    Report on-board Size Matters

2019 has once again been one hell of a year for Size Matters fishing from three ports around the UK.

Here is how the year unfolded onboard
    Size Matters.

    SCOTLAND

The Skate fishing from Scotland was truly outstanding at times, we totalled 641 Skate for a total weight of 80,617lb!!!

We averaged 9 Skate a day with the average weight of 125lb 8oz!!

At times we would have four Skate on at once, trying to get them all to the boat in over 600ft of water was challenging at times but we managed it.

442 Skate where female and 199 were male, we caught 44 over 200lb and 359 over 100lb!!

The biggest Skate was caught by Wirrel angler Mick Walsh a cracking fish of 232lb!!

Bert Willams from the Wirral caught the first ever Blue Skate in Scottish waters all 22lb of it, this is an exceptional catch in UK waters.

The most Skate we caught in one days was 37 for a total weight of 2790lb, by Garry Streeter and his lads from South Wales.

The Liverpool A Team consisting of Phil Riley, John Owan, John Mcbride and Paul Hendrick, had the most weight in one day with 20 Skate for a massive total weight of 3590lb!!

The best part about this is all the Skate are out there swimming around to be caught again in future.

We did manage to get two the wrecks a few times and some of the wrecks held massive shoals of Pollack to 9lb, we will be doing much more wrecking in Scotland in the future.

2020 is fully booked in Scotland but we do have dates available for 2021.

    PLYMOUTH

When we arrived in Plymouth around mid June we done our first trip of the year to Jurassic Park, catching no less than 12 Six Gill Sharks to around 500lb, the biggest we boated measured and released was 410lb and the smallest was 145lb!!!

That was definitely a trip to tell the gran kids about in the future and a trip that we will try to beat in the next few years.

The wreck fishing on the drift was good from June to the start of August, once the algae bloom started to die and sink to the sea bed the fishing was very hard.

Wreck fishing at anchor for Conger and Ling was slow in June and July due to the lack of fresh bait available, but in August and September the fishing really picked up with up to 70+ Conger and Ling per trip.

Sadly we never caught any big Conger this year our best fish was 55lb, we did catch some monster Ling this year to 39lb 8oz a new boat record.

Shark fishing was very poor from June to July because of the massive algae bloom we had, I got told by a marine biologist it was the worst algae bloom in 10 years, just goes to show how polluted our oceans really are.

Once the algae bloom started to die and sink to the sea bed in August the shark fishing picked up a bit with our best day catching 19 Blue Sharks on a 23 hour trip and 11 Blue Sharks on a 12 hour trip, this is still very poor compared to previous years.

In July we had big plans to go well off the charts but sadly the weather put a stop to that so plan B was to try for Thresher Sharks.

We managed to pull it out the bag catching three Thresher Sharks to 150lb, pulled the hook on two more and missed one!!

This was the 7th species over 100lb caught onboard Size Matters in UK waters.

It was great to do a trip like this for the first time and learn so much in just a short space of time.

It was definitely a very strange season in Plymouth not like any we have had in the last four years, the algae bloom didn’t help things either.

We only seen a few Sunfish this year, in the pasted I have seen 17 in just one day.

There was no Atlantic Bonito this year and last year you could catch them daily in September and October.

We only caught one John Dory this year and last year we caught 11.

This was the first time the wrecking fishing on the drift was over in August normally you can still chip away catching Pollack, Cod and Ling right through the year.

From the start of August the weather got more unsettled as the season went on, we had so many good trips booked in but the weather put a stop to them.

Even sailing to Liverpool we normally do some fishing on the way but the weather window was too small so we had to do the 360 miles none stop.

2020 is fully booked from Plymouth and we only have a few individual places available in 2021.

    LIVERPOOL

We arrived in Liverpool around mid October, we decided to target the off shore wrecks when the weather allowed and fish the Mersey as a back up.

The wrecking was fantastic catching plenty of Pollack to 11lb 8oz, most where 4lb to 7lb.

The Mersey in October to the end of November was full of Rays to 10lb, Whiting to 1lb 8oz and upto 20 Cod per trip to 9lb.

As we went into December most of the Rays and Whiting moved off shore, this increased the Cod catches up to 39 per trip.

We have available dates in 2020 for the Mersey and Wrecking.

Once again we have some very big plans for 2020, we just need the weather on our side and a bit of luck.

We would to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors Shimano UK, everyone who fished with us and helped us out during 2019, we appreciate the continued support.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

    Report on-board Patricia Rose

As well you all know, this time of year you fish the weather not the tides. Yesterday we had a poor tide but a small break in the horrendous weather of late so we were fortunate to welcome another new crew aboard Patricia Rose. The crew travelled down from London for a corporate team building day out and needed 8 rod hires, bait and some instruction. I picked up some good quality rag worm from Sea View Angling and added some squid and mackerel to the mix. I also added crab scart and chunked sandeel to a rubby dubby bag and we avoided the worst of the wind over tide in the morning by putting the anchor down on the river in the hope of a codling or few. While action was constant, the novice crew had mostly Whiting which happily went well into keeping size. Lunchtime came and we went for a change of tactics hitting the species around the famous Plymouth drop-off. They bagged some lovely live baits and other species and then we pushed out into the building sea state to an offshore reef. Big quality white fish were in short supply but they were kept busy until the drive home beckoned and we steamed back in.

    Report on-board Silver Halo

Well the summer came to a miserable close with a continual steam of bad weather systems! Just the period from the start of August right through to mid November has lost me approx 50 bookings so it's been pretty painful!
On the few days I have got to sea the fishing has been mostly good with some good bass fishing to be had. The biggest so far is only 9lb but Im hoping to better that before the end of the year.
On a more positive note we had our first Bluefin Tuna. The fish took about 1hr 20 mins to beat and was estimated at around 280lb. A real test of every ones skills onboard and a thing of real beauty! I'm sure this is to be the first of many!!! I should point out that the fish was released without being removed from the water and swam away in a good healthy manner.
Please get in touch for more info and to get booked in, thanks Matt

FISH THE WEATHER NOT THE TIDES!
Hello again folks, this weekend we were blessed with some favourable weekend weather for the first time in a long time. We had a club booking for the South West UK Armed Forces Club on Sunday but like all clubs , they were struggling to get guys to commit so I agreed to cap their costs, add some individual regulars and run the weekend as an individuals weekend with a special offer of 20% off for those individuals that wished to fish both days. Three of my anglers decided to do this so got two days afloat for £80. Saturday started lumpy and the overnight Strong Wind Warning did little for everyone's confidence when I picked them up at 0700. We went back to a great little live bait mark which was holding perfectly sized Joey Mackerel the week before only to find a pod of dolphins had also found the same mark. With limited live bait we went for it and had a good day hitting lots of Squid and a few white fish. One angler was keen to take home an eel for the pot so we took the unusual step of boating and killing a 38lb eel which he took home to chop up into steaks. Regulars to Patricia Rose know my Conger recipe is to boil it for 3 hours in a bucket of stones and then ditch the eel and eat the stones. :-) The wind and conditions improved all day and we had a great ride home at 18 knots as the sun set in the West, the lads cleaned up their fish and the boat and got back at a sensible time for the drive home.
Sunday was a different day again starting like a mill pond allowing us to bang out the miles and hit some of the Eastern inshore reefs and wrecks. Before we hit the wrecks we had a bit of a reef drift and banged out a lucky Angler/Monk fish of about 10 lbs. As the tide dropped we went East looking for more of it and with not a lot of tide running it was always going to be hard work but we had a few half decent Pollack, lots of Octopus, Squid, Red Gurnard and the usual suspects. The wind kept us drifting at a half decent rate so we didn't anchor on Sunday. I'm sure the lads will remember the novice mistake of the skipper hanging onto a squid a second too long and getting a face full of ink while trying to lower it into a bucket instead of just throwing it. We came back across at the end of the day closer to Plymouth into a rain squall which combined with a lack of fish on our final mark just about put the final nail in the coffin. Still with a few tired lads after two days hard fishing the early finish was a blessing

  • 15/11/2019 Fishing Report by Shaun Pedley on Our Joe (Paignton, Devon)

15 Nov 2019 by Shaun Pedley

    Report on-board Our Joe

Winter Fishing from The Dart aboard OUR JOE-L has defiantly started.

Yesterday aboard OUR JOE-L, with a long awaited break in the weather and only a couple of keen anglers, we set off for an inshore wreck. It was enjoyable having all of the boat to fish just 3 rods but the boat needed a run and I fancied a crack at an inshore wreck I know fishes well in the weather that was forecast.

The fishing started pretty quick on the flood tide. Biggest pollock went 13lb 10oz to Paul Cashmore. Biggest bass was estimated at 4.5 - 5lb caught by me and was the first fish on the #Shimano Beastmaster 20/30, my Top Skipper prize from the Torbay Fishing Festival. Both hooked onto a Sidewinder Lures

Come lunchtime we had decent fish caught most drifts and 3 bonus small Bass to add to the fun.
With the tide turned and the wind increasing together, the fishing soon slowed slightly. We’d all had a fantastic morning fishing so I pointed the OUR JOE-L for the river dart and was alongside filleting the pollock by 2:30.

If only everyday was as easy as that >20mile round trip, life of a charter skipper would be so much easier.

Next trip planned for Monday 18th November.

Bookings now being taken for 2020 Fishing Holidays and Charters.

Torbay Fishing Festival 2019 sponsored by SHIMANO.

    The 51st Torbay Fishing Festival got underway early September. This competition is very well respected around South Devon and is widely regarded as the fishing competition of the year in the South West. With the fishing from the wrecks very difficult all year it was always going to be a different year for those fishing from the boats. The overall winner was won with a truly fish of a lifetime being caught from shore, a Garfish of 2lb 10oz scoring 238%!!! Still I managed to stick to what I knew (Wrecks) when the weather allowed and managed a fairly respectable haul of prizes aboard including 2 Top Prizes;
’Best Fish from Wreck’ going to Paul Cottel for a lovely 5lb 5oz Black Bream winning £350 plus a Shimano Tyrnos16 reel
‘Top Charter Boat Skipper’ Trophy, + Prize, winners plaque and bottle of whiskey, going to me, Shaun Pedley aboard my vessel OUR JOE-L with a winning percentage of 467%.

Other Prizes included ‘Second Best Conger Eel’ + Prize, won by Paul Cashmore with a Conger of 61lb (Also winning British Conger Clubs ‘Fish of the Month’. ’Best ‘Conger Eel by a Visitor’ + Prize, won by Kevin Turner with a Conger of 49lb also qualified for British Conger Club. Red Gill Trophy for ‘Best Fish Caught on Artificial Lure’ won by Allen Curtis winning a very honourable amount of Red Gill lures. ‘Charlotte Louise Trophy’ + Prize won by Kevin Turner. Plus 4 Day prizes for Best Wreck Fish Day 1,7,8 & 9 winning a Shimano Charter Special Reel
All Prizes this year won a Shimano Beastmaster Slim AX Boat Rod in various weights.

A Very memorable Festival for me personally as it is the first time I’ve won the Top Charter Boat Skipper Trophy. Not only do I now have the honour of my name being engraved on the trophy along with a very small number of truly great local skippers** This is also a prize I remember my Farther winning in 2003 and again in 2015 and I now have the pleasure in my name joining his on the trophy. I am only the second Skipper to be added to the trophy since 2010, as it is always won back by the same phew skippers year on year with most winning it 3 or 4 times between them since it started in 2002.

I would like to thank the festival organisers, committee, volunteers, weighers and all entires from locals to visitors as without you all we would not be able for fish and enjoy this wonderful festival.

Looking forward to next year already

    Report on-board Optimist

August has proved to be a great month for fishing on the wrecks and on the banks. We have had to travel some distance to some wreck marks known to us and have been rewarded with some good Pollack, codling and Bass including the one in the photo caught by Gus from Worcestershire on a 4in sidewinder eel, there are of course the inevitable Pouting (AKA Brixham Cod).

The Skerries is still producing some nice fish with a total of nine species in one day including Plaice, Blonde Ray, Red and Grey Gurnard, Dogfish, Mackerel, Scad, Pollack and Whiting. Testament to the Blondes is Caroline from Norfolk with a 10lb 11oz Blonde Ray, long drifts do produce the fish most taken on a cocktail of Rag worm, Squid and Mackerel.

The reefs are still providing some sport with Bull Huss and Small Conger with a few Pollack into the mix.

Considering it was so late in the season (Sunday 7th July) we had a fabulous day catching an average of ten fish each (Pollack and Ling). Dave is a wonderful Skipper, always finds the marks and always ensures we have a brilliant day. A huge thank you to the Crewman Simon who really looked after us throughout the day. We REALLY did not want the day to stop, it was FABULOUS.

Brilliant day on the wrecks over 25 mile out of Brixham unfortunately long run out and back but well worth it, some good Pollack even Codling the usual Pouting (AKA Brixham Cod) and a very lovely 7lb 2oz Bass, all taken on sand eel lures. Plenty of Bait fish showing on the sounder, but still some savage takes on the drop. Still spaces available for September.

  • 08/2019 Fishing Report by Ross Parham on Spot On! (Brixham, Devon)

    Aug 2019 by Ross Parham

    Report on-board Spot On!

With our first ever thresher shark trip unfortunately canceled due to bad weather and last weeks shark trip cancelled also, I was wondering if I was ever going to get to go shark fishing this year!

But the first shark trip of the year was certainly one to remember for all onboard Spot On!

The lads wanted to have a go for some sharks closer to home in the hope of catching a thresher that have been spotted regularly this year.

We headed out armed and ready. Once we arrived it was busy on deck getting the rubby dubby in place, rods baited and floats sent out in formation and we waited and we waited some more then the screaming run we wanted and I was lucky to have it on my rod so I picked up the rod and clicked the drag into strike on my pen reel and it was not slowing down, then into full drag and still not slowing down, I was thinking to myself this has gotta be my thresher as the line flew out horizontal as we were all waiting for the leap these fish are famous for but it didn't and it just kept running and running, pulling the boat around in circles with its strength.
The fish finally showed itself in typical pin wheel style and it was then we got our glimpse of the first Tuna to be hooked on Spot On! And the first for a Brixham charter boat.

We towed the fish alongside to remove the hook and keep oxygen over its gills, it was measured at 72". Making it approx 220/250lb. Fish released and swam away and it was back in formation and then John had a run resulting with a nice small blue shark of approx 40lb.

Later in the day again it was my rod screaming off again, I picked it up and the same as before but this was bigger and faster. I gave the rod to the lads to fight and went and started the engines. Twin engine outside controls made easy work following the fish as it stripped the reel of its 100lb braid.
Then the dives, the same as before so we knew it had to be another Tuna and it was, this time a massive 92" 400/450lb monster swam alongside us as we measured, towed, removed the hook and released to see this amazing creature up close and personal was stunning and the sheer power and size of these fish is immense.
Another run and number 2 blue shark of 60lb caught which took 2 baits but still did some great strong runs and put up a good scrap, one more dropped run and that was that, we packed up and headed home with memories that will last a lifetime.
I have some underwater footage on my go pro and awaiting some better pictures that the lads took for me so they will be updated in due course.

Please remember any BLUEFIN TUNA caught will have to be released at the side of the boat.

We did not set out to catch these fish and to hook 2 and land 2 in the same trip is astonishing.

I have emailed the Brixham MMO office and notified them of these captures and updated them with measurements.

Spot On is Brixhams premier charter boat and again another first for a Brixham charter boat. Not 1 fish but 2!

    2019 bookings being taken.
