This years Summer angling festival at Whitby proved to be a bit of a nervous one for John Wilcock from Bradford. On the first day of the event John managed to set the precedent with a very fine ling of 26lb 8oz aboard the Shy-Torque III. The next 22 days were to prove very lengthy indeed!! However, his fish did manage to hold out to the end and John will now receive a massive £5000.00 in cash for his long wait !!! The WCSA would like to thank all the anglers who took part in this years event and also to all our sponsors who very generously donate to the association each year, without whom we wouldn't be able to host such a prestigious event. Pictured is John with his winning fish. Well done mate!!

With large tides again today we had a trot up the coast again to fish the grounds we fished yesterday seeing as it fished so well. We arrived on slack water with no drift at all so started on a small wreck laying fairly shallow, first drift was cracking, a few dropped fish, but the ones we landed were of good stamp, cod weighing in at 13 lb and ling into low double figures. we fished the wreck for a few more drifts until the tide got away managing a few more cod and ling.
we moved off onto the ground nearby and took a few codlings but an easterly breeze picked up pushing us along at over 2 knots which seemed to put the fish off a bit. moving into deeper water we found a good few fish more, including a nice haddock of around 3lb, best fish of the day was a cod and went 13 lb on the scales with many in the 6 - 8 lb class, a few probably around the 9 and 10 lb mark.
Trevor Burt took first place today on the daily board with his 13 lb cod, netting him £50, well done Trev. View Boats Page

We saw a big lift in the tides today, i had heard reports further up the coast of some large hauls the day previous. so with that in mind we headed an hour up the coast to work some rough ground. we were pushing tide all the way which was frustrating, my nerves were jangling with excitement at the prospect of some good fishing for the lads from Derby on their 1st boat fishing trip. the trip was well worth the effort the fishing was fantastic! the fishing slowed off a bit inshore so we pushed further offshore to scout round another patch of ground, this fished even better! each drift was producing three fish per angler, all on shads and light tackle! it was manic running round with the net for the lads! finally calling it a day the lads were more than happy with their with their catch, it was a perfect day at sea, it was flat, sun shining all day and loads of fish! pictured, the lads with some of their catch . . . .

What a glorious day to be at sea! with a lift in the tides today, we were going to be working the rough ground and dropping onto the wrecks around slack water when the drift slowed down.
I ventured out to some ground 10 miles away from whitby today as i left it the day preiously with plenty of feed marks showing on the sounder. on arrival we found the feed had dispersed with only small patches showing. we managed a a few cod and a solitary haddock before moving. i worked my way round to the back end of some ground around 8 miles from whitby, we hit jackpot here, we had loads of cod mostly in the 4-6lb bracket, a few a bit bigger, the biggest fell to Mick Patterson which was a beauty weighing in at 13 1/2 lb, taking 2nd in the daily winners spot in the festival bagging him £30! We were working a a productive patch of ground the day previous, each drift was throwing up a good number of fish, all in the 4-6lb bracket. so my intention was to get back out there and give it another go. unfortunately the wind had swung and increased in the night and lifted the sea putting a bit of motion in the water, which had coloured it slightly. we started out taking a couple of fish but not in the numbers we had seen the day previous. so i pushed a bit further a field looking for clearer water, with a couple of marks up my sleeve we worked on plucking a few fish here and there. the strength of the wind meant we were drifting at quite a rate, covering lots of ground. around lunch time the wind fell away and the sea fell flat calm. we carried on working ground and came across a a big ball of fish, there were a few boats working the area so that soon depleted, but we took a good few fish there. around slack water we moved to a patch that was chucking a few fish up each drift which continued, we managed cod and ling both in the 11lb bracket, but we lost a monster off that patch of ground! but hey ho thats fishing! we finished off at the end of the day with a reasonable catch, the lads leaving happy with their efforts, pictures is Patrick Crehan with his best cod, going 11lb on the scales.

This was our first day fishing the Summer festival, the lads were full of high expectations for the day. First thing in the morning we were greeted with a lumpy sea, but with a decreasing forecast we set off in search of the big one!.
Unfortunately due to the conditions a couple lads gave in to the dreaded sea flu, but carried on fishing regardless. By lunch time though the sea had fell right away and the sun had come out. we took a steady picking of cod and ling through the day the best one landed was by our crew man Joe who took 5 mins out to drop a line on a wreck, it was a lovely cod around 12 lb.
