with a small flood tide against 15knots of wind I said to the Anglers, you’ll get a couple of short windows of fishing before we’ll swing off and I will have to reposition the boat again. During the 3 windows we stayed Paul C managed to hook and surface a half decent eel of 42lb that got released at the side of the boat. Job Done!!!

    Results time.
The anticipated weigh in time with plenty of interest in our two fish boxes came. Paul Maris Personal best eel for the year going 86lb and winning ‘Best Fish From Wreck’. Kevin Turners personal best Conger going 96lb 14oz winning ‘Best Fish overall’ ‘Best Conger Eel’ and ‘Best Fish of the Day’ as well as smashing the Best Eel so far in 2022 for the BCC by 25lb! This also confirmed the combined weight for Paul C and Kevin’s interport entry going 138lb 14oz. Happy Days.

Credit goes to the Anglers, they put their faith in me as a Charter Skipper when they book ‘Our Joe - L’ and this group always fish as a team in these competitions. Everyone aboard was happy to be on the boat when these fish were caught which as a skipper makes things a lot easier. Well done to Paul Maris & Kevin Turner on this occasion for hooking a couple of magnificent eels and thanks to Steve Batchelor at Stainless Steve engineering for making up the Conger Net at short notice after my last one broke. With one of his excellent nets aboard, a gaff really is a thing of the past!

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️ WHAT A DAY ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Bumper weather along with BUMPER fishing.

Today saw Spot On and it’s crew head out in lovely calm conditions and glorious ’summer’ sunshine.

A couple of wrecks in and and BOOM! It was on, the quality of the fish was very good with lots of double figure prime pollock coming in for the lads every drift.
The day was safe to say great with everyone aching and plenty of fillets for all.

Biggest fish fell to Tim Phillips with a fine specimen pollock of 16lb 4oz.

This was a trip that will be remembered that’s for sure! ️

A big thanks to #sidewinderlures once again for there deadly Skerries eels which did the damage today that’s for sure.

NEXT BREAK IN THE WEATHER AND WE GO AGAIN.

  • 03/2023 Fishing Report by Matt Forrester on Silver Halo (Torquay, Devon)

    Mar 2023 by Matt Forrester

    Report on-board Silver Halo

So after a year out it's been good to get back to my boat Silver Halo and into the fishing in the UK.
Since being back I've been busy readying Silver Halo for her 5th coding and survey so much of March has mostly been work off the water, but now we're ready to fish and it's all down to the weather!
I've only managed to get out 3 times so far, fishing the wrecks with lures and jigs with mixed results but generally very positive overall.
We've had an amazing half dayer and two tougher full days, both with strong winds against tide, still some positive results with pollock to 18lb and cod to 7lb. Lots of smaller pollock are close to the 8lb mark but we've had a few bigger fish.
Most fish taken on the large green Sidewinder Skerries eels, other favourites have been the smaller 4" version, white and the black glitter Sidewinder sandeels. I also have a new set of jigs that I'm trailing over here and so far I've tried 2 patterns, 1 failed the test but 1 has passed with flying colours!! More time now needed to test the others.
Please keep an eye on my face book page and group for trip updates and short notice spaces, many thanks Matt.

  • 21/02/2023 Fishing Report by Andy Bridson on Patricia Rose (Plymouth, Devon)

21 Feb 2023 by Andy Bridson

    Report on-board Patricia Rose

    2023 Winter Season
We took advantage of this year's lack of fish in Jan to get Patricia Rose out of the water. She's due her 5 year MCA inspections and recoding, so some serious investment went into her. Shiny rebalanced props, rudder, and rope cutter upgrades, including new hydraulic lines. She's been back in the water now nearly a month and back to finding some quality fish over this tricky time of year. There's still some great Blonde Rays around despite commercial pressure for the smaller tides with high 20s still being caught. Your other option on small tides now is to look East to the Skerries for Plaice, Turbot and Ray action. Inshore can be tough this time of year but for those willing to try, we've still had Pollok to 16lb and double figure Cod. What people want from the offshore wrecks is hard fighting Pollock and in 220 foot these fish certainly test your gear, biceps as well as your angling skill. Check out our availability calendar for details and WhatsApp me when you are ready to book or want more info. As ever tight lines. Andy, Patricia Rose Charters Ltd

  • 09/04/2022 Fishing Report by nick smith on Lillie May (Beer, Devon)

9 Apr 2022 by nick smith

    Report on-board Lillie May

Its been a long time since I fished Beer, and i I was really looking forward to the whole Beer experience, from launching off the beach to being hauled back up on your return, it really just adds to the day. not to mention the fishing can be something special here, and you just never know what you might hook into.
Anyways the plan was to fish as light as possible with most of us hoping to fish with our LRF set ups, which we managed to do for most of the trip, stepping up from the normal 2 - 5g lead heads to using 20g weights to a couple ounces which the rods could easily handle but which made the fishing really hands on....and so much more fun when you get a fish...bait used was squid, mackerel, herring, sand eel and rag worm.
Have to admit it was a rather slow day, due in part to me picking too small a tide, and the dreaded bloom already in the water, but we carried on and it wasnt long before the banter was interupted by Ian jumping up as his rod bent over, this was followed by the usual questioning of "what is it then bud?" from all the other's, along with "cor your milking that dogfish mate," Then George called out he could see colour and it looks very breamy.....and we could not believe it, the first fish of the day was a lovely looking black bream.
Now we had the fish biting, and we started working on the species count...dogfish, whiting, grey gurnard, smoothhound, conger, black bream, and the then George caught something special, infact it was the main reason we had returned to Beer as it was the only place I had ever seen them caught, we had thought it would be too early for them but George called out he had a fish on and it was a male dragonette, and In my opinion the best looking fish we have in our waters, it would look more at home in a tropical sea than our cold water's.
For the last hour of the trip we steamed back inshore and had a drift over the sand to see if we could find any plaice, but it wasnt to be and before long it was time to call it a day and bring up our gear for the last time.
I am back out there again in a few weeks time with more trips booked up for later in the year, big thanks to Paul and look forward to fishing with you again soon....

  • 20/09/2021 Fishing Report by Barry Cox on Lillie May (Beer, Devon)

20 Sep 2021 by Barry Cox

    Report on-board Lillie May

REPORT FOR BBCSSAC TRIP 20TH SEPTEMBER 2021:

Bait ordered in advance from Seaton Tackle Shop at £5 per quarter for Rag Worm. Worm in excellent condition dug from Poole with farmed worm.

All anglers arrived at Beer in good time, met by parking attendant and paid the £5 all day fee and boarded boat and set off by 0800hrs in glorious sunshine, mist and light Northerly winds. Stopped once on way to fishing mark to feather for mackerel with no fish caught... decided to cut the feathering short to get to the reef.

Fishing was patchy to start with but with decent sized Black Bream coming to the boat. Dave had the best Black Bream early on with a 2lb 10oz fish.

Lots of small bites but not the ‘plague’ of scad and dogfish we had last year. Fishing down to Low Tide at 11:49 produced a constant fish count with good sized Black Bream and sizeable Mackerel.

Several Conger Eels were brought to the side of the boat for release estimated at 5 to 7lb.

The highlight of the day was a new Club Record for Guy, a Red Mullet at 1lb 9oz, 0.7087kg, it is a 104% record for the Angling Trust Area C Boat Specimen Weight which is 0.68kg.

As the tide picked up after midday the bites increased with in size Black Bream coming to the boat in a steady pattern.

Paul gutted everyone’s catch before heading back in shore. An excellent day’s fishing, perfect weather, great company and fish for the pot.

David’s Black Bream was 74.9% specimen weight. Guy landed a good sized gull which after a good sized peck was released.

As the Boat Competition for 2021 has been postponed due to the impact of COVID-19 no total weights have been recorded.
