Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl
With a bit of settled weather we headed out today, with a group of experienced anglers who regularly fish with me. We decided to run off to a couple of wrecks in the 20 mile stream.
View Boats Page
The water is certainly much clearer out there and I was hopeful we’d manage a fish or two. First stop, I set the drift up and we literally barely moved. The wind was holding us up on the drift, so we just tiptoed across the wreck. Each drift was well over five minutes.
We fished the last hour of the Ebb tide, taking 2 or 3 fish each drift consisting of mainly Codling. It wasn’t sensational fishing, but everyone got off the mark. Slack was pretty quiet, but once the Flood tide started, we had a flurry of strap Ling. We could probably have kept plugging away for the remainder of the day, but while we were out there I wanted to try a wreck which as far as I knew hadn’t been fished for a couple of months.
As we started the first drift, it was noticeable that the wind had lifted a touch and the lines were streaming a bit, which made it more challenging to fish. It took four drifts before I managed to nail down exactly where the fish were holding and we had to hit that spot every time, otherwise there were not many bites. With that sorted, we finished the day on this wreck, taking mainly Codling again, with an odd Ling, Pollock and Coalie. For the first time I can remember, we never took a single Pouting or Whiting all day long.
Muppet traces, bait with Squid and Hokkai’s on the second wreck baited with Squid were the best methods today. We had a boat sweepstake, but because of the swell, I couldn’t weigh the fish anything like accurately whilst at sea. So we took the best three fish back in. 3rd place went to Rich Anscombe with a 6lb 14oz Codling. 2nd went to Steve Martin with a 7lb Ling and Ryan Martin pipped his Dad with a 7lb 1oz Codling.
I had a really enjoyable day in great company. Thanks lads.UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl

Fishing Report by Rich Ward

Report on-board Shy-Torque III
A lovely morning welcoming us yesterday for another run out in this year’s Spring competition.
View Boats Page
A full boat of good mates and regular anglers sailing with us to have a go for a bigger fish or two hopefully.
The day started out well for us on the first wreck some 17 miles from the harbour.
A steady picking of Codling and small Ling for the lads giving them some nice sport for a few hours.
Nothing big though.
We moved on to a smaller piece of scrap a couple of miles East for just a handful of of fish. Not so good there really, so on we marched to another wreck known personally to me as Bobs wreck.
Named this way after my good friend Guy Wrightson’s Dad who used to fish with us years ago.
Guy sadly lost his Dad whilst out fishing with us. He got the call with the sad news.
His Dad gifted him with a beautiful Cod just over 17lb from the wreck that day.
He looked to the sky and winked
It didn’t produce much at all yesterday!!
We mooched back towards shore to finish the day off and managed another 10 or so fish.
Rob Moore from Selby taking our best fish on board (weight wise) A Ling of just over 7lbs which wasn’t a contender.
Young Fergus filleted away on our return journey to port and reckoned the average per angler was 7/8 fish so numbers wise, a steady 60+ fish boated. Plenty around the 4-5lb mark. Not too bad.
Thanks again to one and all for your support in what has been the worst start to any year I can remember in 40 years in the game.
The competition ends this Sunday so we will having another good go at it then.
Cheers for now
Rich.

Fishing Report by Andy Savage
on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl
Today we had good weather conditions (for a change), good sea conditions and a small neap tide; which were ideal for spending a day on the wrecks.
View Boats Page
We ran North a few miles to try a couple of inshore wrecks. It was the first time I’d tried the area this year, as they seem to hold very few fish in the winter, due to the coloured water. First stop on the flood tide and after three drifts with only one Haddock to show for our efforts, we moved on.
As I set the drift on the second wreck, I noticed there were quite a few feed-marks around it so hoped for a better result. Thankfully that’s exactly what we got. We had a good couple of hours fishing taking a good few fish each drift, consisting of mainly Codling and Haddock, an odd strap Ling, plus the obligatory Pouting!!
Either baited Hokkai’s or muppet bait traces both using Squid did the majority of the bites as usual. Dave Sharp was crowned “King Pouting” when he had a “3-Up” on his Hokkai’s!! He redeemed himself by taking three fish in one drift on a Shad. Good angling Dave.
Ian Kellock led the way today, clumping a Codling a drift early on, on bait, then switched to a White Sandeel Shad and had a Codling hooked fair and square. We took half a dozen on the Shads today, which shows that the water has definitely got some clarity at last. Rich Guyatt also had a great morning, taking a fish or sometimes two each drift and put together a nice box of fish using mainly baited Hokkai’s. We fished another two wrecks until the Ebb tide came through. They both produced well, but whilst we had the quantity, we didn’t get much in the way of quality. Our biggest fish of the day being around 4lb.
The fishing on the afternoon Ebb wasn’t brilliant, but at least the sun came out to compensate! A big thanks to everyone for being great company and bringing me back some sanity after such a poor winter. Look forward to seeing you again soonUPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl

To say that finding a bigger fish here at the moment is an understatement and yesterday was no exception.

We sailed on just our second day in this year’s Spring festival looking for a fish to compete with, to no avail.
Plenty of Codling were boated between the 6 lads on board which was good, but sadly, nothing over 4lbs!!
Craig Booth and his two mates from West Yorkshire and Warwick Mathews and his mates from Nottingham taking 40 odd fish between them making for a good days sport and plenty of fillets for the table which they were all very pleased with.
Our crewman, young Fergus providing his filleting service for them on our run back to port.
I’m sure there will be a better fish or two poke their heads out for us on next weeks smaller (neap) tides, providing the weather plays it’s part. Fingers crossed.
The current leading fish in the competition is just 6.5lbs so the chances of pipping it next week should be good.
It’s looking like Wednesday is going to be our next chance of getting away with fresh to strong winds forecast for tomorrow.
We have places left on just Thursday next week now so if you’re interested in having a go for the £1000.00 top prize in this extended competition, contact me on any of the below.
Cheers for now,
Rich

Yesterday was our first day back at sea since the 2nd April due to all the rubbish weather we are all suffering with at present.

It too was the first day out in our Spring angling competition here at Whitby.
We sailed with just 7 lads aboard so plenty of room for everyone.
I was going to try some wrecks and ground around the 9 mile area, but as we approached, we realised the water clarity was still suspect and so carried on a bit further.
We dropped on a piece of scrap 12 miles North of the harbour and the lads picked around 10 fish from it. No festival weighing fish so we moved out a bit further.
The next wreck we stopped on is one of my favourites as it has thrown a lot of competition winners out in the past.
A steadyish picking for a couple of hours on that one producing around 25 fish.
Again, nothing big, but a couple of doubles coming on board which is always encouraging and good to see.
Paul from Brid taking one of the doubles which, when he was winding up, was hoping it was just the one fish! Unlucky mate!
Every fish bar one boated on the day fell to the baited rigs of Squid and Mackerel.
I managed one Codling, fair and square on the shad which indicated the clarity down there wasn’t too bad.
It was the only one though!
John from Newcastle took our best fish on the boat, a Codling just shy of 6lbs which was pipped at the scales at the end of the day by a Ling of 6.5lbs.
All in all, a nice day at sea with some great company.m and nice calm conditions for a change.
Yet another Northerly hindering us now which we’re waiting to fade.
The association has extended the Spring competition for another week and now runs through until Sunday 5th May.
The £1000.00 first prize is there for anyone to have a go at, so come and join us next week sometime!

Yesterday’s weather and sea conditions were absolutely perfect for us on the water.
View Boats Page
Our mixed group, Bill, Paul, Si, Talon, Paul and Malc and his mate joined us for another run out to the “Hills” where we worked last Sunday.
Not a lot of drift yesterday to be fair with the tides on the neap side at 4.3m, which made coverage of the ground tricky.
With so little movement in the water, we basically had to find the feed marks and pick away at them.
Not the quantity of fish like Sunday, but a good 50+ fish boated with a couple of doubles thrown in too.
The usual juveniles going back safely to fight another day.
One or two slightly better fish yesterday (still not big) at around the 6lb mark.
All in all, a really great day on the water with the lads and I thank you all for your continued custom with us.
Some rubbish weather again now so looking like the boat with be tethered for some considerable time, which is so annoying when we know there’s a few fish out there for us.
Ah well, such is the nature of the game.
To book any trips, give me a call or drop me a text, or email me.
Individuals are always welcome.
Cheers
Rich.

We managed to get to sea both days over this last weekend.

Mixed fortunes for the guys on board.
On Saturday, Shamick, his wife Eveline and their two friends had chartered the boat for themselves and we struggled with the fishing all day to be fair.
Conditions weren’t ideal at the start of the day either with a fresh SSW blowing, lifting the lines at angles unsuitable for the job.
The fresher breezes always hindering the fishing on the drift.
At the end of the day we had boated just 7 Codling, a few Pouting and a couple of Whiting.
Nevertheless, even with the poor fishing, we maintained the good banter and the four of them really enjoyed the day with some good sunshine and mild temperatures for a change!
Yesterday’s team were welcomed with some good clear skies and very light winds.
Whilst we waited for the 7.0am bridge to open, we chatted about the previous days fishing and the options for the day.
I said that the offshore marks didn’t really fish too well either the last time out there which was over a week ago, but if they fancied it, we could go investigate those areas again.
They were all up for it so off we went.
We marched out to a strip of ground 20 miles East of the harbour which my Dad and me used to fish, know as the “Hills”
A good long strip which is around 1 mile long on the ebb tide.
On the first drift across it (not the full 1 mile) we had boated over a dozen fish (all small) but nevertheless, a dozen!
After the previous day this was great, with the rods twitching all the time!!
Up and down the drift produced fish every time, some more than others granted, and by the end of the day Gary Jones and me reckoned the count must be nudging 100 fish.
A good few “doubles” coming aboard too.
The usual undersized fish being safely returned.
We didn’t see a fish much over 4lb but the numbers made up for the lack in sizes.
Nice to hit a mark where you can sit and pick away all day without moving.
A distinct contrast on Saturdays efforts!
Like we always say, never 2 days alike in this game.
We are now looking forward to getting back to that area on our next trip out on Wednesday hopefully if the weather permits.
Cheers for now everyone and keep a tight line wherever you’re fishing.

Don’t be fooled by the pictures…..today was was a really tough fishing day, made into a thoroughly enjoyable day by the anglers aboard.

We had a small tide but the winds were a bit too fresh for running out to offshore wrecks. That gave us the option of fishing inside at anchor as the inshore wrecks and ground still haven’t sparked up yet. We headed South to make the most of the tide and after an hours run we put the anchor down. With the area receiving little pressure this winter, I hoped there would be a few willing resident Codling that would come and find us.
I was wrong, simple as that. We had dropped anchor in the fishy equivalent of Dogs Trust, with a constant stream of DogFish and Pouting snaffling the baits. Three moves later we conceded defeat and ran back a few miles towards Whitby; arriving about an hour before slack water. Before I’d even had chance to finish making the brews, I saw Chris Chatham bring up a Codling which was a relief. Thankfully an odd Codling started to make an appearance, but it certainly wasn’t prolific.
Once the bites dried up, we had a short move as it appeared there weren’t many fish running. I put us on a short anchor as we were about to lose the tide and start swinging about. Interestingly, as we lost the tide we had a bit of a flurry of Pollock. We don’t seem to get too many of them when Uptiding, but we had half a dozen of them today. With Charlie Hewitt taking the biggest at 6lb 12oz.
Most of the lads switched over to regular leads (as opposed to breakaway leads) while the boat was swinging and we kept picking up odd fish which certainly hasn’t been the case recently.
Once the Ebb Tide came through, things tailed off again and despite another three moves, we ended with only an odd fish here and there. I would have loved to be able to deliver a few more fish for the boys, but it just wasn’t to be.
From a personal perspective, it was great to have a group of “anglers” (not freezer fillers) aboard, most of whom I hadn’t seen this winter with the rubbish weather we’ve had. A good catch up with some great banter. Thanks very much to you allUPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl

Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl
We had the weather today to have a run out and try a few wrecks. I haven’t been offshore since last year, so didn’t really know what to expect; but I wasn’t hugely optimistic having spoken with Rich Ward from Shy-Torque, who had tried recently. Almost with a sense of impending doom I pointed us North and headed out to some wrecks in the 20 mile stream.

Just to be clear; I much prefer to fish the inshore wrecks which saves so much time steaming around, but unfortunately at this time of year we’ve found them to hold very little until the water starts to clear out. The offshore wrecks are usually a little more prolific, hence the reason for heading out that far.
I had a great crew aboard today, who love wrecking and knew what to do, so at least I knew if the fish were present and feeding they’d catch them. We had half a dozen drifts on the first wreck (which had a huge seal mooching around it) for a grand total of two Pouting, a Plaice and a bitten off Codling!! Oh S**t…..Time to move on.
We arrived at the next wreck with 90 minutes or so until slack water. I breathed a sigh of relief as three fish came up on the second drift (we missed the wreck first drift with the wind blowing us out to sea). We then proceeded to have a few fish each drift for the next 3 hours. Our best drift saw six Codling come up, nothing massive, but good to get bites. As usual, a few patterns emerged as the day progressed. When the tide was at full speed, smaller baits on Hokkai’s did the business, but as it eased, muppet traces baited with Squid or Mackerel seemed best.
A couple of things worthy of mention: Sea Urchin regular Allan Knaggs was top rod today, with nine fish to keep plus throwbacks. He fished really well, especially with the lines streaming a bit after dinner. Tony Firman caught plenty of fish (mainly Coalie’s) using the Slow Pitched Jig which was good to see.
Once the Ebb Tide came through it slowed the fishing right down, so we had half an hour on a wreck on the way back in for another half a dozen fish. It wasn’t a Red Letter Day, but equally, it wasn’t a disaster. Great to spend a day in the sunshine in excellent company. Thanks lads.UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl
