    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

A couple of reports from us from our last two trips.
Sorry for the late one from 24.06 (the day before we left for Norway)
Must have been a bit giddy and forgot!

Nabeel Ismail, his Dad Zahim and family, joined us for a distance run out to the “Wall”
By no means a top drawer day but not too bad in the end.
Every drift over the grounds producing fish for the boys and enough for each and everyone to take some home for the table.
Young Fergus filleting all their catch on the way home.

A huge thanks to “Nabs” for the home made Biryani with Samosas etc. Absolutely stunning food. Can’t wait till next time mate!
    I’m salivating already!!

Yesterday saw our first day back at sea after our epic trip to Norway for a week of the most incredible fishing!

We chose the offshore route again as the tides were still running fairly high on a 5.3M

First couple of stops were for Mackerel with poor results. Just a dozen or so, so we headed off.

The first couple of wrecks produced poorly with around 8-10 fish from each of those.

We then had a run South East to some ground where there were a few more fish to be had for the lads, but again, not many.
Baited rigs proved the most effective on the day.

As the heavy rain showers approached we decided to chop the trip and headed back to port to catch the high water bridge opening.

Not a brilliant day on the fish, but as ever on the Shy-Torque, the banter was superb and everyone enjoyed their day on the water.

Kaspar taking the best fish of the day on the boat, which also won him the daily prize of £50.00 in the competition.
    Well done to him!

    Cheers for now.

    Rich

25 Jun 2024 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

I’ve struggled to find time to do a daily report recently, but the last three days fishing has seen a familiar pattern emerge each day for us.

All three days were spent fishing on Spring tides between 5.1m and 5.3m, not enormous, but certainly a quick enough drift to make for challenging conditions with a bit of breeze. On these size tides, the days are generally spent on a mix of wrecks around slack water and drifting rough ground when the tide was running.

The way the periods of slack water fell, meant we started each day with a couple of wrecks. It was noticeable, that as soon as the tide dipped, the fish started feeding well and we had a reasonable start each day taking Codling and Ling with a couple around the 7lb mark. Slack water was quiet each day, then as soon as the new tide bent through, there would be another feeding spell until the tide built up to full speed.

Each day, once the tide was at its peak, sport literally stopped. The fish were there, but clearly just weren’t feeding. Over the three days we’ve fished rough ground at 3, 5, 7 and 20+ miles with very similar results.
We kept on the move during these periods, trying different areas and lines, but we had meagre pickings, with just an occasional odd fish. Thankfully on Sunday and Monday the second slack periods also delivered a few nice fish to end the day, which was great.

Tactics wise, it was the “Whitby usual”…Muppet traces baited with Squid and/or Mackerel for the wrecks. Baited Hokkai’s on the rough ground. Shads were tried a couple of times, but not with much consistency. My son William accompanied us on Sunday along with Grandad. He’s caught on rough ground plenty of times, but on Sunday he had his first go at wrecking fishing. He landed (on his own) his first Ling from out of the wreck at 4lb 8oz, so it was a proud Dad moment for me! He’s only 11 and it was a battle royale all the way up.

A huge thanks to all the anglers who’ve been out with us the last three days. Everyone was fantastic company and I am so grateful for the support.

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

Our regular crew of Chinese lads, Alex Choy and his mates joined us yesterday for their fourth trip of the season.

The lads just love to fish the distant grounds in search of the Acadian redfish.
So far this year they have dropped lucky with the weather and the fish and yesterday was just the same for them. Flat calm and plenty of them.

I would guesstimate around thirty Acadian were boated, coming onboard in two’s at one point.
The light rods and light traces with smaller hooks, tipped off with small pieces of bait, are ideal for this style of fishing.

Alex was targeting them all day and on occasion pulled a few Codling up too and also landed a nice Ling of 8lb 8oz.
I honestly didn’t think he would get it to the surface on such light gear, but fair play to him, he played it well and was rewarded. One hell of a scrap on

Even though we were working back side of twenty miles, the tide was still running harshly and made things a bit tricky on the top of the tide but the boys kept working hard and were rewarded for their efforts.

Baited rigs worked the best today but a few fish also fell to the shads.

I’m away to Norway for a weeks fishing after tomorrow’s trip lads. Hopefully the weather stays like this for you all whilst Fergus and me are away and you have success wherever you’re fishing.

    Cheers for now,

    Rich
